The first letter that I've ever signed as a faculty member. If academia wants to continue to function, we can't selectively enforce laws and rules of conduct. Everyone deserves to be welcome and safe on our campus, and that requires mutual respect for one another.

@florianederer Having a brilliant person out pushing the virtues of capitalism as communism reigned in much of the world doesn't seem like a "fruitless debate." And if we'd had someone with Friedman's prominence speaking up in 2020, it wouldn't have been wasted effort either.

JD Vance's story hits home for a lot of folks in the Midwest. I was born in Akron. My hometown, just up interstate 77, had a Chrysler plant that permanently closed in the early 2000s after cutting jobs for decades. Unemployment and despair leaves a vacuum for a lot of bad things,

The accusation of JD Vance as a faux anti-elite populist either because he went to Yale or is now deeply entrenched in elite media and political circles rings so hollow to me. I suspect that his life trajectory annoys progressives for many reasons, but chief of which is that

Between 2016 and 2020, I watched with shock as scientists I once respected viciously attacked junior scientists whose only crime was to accept a low level position in the Trump era federal bureaucracy. Their vicious self righteousness and close mindedness stifled progress.

If you posted about this in 20/21, it got you ridiculed to no end. Many economists were complicit: either cowered away from confronting absurd policies, embraced the fanaticism, or kept politically inconvenient research from being published. Need more economics, less politics.
