Car culture has ruined the humble bicycle bell. A simple ding of a bicycle bell used to mean 'Just to let you know I'm here' and now thanks to decades of motorists honking horns at people, a ding of the bell has come to mean 'Get out of my way!'.
So proud of our little mongoose. He pedalled two miles a couple of weekends ago! He’s already asking for a new bike for his third birthday. And so it begins... 😬
@thomasthetaxi
Yes please! And even better: If we build protected cycle lanes children can cycle to school independently (just like the "good old days")!!!
For decades so many people have been complaining about kids not playing out enough and being stuck inside playing video games. And when LTNs are implemented to give the streets back to children, those very same people oppose it.
Strange that when the victim is a cow, the news seems perfectly capable of placing responsibility on the driver of the car in the headline. It can be done! Now do the same for human victims of driver violence.
So many people blaming internet shopping for the closure of so many high street shops. Has nobody noticed most high streets are very unpleasant places to be? They are dominated by congested, smelly motor traffic and have been designed around them. People are an afterthought.
Amazing. One exploding battery leads to a e-scooters being banned from the tube network. Yet drivers injure and kill scores of people on
@TfL
's road network every single year without them ever considering banning cars from it.
Our neighbour just used his smelly old Renault Espace to pop to the high rd to get a newspaper. Was there and back in two minutes. He’s able-bodied (a builder by trade). This is why need LTNs. 😡
Nothing to see. Just another driver who’s mounted the pavement, destroyed at least to two cycle stands and crashed into a building on the corner of Monument Way & High Rd (A10). Why should the public tolerate this
@TfL
@MayorofLondon
? Cars are the worst thing to happen to cities.
£321m to widen just 5 miles of road! I wonder how many miles of good quality cycle network could’ve been built for the same amount of money? Road building projects like this when the same country is suffering from serious flooding is obscene and backwards.
Department for Transport: 56% of car journeys are under 5 miles! A distance which can easily be walked or cycled.
Also Department for Transport: We're spending £27bn on road building projects and £2bn on walking and cycling.
Does this make sense
@grantshapps
?
I'll never understand how it came to be that bollards like this exist to protect people from drivers who mount pavements, but are installed in a way which takes space away from the people they are meant to protect.
When did donning a helmet whilst cycling for transport become the norm? Nearly all archive photos pre-1980s thereabouts show people cycling in normal clothes. What happened? And why? I know it has something to do with roads increasingly becoming dominated by motor traffic.
After conducting a Twitter search for “war on the motorist” it’s clear this so called “war” is basically just people expecting drivers to drive according to the terms of their licences, such as: not speeding, not using mobile phones when driving and not parking wherever you like.
@transportgovuk
Every home in the UK already has charge points for e-bikes. It's just a pity there's no law to require that every home has secure cycle parking.
It was very surreal going through the Dartford Tunnel without any cars- this is a video from a fellow member of Islington Cycling Club …
I’ve been stuck in here in traffic jams when I was a kid. It proves even some hellscapes are okay without motor vehicles!
'I will have to pay £480 to park outside my home'... yeah, but that space on the road outside your house is on public land. Do you think that £480 per year is anywhere near the land value for the space you're renting? Think again.
The 2 metre restrictions are really making London’s pedestrian infrastructure look inadequate. Most pavements, towpaths & park footpaths are under 2 metres wide. Hopefully the masses are now realising how people are shortchanged when it come to “sharing” public spaces with cars.
@Mark_J_Harper
When cyclists routinely crash into schools, houses, bus stops, people and animals, then you may have a point. This driver who ploughed their car into a school, killing two girls still hasn’t been held to account. Has a cyclist ever done anything like this?
I wonder how many people who return from Center Parcs thinks: “Wouldn’t it be great if the place where we lived had car-free streets and everything we needed for everyday life was a cycle-able or walkable distance?”
Why, in 2021, does the BBC still have shows like Top Gear? I watched a few minutes of it last night and it's just deeply cringe-worthy and embarrassing seeing so-called grownups talk about cars like that. Like school children boasting about which is their favourite Power Ranger.
I have an appointment this afternoon 6 miles away in a part of London I don’t know. So have been undertaking 2 hours of map studies trying to work which route to cycle which is least likely to result in being killed. We shouldn’t have to do this in London in 2023.
What a ridiculous argument! Is there no other way of getting there? How far are these worshippers travelling to get to those churches on a Sunday? Religious leaders once again not supporting aims to reduce car use.
I was on my way to work this morning and saw a pair of cyclists riding two abreast in front on me!!! I passed them without a problem as I was also on a bike! Those who moan about being "stuck" behind other road users only have themselves to blame for their poor transport choices.
@grantshapps
Your pro-road-building tweet in January got 98 likes. You tweet today about cancelling a road-building scheme got 169 likes in less than an hour of being posted. It's high time you took the pulse of nation and listen to what the public actually wants. Hint: It ain't more roads!
It’s hard to convey the level of guilt I feel when waiting ages to cross a road with my 9 month old son in a buggy. He’s sat there filling his precious little lungs with filthy air made by gargantuan cars driven by motorists travelling on their own. How did we get here? 😡😢
Unqualified, uninsured lorry driver Rob Whiting was in September after admitting causing the death of Dr Felce while more than eight times over the drug-drive limit. So let’s give safety lessons to cyclists! 🤬
@jayforeman
If I don't keep them in the front of my pots and pans cupboard, how else will I know if a burglar is stealing my Le Creuset casserole, unless I hear one of these ramekins fall to the floor and smash?
#FirstWorldProblems
It’s madness that a so-called civilised nation still expects people walking to wait ages to cross a single road, in order not to interrupt the flow of vehicles which are capable of covering more distance in less time than those walking. How did this happen? ☹️
An insightful montage of people falling off their bicycles. Look closely. Not a single person landed on their head! Cycle helmet advocates often misunderstand this.
It's desperately sad to see the numbers of people on cycles in Tottenham dropping severely over the past couple of days as cars return to once again dominate our streets. The few newbies who are still trying to get around by cycle are now mostly on the pavements where I live. 😩
Hi
@RoyalMail
. Very disappointed to see one of your drivers this morning parked on mandatory cycle lane on CS1 West Bank. There were plenty of spaces on the other side of the road too! Please have a word!
@MPSStamfordHill
Good. Cars are a disgusting waste of space as it is - especially as on average they're parked for 96% or their existence. And it's even worse when they're parked illegally! Another chink in the armour on the war being waged upon everyone else by motorists.
Dreadful news. How many more people must die during (what should be) the simple act of going from A to B by bicycle? Why in 2023 do we not have protected cycle lanes on all major roads in London?
Great news! Our little boy who’ll be 3 in November is pedalling his bike already!! 😲 I want to get him another bike (for a number of reasons). Can anyone recommend a good pedal bike for toddlers? Ideally with a basket/carrier. Thanks. 😬
@ChelseaDan5
Good on her for not being a snowflake and getting on with it. Much rather this than forking out loads of money to sit in a cab going nowhere.
Hi
@MPSStamfordHill
@TfL
. Sorry to report that these two drivers were obstructing the CS1 mandatory cycle lane on West Bank this morning at 08:31. I haven’t seen this for a while and then two come along at once! Thanks.
This response from the BBC complaints department justifying their use of the word “accident” instead of “collision” is appalling and irresponsible.
@RoadPeace
@allpartycycling
A motorist who drove at 126mph before killing three people after consuming several pints of beer is sentenced to only 10 years in prison and given a pitiful five-year driving ban. Why are victims of road violence still being let down by
@MoJGovUK
?
Nearly squashed by a bellend driving a huge land drover in the city just now as he entered a painted cycle lane. I knocked on the side of the “car” to let him know I was there. Guess what his response was: “Sorry about that” or “Touch my car again and I’ll kill you”?
The fucking size of some “cars” nowadays!!! That’s my son in front of it. He wouldn’t stand a chance. And the driver wouldn’t stand a chance of seeing him in time either. So called cars like this have no place in our towns and cities and should be banned. They’re an abomination.
@TfL
Let me get this right. He is nearly hurt or killed by her driving and she merely just got a fright. And you want us to pretend that it's a level playing field on our roads? This ad is only helpful in so much as how to react after the danger but doesn't tackle the danger itself.
How on earth can a motorist who mounts a pavement and run over a person waiting for a bus and not be arrested? Am I missing something here? Has this country gone completely insane?
Always interesting to note how fast a big group of cyclist can move to make space for an emergency vehicle.
Ambulance at the north end of London Bridge yesterday.
Hi
@ContactHaringey
. Will you be reviewing your absurd car parking policy on streets like Devonshire Hill Lane? Why are you permitting drivers to completely obstruct pavements?
@mikehakata
. This is bonkers!
The ABD thinks speed limits are "imposed undemocratically by bureaucrats" and that drivers just simply shouldn't "hit anybody at all at any speed". Can someone please explain to me why the likes of
@BBCNews
keep inviting comment from them on transport issues? Dangerous dimwits.
Do any other regular bicycle riders have these conflicting thoughts? "This is amazing! Why aren't more people doing this?" ... "Jesus Christ! I can see why more people aren't doing this."
Fans on their way to see Beyoncé at Tottenham Stadium yesterday. What I don't get is the road was closed to cars, and yet it was still thriving!? Are we being lied to by the motoring lobby? Seems to be that the best things in life happen when we remove motor traffic dominance.
@HGinnett
Why can't the same be said for the "unused" car lanes and the "unused" pavement in the same photo? The real question is: is allowing people to drive big cars on their own for short journeys an efficient use of road space? Lanes which appear "unused" are actually efficient.
'Might makes right.' Cartoon by Ding (Jay Norwood Darling), 14th May, 1921. This cartoon appeared on the front page of the Des Moines Register, above the fold. Nothing much has changed in most cities in nearly 100 years of car dominated streets.
@jonburkeUK
A child cycling on the West Bank CS1 cycle lane this morning and another child walking on the pavement next to the railway line! This would’ve been impossible back when this side of the road was clogged with parked vans and cars. Well done! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Just now on our street. A face-off between two drivers which lasted about 10 mins. The drivers of both cars just sat there shouting at each other to get out of the way (to put it politely). Lots of honking horns! This can’t go on. We demand LTNs now
@mikehakata
@haringeycouncil
!
Hi
@marksandspencer
and
@hackneycouncil
. What's going on? This is still happening. M&S say they have permission to park in this manner, but yet every morning they get a ticket. It can't be both, can it? Are you able to shed any light ongoing situation on this
@hackney_cycling
?
Hi
@marksandspencer
, what’s going on at Boleyn Rd in
@hackneycouncil
? Every single morning there’s an M&S delivery lorry illegally parked in the same spot and every time it’s given a parking ticket. Have correct and safe delivery provisions not been made? It’s very dangerous.
The real question is why should it cost a whopping £900 to fix a dent as a result of something like a bicycle falling onto your car? If someone wants to store such costly and fragile belonging in public spaces, shouldn't it be done at the owner's risk?
To all those drivers who think that walkers should thank them for stopping at a zebra crossing: how about you thank them for letting you cross through their community in your huge metal box on wheels?
The parents of an eight-year-old girl who died after a Land Rover driver crashed into an end-of-term tea party at a Wimbledon prep school have called for answers after what would have been their daughter’s ninth birthday.
Two stats which leap out at me:
- A third of car trips are shorter than 2km.
- Around six in ten car driver trips are made alone, without any passengers.
Just what are we doing with our lives? And why isn't enough being done to change this behaviour?
It makes be laugh that so many people are opposing experimental traffic orders due to little or no public consultation. Were all of today's residents consulted on whether they'd like their streets dominated by drivers using it as a through-road? No. They weren't.
Good news! We’re getting a Bikehangar on our street! Still perplexed that
@haringeycouncil
needs to post a letter to all the residents appealing for comments on this. I don’t remember being asked if I want parked/idling cars outside my house.
'In a thumping victory, they also ordered the two organisations representing the black cab trade that brought the initial case to pay TfL’s legal costs in full, with an initial £50,000 due within a fortnight.'
Be under no illusion which vehicles do the most damage to our roads. Perhaps a road maintenance fund would be a good idea (amounts to be paid staggered by vehicle weight, obviously). This can’t go on.
Another awful crash, involving a driver taking the life of a person in their 60s waiting for a bus. Just look at the state of the scene! When will
@transportgovuk
wake up and legislate that all cars are installed with speed-limiting and geofencing tech?
