Many a dark Alaska night, listening to the wind howl.
Our dining room at the island homestead. Painting studio through the door.
A bit folksy, but every sheet of plywood, every stick, every (recycled) window came over in an 18' skiff.
The only power tool a chain saw.
Don't forget to buy salt.
(ask me how I know)
Emergency food supply is as simple as a bag of dried beans and a Dutch Oven. Until you run out of salt.
In quantity, people have even preserved raw fish layered in (lots of) salt.

"Ostrich Farm" by Mrs. Codger
Our cash crop. (paintings! not Ostriches!)
We were invited to stay on an Ostrich Farm. Mrs. Codger painted this oil painting as a gift for our hosts. It hangs in their living room.
URGENTLY. Pay attention. Put your memory caps on.
Before the Covid Pandemic was even "Over" they were telling us that the next one would be Bird Flu.
Remember? And now they are telling us there is a Human Bird Flu outbreak in Texas. HOW DID THEY KNOW? In time for the election?
Trying REALLY HARD to keep a positive attitude today.
This is the neighbor on a near-by island coming home with groceries.
A bit of boat envy here. He drives an "F-350" as boats go! Note the radar dome. Boy I wish we had that boat.
Great grandfather followed the Gold Rush to Nome, 1896. With my grandfather, and great aunt Carrie McLain.
Aunt Carrie was a pioneer school teacher. A museum in Nome is named after her. As a little girl, I remember her from family reunions. Photo from my cousin "Cussie", Nome.
As a videographer, the old codger is pretty shaky. But here is a little gem he caught of a cruise ship leaving Juneau Harbor. If you have a mind to, you can see the long version. Link is in the comments.
🙂
The orange stuff on the beach is a type of floating seaweed we call "pop weed" because it pops when you step on it (like bubble wrap)
This is gathered by the bag-full and composted into the garden to improve the soil.
Ravens are to be taken seriously.
Spooky.
They mimic our sounds. They recognize and remember individual humans. They call wolves to animal carcasses so the wolf can open it for them.

Our daughter has us on a new diet.
More energy. Losing body fat. Better constitution.
Reduced grains, more organic grass fed beef, raw cheese, organic milk, raw carrots. Avoid certain greens. We've ditched most of our old chemical vitamins.
Home Sweet peaceful Home on the island.
Note:
-Doggo in her corner by the drafty window... always an ear cocked, keeps us informed. Deer, the occasional bear. Humans!
-Chainsaw (banned from the kitchen table) being sharpened by the window.
"The scent of oil paints on a chill Alaska Breeze"
Mrs. Codger will be 80 years old this summer. Her passion, her life's work, is painting Alaska. She paints daily but outdoors is a bit more of a challenge these days.
Photo: "Nome is not the end of the earth, but you can see it from there."
Patriotism is still alive in the Western Alaska and the Arctic where the Caribou and Muskox roam.
Off Grid power (our generator shed)
Our remote Alaska power system
Installed over 30 years ago. 18 golfcart lead acid batteries w/ inverter. 4 solar panels, small 5K diesel generator runs once or twice a week for 12 hours, 2.5 gal. fuel.

The view out the windows of the homestead.
It is impossible to describe the feelings in our soul
or even begin to grasp the Creator.
(foreground, the ocean, above that, a glacier.)
Follower count went down a little.
Which makes us sad.
We are not that good at sugar coating truth.
And we admit to having too much fun sometimes.
Our bad.
We ran into Mrs. Eagle at the tree and had a short chat.
They have not abandoned the nest as feared, but only put off nesting because of the cold spring. Instead, they joined the eagle convention on the Chilkat River. Like many modern couples, opting to delay having a family.
Just for the record, here is Doggo.
Kept us informed during the long Alaska nights, our remote homestead. Saved me from a bear one dark night on this trail.
She is in doggie heaven now. We miss her sooo much.
It's 67 degrees and sunny.
We're going painting, some lonely spot along the Pacific Ocean, lugging easel and chairs in the wheel barrow.
As we've done at least a thousand times before.
(painting, Mrs. C.)
The 80 year old Mrs. C. is sweet and kind, quiet spoken and non-confrontational. My heart hurts for her. She just got "Dismissed" by her Woke "Primary Care Provider" in an extremely nasty manner meant to hurt her. For asking questions.
Who do these people think they are?
I have been thinking about Faith and mental toughness.
And it's opposite, fear.
The media keeps up a drumbeat of fear. If it isn't Covid, it's the bird flu, global warming, yadda, yadda, yadda.
I haven't even looked at the news yet.
Remember who you are.
@TuckerPoodleMA
Thanks, Cassie. Certainly what you describe is true. And I will remark on your I.Q., because this level of observation, interpretation, and deductive reasoning is not within reach for many of us. Thank you.
The homestead:
Heated by a single small wood stove. Designed so that (in case of injury or illness) sections of the house can be closed off and isolated, to heat only this inner core.

The Old Codger as a boy on a S. Dakota farm, c. 1958.
Dad had a sheep and cattle farm. Codger grew up working the 4 A.M. shift irrigating or (February) retrieving newborn lambs and taking them into the barn (Mama following!) to put them under a heat lamp so they didn't freeze.
Chilkat Mountain Range in the distance.
The body of water we cross to and from town for groceries and supplies.
Calm day.

Old trees tell tales, the younger whisper secrets. Now fully awake, I walk down in the dark to check the boat moorings. The storm had come around to the southwest, early and worse than predicted. Afterwards, the sound of the wind lulled me back to sleep.
Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau, Alaska.
Traditional Oil paints.
Mrs. C painted this outdoors at the edge of Mendenhall Lake during a snowstorm several years ago.
Wearing her snowmobile suit. 😃
We are so grateful for our twitter (dare I say, X) friends. The ones that pat us on the back and step in with encouragement
or even correction or opinion without trick or stratagem.
Things always change.
The nest in the eagle tree is empty this spring, lifeless.
We were so comforted seeing the pair of them, watching them raise their young.
Then, sometime last fall, there was only one.
Don't take it for granted.
This was a birthday party last evening near Juneau, Alaska.
In memory of our Grandson, Gabe (his birthday) who died of a drug overdose, 2019. This was his favorite place.
It was his responsibility to stay away from Drugs. It is Joe Biden's responsibility to close the border.
Silence at the island.
The sun has been up since before 4 a.m. I can feel the warmth on my face as I light the burner to make coffee. The roar of the blue gas flame seems loud, the creaking floor, a chattering squirrel. I will let Mrs. C sleep.
The old codger went to a country school.
He spent grades 4-8 in one room, one grade per row. Each year, older kids got to move closer to the windows. Reading, Writing, Arithmetic.
Sex education? The lovely Gracia Mae, one row over.

The problem is poop.
The Biden Administration has discovered that Alaskans eat more fish in a day than most Americans eat per month. So Alaska is in trouble with the EPA because Alaskans' poop exceeds federal waste water standards.
Not making this up!
At our age, you have to be careful.
This morning I came out of the gate too strong.
Starting over.
This is our granddaughter, and our beloved dog as a puppy.

"The older shall teach the younger." Whatever your area of knowledge, become a mentor, a friend.
Near Juneau, Southeast Alaska, Alexander Archipelago, Pacific Ocean. May 2024. Distant mountains, the mainland, possibly Canada.
End of the road.
A lot of Alaska towns are isolated. No road in or out.
Juneau is such a place. You either fly or take a lengthy ferry trip. Old Codger will never make it on tik tok, but he did a video of the end of the road.
Link is in the comments.
Growing up on the ranch in the Dakota's, I was the go-to kid for the 4 a.m. irrigation water change.
At 11 years old, the reward was a cup of coffee with Dad. Folger's Perk, Fresh-skimmed Cream, Sugar. I can still remember the taste, the caffeine kick, the cool Dakota morning.
It was so nice last evening, and I am reminded:
spring is coming. We expect the first robin soon.
Be not stirred or troubled. He has plans for us, for a future and a hope.
Our Southeast Alaska alarm clock this morning... the sound of ships' fog horns as they navigate fog past the island.
It's that time of late summer. Very low patchy clouds clinging to the mountains and water beneath a high overcast.
An urgency sets in, a change of mood.
The longest day of Summer is just a week away. This can have a strange effect on us. A sort of urgency sets in. Shorter days. Less daylight to work. First freeze not far away. The salmon runs will be gone.
Grow your own food. Get back to making your own music! Or get together with people who do. We can take our music back! It does not have to be the sanitized pitch corrected and streamed on the Internet stuff. It started on back porches, barn dances, and country churches.
Have a happy 4th of July.
Southeast Alaska, the weather turns. Nature takes a deep breath. The rainy season, then the dark days of winter.
We'll try to load a sunset video later. Maybe catch the parade tomorrow. America stands. We shall not fall.
No this is not a trick photo.
This is the full-size humpback whale sculpture in Alaska's capital city of Juneau. At a population of 30,000 Juneau is the third largest city in Alaska. Over 1.6 million tourists will visit Juneau this season.
It is a Southeast Alaska morning. A new day.
54 Degrees F. headed for a high of 61.
He has not given us a spirit of fear. Whatever is pure and just and of good report. Think on these things.
Our Alaska commercial fisherman in-laws have gotten pretty dang uppity since they moved off the boat and got flush toilets a few years ago. Our stove-top espresso maker makes "Farmer Coffee"😱, they said, and besides, real espresso needs foo foo cream in the shape of a heart. 🧐
Teaching your own children does not mean you have to give up your career or become a homemaker or be smart. But it might mean getting together with a few like minded parents, pooling resources, and even hiring a teacher. Like in the Laura Ingalls Wilder days.

Juneau, Alaska, prepares for a short but massive flood. The National Weather Service reports that Suicide Basin on the Mendenhall Glacier is full and over-topping. A Glacial Outburst is expected along the short Mendenall River that runs through a section of town. See link in
There's nothing like live music.
Half a century ago I was in the little town of John Day, Oregon. My friend said the local pub had live music.
There I was, knee to knee with Gorden Lightfoot who sounded in person EXACTLY like his recordings.

Ours is a monster. It just keeps making babies.
Actually, it is "yum" and we use it in moderation to keep us regular.

Why would we want to bring "town" to the wilderness?
I'll try sharing this chart one more time. I think my posts about this are being repressed. The globe started warming 14,000 years ago (see arrow). Man has been blamed for the last little dot at this scale. Why? (Chart interpreted. Credit: Wikipedia, Smithsonian, fair use)
As an alternative to government provided power, solar is one of the options. We have friends who make power with tiny Pelton wheel hydro power generators. Some have little wind generators, like on sailboats. Or on sailboats.
Marxists fear a free people. People with chickens.
Old Codger:
Yesterday was not a good day for me. I embarrassed myself in public again (I was justified, OK? It's a long story.) Today the sun came up anyway. The birds seem happy. And Mrs. Codger is not mad at me. She forgives me in advance. What a gal.
Dammit! It's pretty dang simple.
I want constitutional Life, Liberty, Pursuit of happiness.
Without worrying about lying cheating elections, foreign invaders, perverted social agendas in schools and government.
And a sentient leadership that agrees.
Is that too much to ask for?
We are old, and probably come across as judgmental. Sorry. When you grow up and have kids, it is time to put your big boy and big girl pants on. It is YOUR job to teach your children. Otherwise, they will be taught the values of the National Education Association (NEA). Truth.

Here is what we want our feed to reflect:
You can stand up and be counted and not fall. You can be strong inside your heart. You can build a better, more self-sufficient life for yourself. It starts today. It starts every day. It starts in your circumstance NOW.
Maybe this is interesting.
We have changed our diet (organic, non-GMO, grass fed). Maybe as a result, we can't explain it any other way, we have also become more physically aware of Electromatic Radiation making us feel bad, like sitting in front of this dang computer.
The best work boat for SE Alaska? Depends on purpose.
Our little 19' workskiff, is tough, seaworthy, and reasonably fast, @ 20mph flat calm sea.
Best boat for sport fishing? 22' Aluminum, plain, low profile, enclosed cabin, 50 mph in calm conditions. IMHO

Our solar on the island. Minimal, 1940's-50's lifestyle.
(Note the VHF radio antenna.)
Neighboring island has a solar array that can be seen from space. We understand the appeal.
Here's an in between idea. A small array, battery setup, to fall back on. Sustainable. Cheap. Learn.
