First major paper accepted from the saur lab: We demonstrate atypical AVR effector function: inhibition of the barley MLA13 NLR by the AVRa13-V2 variant. Thx to the editor and reviewers for their suggestions.

Many recent advances and an EXCITING TIME in (plant) NLR IMMUNITY. You can read up on this in our very up-to-date REVIEW from
@mpipz_cologne
PSL,
@RWTH
Ralph Panstruga and I.
In our manuscript we show that a variant of a Bgh AVR effector can act as an inhibitor of MLA cell death and this is associated with 'enhanced' effector-receptor interaction.
Look at those guys! Today at group meeting I really was so proud of what we have already managed! 1y ago, I have started
@unicologne
and first was all lost. (1/4)
At
@mpipz_cologne
, we have extensively used barley protoplasts for testing AVR - NLR pairs. Here we show that the protocol can also be applied to wheat. Great to see that MLA also recognises AVRas in wheat & in turn, Sr50 detects the matching AVR in barley. Enjoy protoplasting!
Oh and thanks to the reviewer's suggestion, we also provide a video that shows epidermal peeling. Check out how I failed in the first try :-)

Thought I am a grown up at some point, but even after half my life spend in the lab...........there is just NOTHING like the feeling when your western blot works first try (after using a new protein / extraction protocol).
I am apparently now (after 6ish years) finally re-intregraded to Germany (after spending year in Australia) : An undergrad student replied to my email without salutations and I found this to be very rude!
Als voll-berufstätige Frau kann ich nur sagen:

Powdery mildew AvrA effectors are RNAse like proteins - still 😊. But now we know for sure. But contrary to some previous thoughts the hypothesis is that they may have different virulence functions despite structural conservation. Let’s see if we can confirm this hypothesis.

Battle field under the microscope: our favorite plant-fungus interaction works in a cell-autonomous manner. Highlighted in red: spores that weren’t allowed to enter, green: successful infection of barley epidermis cells.

In this review, we give a general overview of plant recognition and defence of fungal parasites tracing back to the early 20th century with a special focus on Triticeae and on the (molecular) progress that was made in the last 30 years.

So much happening in NLR research....~ 30 y after cloning the first ones I feel one gets close to understand how they function

Peter dodds: pulling out Sr27, AvrSr27 and Sr5! Virulent avrSr27 still recognised by Sr27 in transient ox Assays. Potentially due to low expression in the fungus! For for thought when using GWAS...

Great work resolving the 3D structure of AvrSr50! Seems to be a novel fold amongst fungal effectors and Alphafold doesn't get the topology quite right yet. AvrSr50 can escape recognition by Sr50 even by a substitution in a single surface exposed residue.
