Boku no Natsuyasumi 2 has 101 insect species to collect, all with diary entry images to translate. Rather than Photoshopping them manually, I wrote a program to auto-print the text with the curvatures and perspectives intact.

On Racing Lagoon I transcribed over 2000 Japanese characters by hand due to the proprietary encoding scheme seen below. On our next game I was able to incorporate a kanji recognition tool to cut the effort required by about 90%.

Boku 2 features one foreign character: Simon, a photographer from Australia. He speaks with a strong Anglo accent and to emphasize it, I've added a second font just for his dialogue. I chose a monospace, serif typeface reminiscent of default Asian Microsoft fonts like MS Mincho.

When NatsumeAtari moved on to the PS1, he thrived in making 3D models with detail far above what you would expect on the platform. His work was almost too detailed for the resolution of the PS1. A feat as technically impressive as it is artistic.
