Thread on how if Dems want to continue to rely on Black & brown women voters, they MUST address the Care Crisis.
We saw how the economy was the
#1
issue for the majority of WOC, and this is the bulk of what they meant.
#CareCantWait
👇🏽
When we are talking about the Care Crisis, we are talking about a crisis that disproportionately hurts Black & brown women—the backbone of the Dem party. They have to choose work or child care; child care or care for their parents/elders; pay bills or buy food.
This is not ok.
“One gunshot victim was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital”
To give folks perspective: that’s a 1.5 hour drive for a gun shot victim to get critical care.
The fact there’s nothing closer is a policy choice.
Here’s what’s happening in City of Atlanta:
1. Yesterday, the public learned that the police lied after they killed a Stop Cop City protester. Turns out, they didn’t have a gun and has 57 bullet wounds (family’s autopsy said their hands were in the air and has bullet holes)
GA organizers knocked nearly SIX MILLION DOORS. We missed holidays, worked in the rain, battled voter suppression obstacles. Georgia is resilient and we are here to stay.
Our voters deserve the world. Now onto pushing forth the Care Agenda so all workers can be seen and thrive
FIXED:
Millennials have been fleeing New York for creative hubs in the South, where [Black long-term residents were removed] and [replaced with] good cafes and yoga studios. [When these new (majority yt) residents didn’t help organize], then came the new abortion laws.
Millennials have been fleeing New York for creative hubs in the South, where housing is cheap and there are plenty of good cafes and yoga studios. Then came the new abortion laws.
2. The City of Atlanta then put together a “community task force” but then forced the “community” not to talk publicly about what happened. So today, the ACLU of GA announced they’re dropping out
If AOC’s IG live tonight proves anything it’s this: we must invest in trauma therapy and mental health support for those who work in politics—especially staffers of color. This past election cycle caused serious trauma that will never go away. Ever.
Georgia voters stood in line until after 10pm tonight to vote—all in areas with high populations of voters of color. Regardless of what happens on Tuesday, everyone must continue to invest in our state. Georgia voters deserve the world ♥️
#gapol
I want to thank
@staceyabrams
and
@Tyler_InTheKnow
for getting all my Black male cousins talking about voting in the family group chat tonight.
This is why we meet voters where they’re at.

Weather is GA is awful. 43 degrees & downpour rain. YET, over 2.5k canvassers are still out knocking hundreds of thousands of doors before tomorrow's election. These canvassers are heroes. & after tomorrow (no matter what), they deserve all the flowers & continued investment 💐
Yesterday dangerous militia members entered GA’s Capitol looking for Brad Raffensberger who had to be evacuated out of the building. There were 0 arrests. However, Atlanta Police Department arrested 22 people who were holding a Jacob Blake vigil nearby.
Black men who work to better the lives of Black men every single day held a press conference doubling down their support for Stacey Abrams after the

The first day of early vote in GA was great for Black voter turnout!
🔥Over 125k voters voted today. That’s up 53k compared to 2018—a 24% increase!
🔥35% of that voters are Black. Anything over 30% is safe for Dems. Anything over 32% is AMAZING
Let’s keep going 💪🏽

One reason why GA counties are prohibited from starting runoff early vote on Fri, Nov 25 is b/c the state is observing Robert E Lee Day
GA has a runoff b/c of a law passed during Jim Crow, & we cant start early vote on a critical day Fri because GA still honors the Confederacy

City of Atlanta Democrats are betraying basically every single organization that helped get them, Warnock, Ossoff, all the congressional Democrats, and Biden-Harris elected.
The orgs they’re betraying knocked 10s of millions of doors over 5 years and stopped a coup. Shame
I truly appreciate the GA Black men who actually do real work to help Black people’s lives—not only in Atlanta but across our state.
It’s clear that
@KillerMike
’s agenda is for himself and his pocket books.
Here’s how GA and national Black men leaders are responding:

Hearses from Black-owned funeral homes were lined up in front of GA’s Capitol around the same time Kemp announced he is lifting the state’s SIP order for most Georgians.

#TeamFairFight
is speaking to *2,000* volunteers across the nation to tell them about the worst voter suppression efforts we've seen since Reconstruction and what they can do to fight back!
Let's get it done! 💜💪🏽🔥
When Black people were demanding to count every vote in 2018 (because there was real and proven voter suppression), they were violently arrested. But these white supremacists—which they are—were welcomed with open arms today.
Brian Kemp is disgusting.
GA’s voting rights coalition wants to be clear about what we saw on the ground today:
1. Long lines are never ok. We’ve said this for years, & we’ll keep saying that until it’s adequately addressed
2. But today, voters were thankful for Sat. despite
@GaSecofState
’s opposition
🚨THREAD: GA Senate Republicans just passed a bill requiring voters to have a physical copy of their photo ID when requesting an absentee ballot. The bill is so discriminatory towards older Black voters that Sen. Lucas, an elder Black man, cried while speaking against this bill.
Y’all, the only undecided voters remaining in GA are the ones who are deciding on whether or not to vote at all.
Let’s stay focused on people who are rightfully turned off. Let’s make sure they know they matter and have a voice.
GA is only the beginning, and business leaders need to make a decision NOW: stand with Jim Crow 2.0 and the US Capitol insurrectionists or stand with democracy.
1. Speak out against the anti-voting bills in AZ, MI, TX, FL, etc.
2. Endorse and lobby for *both* S 1 and HR 4
All I know is they better not come into Georgia next month without talking about voting rights. There are millions of voters who are still dealing with the trauma of a stolen election. And I know because I’m one of them.
When people ask me what brought me to this work. And one main reason was Kwanza Hall completely destroying Atlanta’s historical Black neighborhood the Old Fourth Ward. Kwanza is literally the king of gentrification in Atlanta. Sold out our elders faster than anyone could imagine
Thank you
@CoryBooker
for highlighting that when voting rights is under attack, all issues are under attack. GA witnessed a stolen election, and now we are witnessing a man who appointed himself governor attempting to ban abortion.
Update on Georgia’s 1.1 million (and growing) vote by mail ballot requests:
32% of the requests come from Black voters.
61% pulled a Democratic ballot for the June 9 primary.
Black voters are voting by mail this fall and it’s because of investment in outreach and education
I can tell y’all right now: if Congress doesn’t act soon, they will have exhausted every single organization’s staff which will lead to burnout that will carry over into 2022.
Y’all keep playing around and no one will be ABLE to so-called “out-organize” voter suppression
A Georgia man was left dying in a ditch after a hit & run crash on 9/11/2019. Nobody called 911 – including a Georgia state representative. Today, months after our investigation exposed the incident, a Polk County Grand Jury indicted Ralph Dover, driver & state Rep. Trey Kelley
Brian Kemp’s home is Athens and there are reports that both of the hospitals there are full and diverting new patients. On the same night GA learns about this and after Trump came to ATL, Kemp suspends all local mask mandates.
Georgia deserves so much better.
"...any state, county, or municipal law, order, ordinance, rule, or regulation that requires persons to wear face coverings, masks, ...are suspended to the extent that they are more restrictive than this Executive Order."
Brian Kemp is just openly pro-virus now.

🧵Atlanta using signature match to determine whether or not the

gets put on the ballot is awful. Signature match was one of the KEY ways Kemp used voter suppression in the 2018 gov race. The Dem Party of GA sued on it and the state settled 👇🏽
GEORGIA: The Secretary of State is running ads on Black radio saying not to trust hotline numbers, but let me ensure you that calling 866-OUR-VOTE is safe and those answering your call actually cares about your right to vote.
@LawyersComm

Brian Kemp is so mad that
@staceyabrams
did the work to make our voices heard—despite voter suppression.
That is hard, traumatizing, and dangerous work (just look at right-wing violence).
I am so thankful for Stacey Yovonne Abrams.
We got this. Keep going ✨

According to The

Such an important piece. Georgians want Medicaid expansion—including over 50% Georgia Republicans.
Black women are dying. People are suffering. Brian Kemp must expand Medicaid now.
Because significant numbers of Black women live in states where politicians reject Medicaid expansion, expectant Black mamas in those states often fall into coverage gaps — or have to travel far for maternal health care.
#BMHW20
#BlackMamasMatter
During the 2022 elections, Black & brown women made it clear that the economy was one of the top issues impacting their lives--and we know that includes affordable & available child care. This is a great move by the

#CareCantWait
One of my biggest takeaways from this year is our media does not know how to cover Black women. In politics, culture, tech, etc, it’s failure after failure. I’m thankful for the few journalists who are so diligent, but we have such a long way to go.
Organizing did that. Investing in Black, Latinx, and AAPI voters who had been left behind for decades did that. So many organizers in Georgia across the state did that.
I’m so proud and so thankful 💜
🚨Pro-tip: if you are concerned about election administration in GA, follow the lead of GA-based orgs before sharing disinformation.
Many allies think they are being helpful, but they are in fact scaring Black voters and causing massive confusion. Follow these groups 👇🏽
Let’s be clear: the GA US Senate runoff matters. Our voters—especially Gen Z & millennial voters—showed up & proved the nation wrong b/c they want work to get done.

BREAKING: Protesters have shut down a main road to the Atlanta airport to demand an end of all US monetary and military support to Israel, an end to Israeli occupation, and an end to Cop City and the Georgia International Law Enforcement exchange.
5. And last but not least. What we are seeing in GA is exactly why we should have passed the Freedom to Vote Act. In no way did we defeat voter suppression. And voter suppression is in fact election sabotage and we need Democrats to do everything in our power to protect our right
#HB289

Wanna know what the Cobb County Braves’ home did during the US Senate runoffs? They shut down HALF of the early locations—most of which were in Black neighborhoods. There were 2-4 hour lines every day. Y’all don’t care about Black lives.
cc:
@NAACP_LDF
Let me get this straight (and it’s a long list):
1. The party allowed Brian Kemp to target Black and Brown voters to prevent a Black woman—who is known for working across the aisle—from becoming governor
For those watching 60 Minutes, remember that Brad Raffensberger was one of the first Secretaries of States to launch a “voter fraud” task force, which was a national pilot for Trump’s entire disinformation campaign.

He is a disgrace, has been for years. And I’m so glad people can finally see him for who he truly is.
We must, and I mean must, follow the Georgia NAACP’s lead. They are talking to the community. They are talking to the family. For anyone, responding to the news today you should amplify this community’s demands.
Be an ally in this moment. We need to SAVE Black lives.
As a reminder, what we need—what Black people need—in this moment, is police accountability and criminal justice reforms to save lives. Any demands around Mr. Arbery’s murder must include these demands.
Every statewide election in GA for the past 4 years has always had Dems slightly down or tied in polls, & in 2019, 2020, AND in 2021 Dems have been making historical wins. That trajectory is not broken.
GA is winnable, and we thrive in tight races. And we need your investment
We also have national Black men like
@rolandsmartin

@staceyabrams
has gone to EVERY COUNTY in Georgia. Why should she follow him around? WHAT DID HE DO? 1/5
To be clear: they are only doing this because the Jim Crow runoff law that was created in 1964 is no longer serving right-wing/GOP candidates.
While GA's runoff law needs to end, we must not forget that Brad is ONLY doing this because it no longer serves purpose for his party

It's not that Black women are "willing" to wait longer in line to vote. Black women are FORCED to wait longer than anyone else. I hope those who read this don't conclude that voter suppression is ok because of Black women's determination. We deserve better

It breaks my heart knowing that I don’t think I can last much longer in atlanta simply because of poor city planning. This place is just a massive headache and the dependency on cars is so antiquated. We deserve so much better
Sen. Cowsert is a racist and
@GeoffDuncanGA
allows it every single time. What a disgrace. We will make sure you all are covered correctly in GA's history books so your kids and grandkids and great grandkids will forever know your racism.
As
@tbonier
said, more to come. But in the meantime, please acknowledge how AAPI and Latinx voters did the damn thing here in GA. There’s so much room to grow.
Let’s invest in communities that get ignored; not celebrate flawed data that feeds into racist & losing strategies
2) There were also huge surges of AAPI voters in GA, among other groups. In the end, it is likely a record number of black voters cast a ballot in Georgia, but the state is quickly diversifying, and that will be reflected in vote shares, naturally.
Five years ago today, GA’s business community was able to force GA’s Governor to veto a bill that would have discriminated against our LGBTQ community.
Did they use their same power for voter suppression? Nope.
NONE of this would be possible without

To be clear: if this bill passes, it will require voters to have access printer/scanner so they can scan a copy of their photo ID, print it out, and then attach it to their absentee ballot request form. It is a poll tax.
