Any list of my favorite cards has to start with this 1984 Donruss Rated Rookie of our very own Tommy Dunbar (1959-2011).
When I found out Coach Dunbar had played pro ball, I had to go on eBay and order Texas Rangers team sets to get his cards so I could ask him to sign one.
What the North Augusta girls' basketball program has accomplished over the last six years is nothing short of legendary in this state.
Four straight state titles, six straight region titles, 20 straight playoff wins, a 53-1 record in region play and 148-11 overall.
Traevon Dunbar is out here taking pictures and signing autographs after rushing for 322 yards and 4 touchdowns to move sixth-ranked Midland Valley to 10-0 with the Mustang's first win over North Augusta since 1998
Wagener-Salley's Brenden Johnson, a senior team manager and Special Olympics Area 15 Hooper with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, got the night started right with a 20-yard touchdown run before the opening kickoff.
South Aiken sends five more to the next level. Congratulations to DJ Parker (UNC Pembroke), Deshun Kitchings (Newberry), Marin Sanders (Presbyterian), Jack Howard (Brevard) and Chris Roberts (Mars Hill).
Final: North Augusta 70, South Pointe 57
The Lady Jackets are Class AAAA state champions for the fourth straight year.
They are the seventh girls' basketball program in state history to win four in a row.
Girls Final: North Augusta 47, South Florence 42.
The Jackets are headed back to the Class AAAA state championship game for the fifth time in six years.
Congratulations to Silver Bluff's Jordan Boyd (Georgia Tech), Christian Echols (Charleston Southern) and Jayden Fuller (Miami of Ohio), who were honored today at the school after signing to play college football
Congratulations to South Aiken's Caleb Eichelberger (Charleston Southern), Devionne Burnett (Morehouse) and Jesse Sanders (South Carolina) for signing tonight to play college football
Girls' final: North Augusta 58, Wade Hampton 50
The Jackets are the Class AAAA Upper State champions, and for the sixth time in seven years they will play for a state championship
The πAl Lown came down onto the field to congratulate De'Angelo Bryant after Silver Bluff's win. I jokingly asked Lown if it was up to his standards. His response: "That's better than I ever did it."
That is one hell of a seal of approval.
Hometown school USC Aiken truly felt like home for South Aiken's Melvin McKie, who signed earlier this month to play basketball with the Pacers

Just in: Aiken High School has named Dwayne Garrick its new head football coach. Garrick is coming over from a powerhouse Barnwell program and this past season surpassed 200 career wins.
A big congratulations to former South Aiken T-Bred and current Florida State Seminole Jake Carter, who qualified for next month's U.S. Amateur at Pebble Beach.
The
@GreenJackets
are excited. I don't blame them one bit. They're back in the playoffs, which begin Wednesday at SRP Park against the Lexington Legends. Tix:
Mustangs block it. Midland Valley 49, North Augusta 48. That's a final.
Mustangs win the Region 4-AAAA title and end a 24-game losing streak against the Jackets
Aiken High's 4x100 girls' relay team of Jordyn Mobley, Morgan Coverson-Springs, Malasia Jamison and Jameria Davis has won the Class AAAA state championship
My sources are telling me the pregame scuffle at the Belk Bowl arose when the two teams couldn't agree which one should've gone elsewhere so App State and
@EthanJoyceWSJ
could be there.
Silver Bluff has its next head football coach. Matt Hayes, a former Bulldog player and longtime assistant coach, is coming home. Hayes won a state championship in 2000 under Al Lown, then added another in 01 as an assistant.
Katelyn Cochran's cumulative playoff stats: 69 innings pitched, 20 hits, 3 runs (1 earned), 137 strikeouts.
She drove in more runs in the first game of the state championship series than she allowed across 10 playoff starts.
Player of the Year. State champion.
I'll get to some stats in a minute, but first something that won't show up in the box score:
Man, what fight Williston-Elko showed despite playing with 16 or 17 guys. The first time I saw the roster, I thought it was just a list of starters. Nope. That's it. Tough, tough kids.
Congratulations to South Aiken's Zaire Harrison (Georgia Military), Ja'kobe Bush (Newberry) and Desmond Lawrence (Butler CC) for signing this afternoon to play college football.
Football, fatherhood, the future β and yes, a throwback to the Midland Valley days from Kameron Brown, who's set to wrap up his college career as a grad transfer at Coastal Carolina. via

Peach Jam security folks always have their hands full as they keep track of so many teams, coaches, families, fans, college coaches, etc. They're always hard at work and do such a good job, but this one dad keeps sneaking onto the court
Barnwell didn't have to look far to find its next head football coach. Brian Smith is the next leader of the Warhorses after spending the last four seasons at Ridge Spring-Monetta
Congratulations to Aiken High's Talik Jones (Catawba) and David Neal (Erskine) for signing today to play college football. They are head coach Olajuwon Paige's first signees.
A thrilling win today at the Bert for the USC Aiken baseball team. Went back-and-forth with No. 5 Florida Southern and made the big plays when they had to in order to even the series.
Congratulations to our area's All-State boys' basketball selections:
Russell Branch, Barnwell
Elijah Hall, North Augusta
Austin Harrell, North Augusta
Chris Kitchings, Wagener-Salley
Chandler O'Bannon, Fox Creek
North Augusta hosts Aiken High tonight in the 102nd meeting between the two football programs. They met for the first time 100 years ago this month. This clip, from the Oct. 31, 1923 issue of the Aiken Journal and Review, recaps the first meeting (Oct. 26). Aiken won, 32-0.
