Today in Comics History: In “Peanuts,” Lucy uttered the famous phrase “Happiness is a warm puppy” on April 25, 1960. Demonstrating the complexity of his characters, Schulz had the famously crabby Lucy express the sentiment:

I was working ahead on Sluggo Saturday and found this panel from 1942. (This is unretouched—I didn’t remove her nose or add the Sluggo pupils.) Bushmiller treated Nancy as a pop art object before anyone else!

Today in Comics History: In “Peanuts,” Snoopy first sat on his Sopwith Camel on October 10, 1965. (I’d wager that, thanks to Peanuts, the Sopwith Camel is the only WWI airplane most people can name.) Here, the debut of the biplane, before the many battles with the Red Baron:

Today in Comics History: In “Peanuts,” Charlie Brown first tried to kick a football 70 years ago, on November 14, 1951. (Violet had the honor of yanking it away here, a role Lucy would assume afterwards.) The gag would go on to become pop-culture shorthand for futile optimism.

I’ve been thinking about Charles Schulz a lot today, on the 20th anniversary of his death (it just doesn’t seem possible). It would be unrealistic to discuss a favorite strip, as there are far too many contenders. But this one is still a gut punch, after all these years.
