Paddington is a rare perfect movie. On the surface, a lovely film about a friendly (and hungry) bear But really it’s a story about family and opening up your home to those in need. A refugee coming to the UK to find safety and community. Now that’s the country I know and love ❤️

However you want to spin it, requiring staff to be in an office 3-4 days per week is just not flexible. Not only is it really sad to see employers take backwards steps on this, it’s doubly annoying to see such roles still promoted as flexible. Red flags for a dodgy culture.

Fox cubs update: we think there are three, likely born on Saturday or Sunday. Mum is doing well, all three seem to be taking milk, even out in the garden. Their den is under our shed, nice and safe. Helping mum with some extra food, cos this rabble are a handful 🦊 🦊 🦊

Seeing more and more employers enforcing 2-3 mandatory office days again, and it is such a step backwards. More flexible working opens up accessibility, it’s better for families and far less London/South East centric. Give staff the choice to work where and when they want.

My mental health has massively improved since not having to commute every day. So much so, that I know I’ll never work from an office ever again. Employers that aren’t embracing flexibility are hugely limiting their candidate pool.

Our relationship between work and grief is so messed up… With no real statutory bereavement leave, employers have no real obligation to give staff sufficient time off. So if your boss has little experience of death, you can be left entirely unsupported. It needs to change.

We are addicted to meetings… Since March 2020, the average number of meetings we attend has risen by 13.5%. And up to 70% of meetings are deemed ineffective, keeping people from doing actual work. Let’s start saying no to meetings that aren’t purposeful and well-organised.

One observation… The vast majority of anti-remote working comments I’ve received over the last week are from 40+ white men. It’s almost like it might be more about retaining power, control and protecting careers than it is actual effectiveness, flexibility and life balance 🤔

Like for many, my mental health the last few years has not been good at all… But something in me switched back this week in Greece, and that feeling of inner peace is so so powerful. Long may it last 💙

A key part of the office vs remote debate is how much time is wasted commuting. On average, you’d save 10 hours a week, or ~450 hours a year, by not commuting to an office. The debate isn’t remote vs office… It’s remote vs office + commuting. For many, that’s the dealbreaker.

The “everyone is a fundraiser” mentality diminishes what great fundraisers do. It’s a challenging profession that requires commitment, tenacity and many reps to get really good at. You don’t hear “everyone’s an electrician”. So stop it.

Paddington is a near perfect movie. On the surface, a lovely adventure about a friendly (and hungry!) bear. But really it’s a tale about a refugee coming to the UK to find safety, acceptance and family. That’s the country I love ❤️

So many people I work with are switching to a @4Day_Week or 9 day fortnight! 🙌🏻 A flexible, family-first approach is the future of work. Your value is not, should never be, defined by the number of days/hours you work. Employers, work has changed. Offer people what they want.

We don’t talk about the environmental cost of virtual meetings… Did you know that a one hour video call on Teams/Zoom pumps 1kg of CO2 into the atmosphere PER PERSON? So just the small act of switching your camera off when you don’t need to be on screen makes a difference.

I’m very emotional tonight… My entire working life has been under the shadow of austerity and terrible leaders making decisions purely for the benefit of their mates. Open the doors. My generation is ready and more than capable to lead us into a better future.

One immediate change that will make you and your teams happier, healthier and more productive… Shorten all hour long meetings to 45 minutes and all two hour meetings to 90 minutes. It’s an absolute game changer.
