Cooley turns down Michigan.
Stays at Providence.
Willard turns down VaTech.
Stays at Seton Hall.
McDermott turns down Ohio St.
Stays at Creighton.
Jay Wright turns down everyone.
Stays at Villanova.
Not too shabby. Keep being you,
@BIGEASTMBB
Updated NET rankings shows all ten
@BIGEASTMBB
in the Top 75. Unreal.
12 Butler
13 Villanova
14 Creighton
17 Seton Hall
25 Marquette
47 Xavier
51 Georgetown
59 DePaul
64 Providence
73 St. John’s
Seton Hall beat this UConn team. And the Pirates won the NIT.
Somehow not an NCAA tournament team?
Big East is so damn good and should never been overlooked again.
The Catholic 7 / Big East reformed 10 years ago. There have been nine NCAA tournament champions in that span.
Big East has won 3 of them.
Best hoops conference. Bar none.
DePaul’s attendance for last night’s home opener was 931 according to ESPN. If that is correct, the Big East office needs to have a conversation about the long term benefit of having them in the league. Don’t tell me they bring the Chicago market, because they clearly do not.
The best “hoops first” conference in major college basketball just added Sean Miller and Shaheen Holloway to it’s coaching ranks. The Big East isn’t going away anytime soon. Love this league.
I think the two teams in the NCAA Tournament that have any chance to beat UConn are:
Creighton and Marquette
That’s the list. History has shown us that non-conference opponents stand no chance against Huskies.
I won’t disrespect Providence or Ed Cooley after such a great season, but what Creighton did to them tonight is pretty incredible. Greg McDermott has done an amazing job this year.
Creighton returns three All Big East freshman and Ryan Kalkbrenner. They will still be a young team, but feels like the Bluejays might be the league favorite next season.
Creighton wins at UConn. No words. Literally cannot believe this one.
UConn now 0-4 all time vs the Bluejays. Worst record for the Huskies against any school.
Of all the teams on planet earth, it’s kind of insane that a fan of DePaul brought the entire world of college hoops - and especially Big East hoops, - together today.
Marquette hammered
#1
Kansas, then lost to
#2
Purdue with the difference in final score being a 70 foot Boilermakers three point heave at the end of the first half.
That’s a hell of a performance.
Go Marquette.
Go Big East.
Calling my shot now.
#1
Marquette
#2
UConn
#3
Creighton
Here’s your national rankings when Big East play begins a month from now.
I’m going to speak it into existence.
Go Big East!
Creighton wins an epic 3 OT game at Seton Hall. Refs were brutal in this one and nearly changed the outcome multiple times with a pretty obvious home court whistle for the Pirates.
If Creighton wins the Big East, how can Ty-Shon Alexander not be
@BIGEASTMBB
Player of the Year? Unbelievable defensive performances against Myles Powell and Markus Howard in road victories, while leading Jays in scoring as well.
This quote is damn near perfect: “Everyone always wants to talk about what team being relevant makes college basketball better, and yeah the obvious big names are right. But it's the Big East that makes college basketball better.”
Not sure it’s been mentioned but it was genuinely cool to see how
@cucoachmac
and
@CoachCooleyPC
interacted at the end of the game last night. Super refreshing to see competitors show true respect to each other.
Creighton was likely going to be the Big East favorite and a preseason Top 10 team, but if Greg McDermott adds Baylor Scheierman…. holy smokes. Jays are poised for a big year.
Fact:
Marquette has wins over Wisconsin and North Carolina.
Fact: UNC beat Louisville 99-54 last weekend.
Fact:
Marquette is 6-10 in
@BIGEASTMBB
Now tell me that the depth of the Big East isn’t real. This is a much better league than acknowledged nationally.
Thrilled to hear about Creighton signing Greg McDermott to an extension. Can’t overstate the importance of
@BIGEASTMBB
keeping coaches like Mac and Ed Cooley in the league, while also adding Shaka Smart and Sean Miller the past two years. The Big East looks very good long term.
Is it sad, disappointing, or pathetic that UConn continues to advertise itself “for sale” to other conferences. Rejoining the Big East was the best thing that happened to the Huskies, yet school administration continues to insult their current partners by searching for a new home
Now that the regular season is over, let’s review proper HLOH / Big East NCAA etiquette:
If a Big East team is playing, you are obligated to support them. It’s us against the world. I don’t care if you have rivalries or jealousies, I will not accept anything less.
That is all.
EVERYBODY LOVES ED!
Whether you root for PC or not, Ed Cooley is a great representative of everything the Big East stands for. Personally, I am happy for him.
Gonzaga loses.
However, the premier Catholic basketball program in America, your Villanova Wildcats, defeat Michigan to advance to the Elite Eight.
Big East baby!!!
I’d like to think that Big East fans recognize the importance of the league performing well. A rising tide lifts all boats.
I will be cheering loudly for Villanova tonight and Providence tomorrow.
Lets do this! Go
@BIGEASTMBB
!
Food for thought:
Is tonight’s
@BIGEASTMBB
tournament title between Creighton and Villanova a matchup of the 2 best programs in the league since realignment?
Fact:
I was told that the Big Ten had the greatest season of any conference in the history of college hoops.
Fact:
I was led to believe that Gonzaga & Baylor are unbeatable.
Fact:
Point 1 has been disproven.
Fact:
Point 2 can be nullified by
@NovaMBB
&
@BluejayMBB
.
Let’s go!
Last thing on the end of the Creighton - San Diego St game:
If there was no whistle on the final shot, would the Aztecs bench or media have complained? I don’t think so because that is how the game was called throughout.
So, I hate a ref calling that foul and deciding the game.
Huge win for
@BluejayMBB
. Young guns in blue grew up tonight! Freshman Ryan Nembhard might have been the best player on the floor in his third college game.
#BIGEASThoops
power!!
#GavittGames
The Big East had a 1st Team All American, a 2nd Team All American, and a 3rd Team All American.
And the Big East Player of the Year was none of the aforementioned.
The fact that
#3
Purdue and
#12
Illinois are on Peacock tonight should make you appreciate how good Big East fans have it with our teams playing on
@FS1
Not to jump too far ahead, but if rosters stay generally intact, someone explain to me why Creighton, Marquette, and UConn aren’t all preseason Top 5 teams next year.
I’ll hang up and listen.
Jay Wright is more responsible for the success of the new Big East than any other person. It’s not even close.
I’m glad he is going out on his own terms and didn’t have a yearlong going away tour. He will be missed.
Unpopular opinion: I cannot watch NBA basketball. There are players (mostly Big East alums) that I root for and hope they do well, but the game itself is not enjoyable for me to be a regular spectator.
Dang, that’s hard to watch and not feel the emotion. Have to applaud Coach Mac when he said, “We’re gonna take the high road”. It would sure be easy not to after that finish.
Congrats to Creighton! The Jays are heading to the Sweet 16 for the second time in three seasons.
CU was the preseason Big East favorite and seem to be playing their best basketball at the right time.
We are watching the opening night of the First Four and everyone already acknowledges that this is the worst NCAA Selection Committee of all time.
Unfortunately, many of these members will be back next year and for years to come.
Is there some way to vote them off the island?
Ok, I understand the
@BIGEASTMBB
has rules on rescheduling of games, but the fact that Providence doesn’t play a single game all upcoming week and yet has three games that apparently won’t be rescheduled is not great.
Creighton’s PG opening just became the most desired landing spot for a high level transfer. Lots of minutes and a potential Top 10 team if other guys return. Wait and see.
Can confirm
@GoodmanHoops
report that Creighton guard Ryan Nembhard is expected to enter the transfer portal.
Nembhard informed the staff of his decision on Tuesday.
Pretty great night to be a Creighton fan:
@CreightonVB
defeats Marquette in 5 sets to win another Big East Championship.
@creightonmsoc
scores two second half goals to defeat Tulsa and advance to the Elite 8.
Final 2022 Big East Power Rankings:
1- Xavier
2- UConn
3- Marquette
4- Providence
5- Villanova
6- Creighton
7- Seton Hall
8- DePaul
9- St John’s
10- Butler
11- Georgetown
If Val Ackerman and the
@BIGEAST
do not take a blowtorch to the entire NCAA tournament selection committee and their process, she leave no choice than accept what Big East Twitter delivers as she abdicates.
It’s your move, Val.
Completely shocked at Marquette losing this one. I feel like MU wins this matchup 8 or 9 times out of 10, but they went cold collectively, including at the free throw line.
Feel bad for the MU team which has been such great Big East representatives the past two years.
PC could lose both games to Nova and still win the Big East because Nova has losses to Creighton and UConn…. teams that the Friars will only play once due to Covid issues. Really wish the league had made a greater effort to reschedule games. I’ll stop before PC fans yell at me.
Today’s winners in Big East play:
UConn
Providence
Marquette
Xavier
At this point, these are unquestionably the four best teams in the league - in no particular orders.
It has been decided:
If UConn beats Indiana today at The Garden on a neutral court, the Big East claims the final Gavitt Games.
So it is written, so it is done.
Fact: lots of college basketball players have entered the transfer portal.
Fact: lots of disappointed fans when that happens.
Most important fact: If you are really a fan and you tweet something negative to the player, you suck. Grow up. It is their life and their decision.
NET rankings through games on 2/15:
Five
@BIGEASTMBB
teams in the Top 21 and all ten in the Top 75:
Creighton 14
Seton Hall 15
Marquette 18
Butler 19
Villanova 21
Xavier 41
Georgetown 46
Providence 62
St. John’s 67
DePaul 71
Creighton men’s soccer was the
#6
seed in the
@BIGEAST
soccer tournament. They won that to advance into the NCAA tournament. Jays have now won 4 straight to advance to the College Cup. Team of destiny?
Looks to me like
@BIGEASTMBB
is the first conference to advance two teams to the Sweet Sixteen. Sweet.
We are proud of you - PC and Nova! Keep it going!
Big East brotherhood.
This league is nuts. By winning at Marquette, Creighton scores a Q1 road win. Jays next two games are at home vs PC and DePaul who they defeated on the road already. If Jays finish 9-9 in Big East, 18-13 overall with a Top 20 SOS and no bad losses, they dance right?
Impossible to understand the emotions in the Creighton locker room, but the fact that the Bluejays rallied from 22 points down at Villanova to make it a game in the final minutes showed great resiliency from those young men.
Ed Cooley and Greg McDermott might’ve inherited the mantle from Jay Wright, but with a stable of coaches like Shaka, Miller, Hurley, Holloway, Matta, the Big East is positioned well for the next decade.
I have little to add to what’s been said, but credit to Villanova and Jay Wright again. Class of the league and a great motivator for the rest of the Big East to keep improving. The future for the
@BIGEASTMBB
is bright.
