We are really proud that our new adventure is one of three finalists in the “Best Sustainable Innovation” category.
Our motto of Buy Better, Buy Less, sums up what we do.
A vote on the link below would be very much appreciated 😊
I feel so bad for the 54,000 people who flew into Ireland in Christmas week.
They would only have come out of self isolation last week.
They will have missed Christmas and New Year’s Eve while staying, alone, in their bedrooms.
54,000 people.
I have never been prouder.
We are giving EVERYTHING to make sure that our customers are kept safe during this pandemic.
Today, we got the ultimate compliment, we were trolled for being too safe😉
( oh and kiddo, we are in this business for 30 years, we don’t do nervous 😉).
It gets a little tiring...
There’s
@GeorgeLeeRTE
blaming restaurants, cafés and pubs, on the spread of the virus on RTE news tonight.
George, we are all closed, except for some places doing takeout only.
Find someone new to beat, this target is beaten.
That’s it...
That’s the shot of Cork, I was looking to get all these years..
Good morning, from a small City on the second largest natural harbour in the world...

As we watch unfolding horrors in

it’s probably time to stop whinging about not being allowed to drink Gin and Tonics indoors without being vaccinated.

It’s official today
Caroline Street is now a pedestrianised dining street.
Every business on the street has a restaurant ✅
No traffic 11-5 ✅
Two wonderful murals ✅
One world class department store ✅
Wheelchair friendly ✅
Family owned businesses ✅
Insta™️ friendly ✅
A timely reminder that Superquinn used to have an automated machine in store that scanned and accepted returnable bottles, it then printed you a receipt to use against your shopping.
This was in 1984.
#Returnable

As of this week, we are stopping using butter portions.
Hundreds of sheets of unrecoverable aluminium foil, going to incineration.
Real Irish butter in a ramekin from tomorrow.

Okay, that’s it, we are out
All of us have friends or family in “at risk” groups, it’s time to protect ourselves
We will be back, but right now, it’s time to think a little bigger, a little better, a little braver
See you soon, much love

A year after Cork wept about the closing of Liam Ruiséal bookstore, today I watched our postman struggle with the weight of books being imported via
#Amazon
Walking past our last bookshops.
Remember, we shape our cities through our actions, not our words.
#shoplocal
Dear NPHET and Irish Government, please STOP your leaks, your kite flying, your “sources close to..”
Just stop
Enough
You are playing with the minds and livelihoods of 180,000 people with your ego trips
There are people here at breaking point
Enough
I watched the BBC news this morning.
It showed a live traffic feed from Kyiv.
There, at the bottom of the screen, I watched a couple walking past the stalled traffic, carrying only a cat carrier and a small suitcase.
It could have been 1939.
But it wasn’t.
Heartbreaking.
When we Irish, as immigrants escaping famine, war or a collapsed economy, arrived, destitute, in New York, we read the words on the Statue of Liberty.
“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free..”
Nobody mentioned vetting.
To those in Cork who are thinking,
“Sure we will go in and take a look..”
This protest does not represent those of us who have lost friends and closed businesses, it represents ugly political opportunism.
Nothing more, nothing less.
Imported, plastic wrapped and not recyclable.
This jam serving is about as lazy as it gets.
As the planet burns, the madness continues.
There is NO EXCUSE for single use jam packs, just buy a bucket of Irish jam at Musgraves and use a spoon.
Bangs head softly against wall.
Just went to book a Dublin restaurant for the nights of the
#Oasis
concerts.
Same price as the weeks before and after and it’s the same with hairdressers too.
Maybe it’s time to stop lumping struggling service industries into the same VAT category as profitable hotel groups?
2 lovely American guys in today.
Got talking with the older Cork lady beside them.
They explained that they were "together"
She said they were lovely and should get married.
They bought her lunch without telling her, then hugged her goodbye..
Idaho™
I got home, climbed out of my car and watched the sun setting..
And yes, I cried.
Was I watching a sunset, or watching the sun setting ?
So many wonderful customers and friends in with us today and so many unsaid words.
But it’s not the end of this story.

We have now dropped it back to BT’s.

Their accounts team are working to refund your credit card.
Much love.
Caroline Street x
Eleven thousand people flew into Dublin airport last week.
Eleven thousand people.
The majority said that they were “returning from a holiday.”
It might be an idea to shut down this madness before the Easter holidays.
Just saying.
Caroline street, is, I believe, the only street in Cork, where every business on the street, contains a restaurant.
We have been pedestrianised since 2003.
From this summer, we will be car free from 11am - 4am
We all look forward to welcoming you back !
#TakeToTheStreets
A timely reminder, that at Idaho, we have committed to NEVER using outdoor heaters.
Burning fossil fuels to warm a street, just so that we can all take our coats off, is wrong
Doing it in a city 2 metres above sea level is mad.
Thank you.

Every city in Ireland should be looking at what is happening in Dublin at the moment.
Before any more ten year transportation plans are started, we need to start incentivising City living.
Living over the shop tax breaks, derelict sites seizures, whatever it takes.
NOW !
Christmas at Idaho™
"Richard, could I discreetly pay for the couple in the corner ? They were always kind to my parents.."
Sorry, I reply, they have already paid and for your lunch too..
Lovely to see such generosity still alive and well...
Need a chuckle today ? 😊
We put out our tables for those looking for fresh air.
Today, we got a letter from
@corkcitycouncil
threatening legal action.
Apparently we are blocking the footpath.
SHOW ME THE PEOPLE WE ARE BLOCKING!
This is their priority, as Ireland hurts.
CORRECTION
Media reports claimed yesterday that Pret A Manger were “creating” 500 new jobs.
What they meant to say was
“A Luxembourg private equity group intends to cannibalise an existing Irish market and expatriate the profits”
This isn’t job creation, it’s job relocation.
Those who run city centre businesses know that muppets steal everything.
It’s how you respond, that is important 😉
So, when a muppet stole our “O” we asked

This week in Cork..
@gardainfo
dived in and saved a man from drowning in the river Lee.
Another body was taken from the river yesterday.
And people think that these are provided as a laugh for drunken muppets..
Stick to the traffic cones, you heartless, thoughtless idiot.
Did you know, that by the end of February in Cork, most Independent Cafés will use the same €1 deposit reusable cup ?
Buy your coffee from any of us and return the cup to any of us for your euro back.
It wasn’t that hard was it ?
#shoplocal
and remember
#ThereIsNoPlanetB
From today, when someone walks in and orders a takeout coffee, we are going to ask..
“Do you have your own cup?”
It’s just words, just a question, but we need to stop normalising waste and start normalising

Let the horror of
#AustraliaFires
be our tipping point.
Really delighted to hear that we can accommodate groups of up to 200 on the Terrace™️ at Idaho.
( I feel silly for up to now splitting groups above 6 into two groups)
We go LARGE from tomorrow!!
Thanks to the AG for the clarification, it’s hard to keep up 😉

GREAT NEWS FROM CORK!
High tide and the storm surge have passed, with no major flooding at all.
Yaaaay !
Cork reopens for business as normal, on Wednesday.
See you then !
So last night
@EamonRyan
went on Prime Time and explained how important it was for us all to minimise our electricity usage at peak times.
He was almost universally dismissed as a crank.
Today
@vonderleyen
has announced it as an EU policy.
We need to literally chill our jets
And YET another cycle path opens in Cork!
This one connects Glanmire to the Carrigtwohill greenway and will soon(ish) also connect all the way to the City.
When cycling is safe and segregated like this, so many more people will leave the car at home.
Nice one

Today’s good news story.
After months of repointing, re-roofing and re-building, this fine old warehouse, that was fit to fall, is fit to go.
It’s on Maylor street (99 metres from Idaho) I believe it is to become a bar, I may be wrong.
One less derelict site..
Nineteen years ago today, we placed our first and only advertisement
“Mairead and Richard Jacob are delighted to announce the opening of Idaho
Caroline on Maylor, Cork “
This is our first year, not celebrating with friends.
See you all again soon

This is a strange photo, but this is all of our food waste and compostable material from our kitchen and plates from tables on a BUSY day..
( it even includes our old flowers from the tables!)
This makes us all very proud, especially

And let me be clear, we have checked every SINGLE

We have recorded a contact number for EVERY table and will continue to do so.
I have reluctantly turned away those who forgot them.
Let’s not pin all this on restaurants again.

Anyone else remember the Chicago Pizza Pie Factory under the St. Stephen’s Green shopping centre?
Fabulous pizzas, the first large scale formula restaurant on Ireland and a wall of spirits that defied stock taking.
Happy days.

Funny how no one walks into a bank branch and says to the manager, “ You’re STILL here after all these years ?”
But they feel it’s okay to say it to our manager for the last decade.

The report advised us to eat more Soya and nuts and less meat and potatoes.
Not one journalist queried who backed this report.
It was reported as fact.

Having spent a day running a business with now only 6 inside tables and 8 SOCIALLY DISTANT outdoor tables...
One does feel slightly dispirited, driving past packed outdoor seating of cheek by jowl customers.
But we know that we are doing the right thing.
@theidahochef
We got our unannounced inspection from Failte Ireland today to check that we were checking vaccination certificates, contact tracing, enforcing mask wearing, sanitising, social distancing and allowing table service only.
We are.
And on we go…
As of today, we will no longer stock ANY

takeout cups.
ALL our takeouts will be served in re-useable cups with a €1 refundable deposit.
