Scientist collaborators for this fall semester have been selected! Thank you everyone who applied. Once again we had to pass on many fascinating projects because there are only 14 students in the class. Yes, we’re doing it again in spring. ✨
Seeking scientist volunteers! Want to practice science communication and help author a ✨comic✨ about your research? I need collaborators for this spring's cohort of SciComm & Comics art students! Please share widely.

It’s now official—this fall I will be starting a tenure-track biology professor position
@MassArt
. I am over the moon, stunned, and very, very excited. 🌱✏️✨
Scientist collaborators have been selected for this spring semester's comics collabs! Thanks all who applied. The volume of apps made it loud & clear--scientists want to visually communicate their research!!
Open to all science and engineering fields. Grad students, postdocs, faculty, and staff are welcome. Learn more about the project and sign up here by Feb 1st:
Hey friends who get a paper accepted--congrats! That's awesome. If you want to try for the cover too, please reconsider using an AI-based image generator that is trained with art without artists' permissions. That's pretty much all of them at the moment.
Our latest issue is out
The cover depicts malignant glioma as a maleficent rider controlling neuronal activity. Check out
@itsrachelnaomi
& coll.'s paper on drivers of glioma-related epilepsy for more:

Aaaand that's a wrap on applications. Thank you everyone who expressed their interest. The students and I have been overwhelmed (in a good way!) by the enthusiasm of the scientific community for this collaborative project. I will be reaching out to some lucky folks soon. 😎

Main goals of this project are to get upper-level art & design students interacting with real scientists, real raw data references, and developing visual vocabulary for current science. They will get unique portfolio pieces. You will get a comic to share your research. 🤝
New paper! 🐁🕳️🧠🧬 We look at behavior-dependent gene exp in deer mouse species that burrow differently & their F1 hybrid. Alleles up-regulated by burrowing in F1s are also found in genomic regions associated with burrow diff. Congrats to all involved!

Had such a wonderful weekend tabling
@MassMICE
! Thank you to all the STEM students who told me they resonated with my work, the educators who are using it in the classroom, and everyone else who asked when more of The Little Scientist was coming. ❤️

Hello again scientist friends. Journals often make YOU pay for cover images and make you sign off that you have the copyright to the image. If there is ever legal trouble because you submitted something borderline...you think Elsevier will have your back? 🥴

That’s right! And we are right in the heart of Boston, near universities, hospitals, and companies doing cutting edge scientific research. We are open for future collaborations with our department and wonderful students. Think public art, comic/zines, outreach events, and more!

A thousand times yes!! If labs could pay artists’ commissions using outreach part of grants, you could then crowdfund the printing costs. And you could set the funding goal so that donation copies would also be sent to schools/informal education orgs.
Attendees will be guided through the zine-making process by both a guest scientist and guest artist. Seeking scientist and artist partners for this, so if you’re interested, please let me know! (2/2)

This is blowing my mind. Some skinks lost all limbs, but then their descendents GOT THEM BACK. What is going on at the neural and genetic level??
#breakinthelaw

🤯
Skinks are lizards, but some species have lost their limbs over eons of evolution, giving them a snakelike look. However, other skinks whose ancestors jettisoned limbs have, for reasons still unknown, brought them back.
