As someone who strongly supports the rights of women and firmly believes in the idea of having control over one's own body, I am greatly troubled and feel obligated to voice my opposition to the proposed revocation of the FGM law in The Gambia.
Women should have the right to make decisions about their bodies and should not be subjected to harmful practices in the name of tradition. The number against the repeal of the Bill is gradually increasing for us... Thank God... Let's do more
Politician masquerading as Islamic scholars going against the opinions of Anti-FGM advocates using abusive words to describe them are not those I look up to. Doing something meaningful is way more significant than attacking people who differ in your opinion...
#EndFGM
Close to fifty known numbers called me between on the 4th to date, some I picked, and some I reject. All they do is send threats and Insult to intimidate. This is not the way to go, I respect people against my opinion on National issues, but threats, I won't.
They argued that FGM is a cultural practice that has been carried out for centuries and should be continued. Hey, but cultural practices that violate human rights have no place in modern society. We cannot use culture as an excuse to justify inflicting pain and harm on women
I am not in a fight with anyone, but I am not also afraid of anyone... keep your threats coming.... He said to me and I quote ' Abdoulie Ceesay you will die' you will have accident and die....
This matter goes beyond mere political or individual opinions, as it is a blatant disregard for human rights and poses a danger to the physical and mental health of numerous women and girls.
Medical professionals have an ethical obligation. For an experienced gynaecologist to sit and suggest, medicalizing FGM seriously violates the ethical principles and compromises the integrity of the profession...
The Space was so interesting....

The attempt to repeal the FGM law is not only dangerous but also contradicts the country's global responsibilities. As a party to the United Nations' Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)
Parliament ABC committee today committed the Women ammendments Bill 2024 to the joint committees of Gender, Women and Children as well as Health , Humanrarin Relief and Refuges.
In the wise words of Nelson Mandela, I quote "Freedom cannot be achieved unless women have been emancipated from all forms of oppression." Let us not fail our women and girls, and let us continue to fight for their freedom and rights.
We have been praised for our efforts in promoting gender equality and human rights, with President Barrow recently signing the Africa Union's campaign to end FGM/C by 2030. Repealing this law means The Gambia's commitment to ending this harmful practice is called in to question
The Entebbe Declaration on the Post-Cotonou ACP-EU Treaty and the Declaration on Protecting Culture and Family Values. Well, culture and family values, we spoke about everything in that except the big elephant in the house. No recognition at all.
The Gambia has pledged to eradicate harmful customs like FGM. Revoking these laws would blatantly disregard this pledge and convey a message that the rights and welfare of women in The Gambia are not a priority.

in Islamic Law, preservation of the person, the life and bodily soundness of the person is a legal necessity. Anything that compromises this legal necessity by bringing harm to the person is unlawful.
The desire for power among both individuals in positions of authority and the general population has hindered efforts to eradicate FGM globally, particularly in the Gambia. This double standard is the main obstacle to achieving this goal.
No member of Parliament is elected to represent for someone to judge how good or bad Muslims they are. If going against the repeal will turn you into a kafir... So be it....

We had a very insightful AfriPAHR steering committee meeting with members from other African Countries.

If you can fight against police brutality and arbitrary arrest as a violation of fundamental human rights, then you should be able to fight against FGM as the same, but worse violation of rights. The inconsistency is too much among our race...
Once upon a time, in a cosy little town, there lived a spirited young girl named Fatou. She was a bright and curious girl, always seeking new adventures and exciting experiences. But there was one thing that seemed to captivate her attention more than anything else in the world.
Today, I had the honour of delivering the opening statement on behalf of the Hon. Speaker at the budget scrutiny training sponsored by the EU Gambia office for members of parliament. This training is a crucial opportunity for us to enhance our understanding of budgetary processes
