Most nurses and midwives already obliged to work shifts covering 365 days a year – including Xmas and New Year. They're also restricted from taking leave at certain points in the year. The issue isn't annual leave, it's vacancies. You can't cover shifts with unfilled positions.

The reality is we can’t open additional beds if we don’t have the nurses and midwives to staff them. Nurses are overburdened, overworked and facing unacceptable levels of abuse in the workplace because of conditions that are absolutely out of their control.
