My home church First Presbyterian of Charleston awarded $115,000 in grants to 19 local nonprofit organizations tonight. These groups are dedicated to making a difference in the Kanawha Valley & beyond.
To celebrate them, our church invited special guest speakers including…
I’m gay. I’ve wanted to tell you this for many years, but I couldn’t be public like I wanted because there were still a few people in my family who didn’t know yet—now they do. So now I’m telling you, too.
ANNOUNCEMENT: I’ll be the lead sponsor of the Fairness Act in West Virginia. As a conservative Republican & a Christian, I can tell you that it’s past time to add our LGBT+ friends & family to the Human Rights Act. It’s time for the Mountain State to enter the 21st century by...
I had the chance to speak at the Log Cabin Republican Nation Conference
@GetOutspokenUSA
this weekend about the good work we’re doing in West Virginia. I also got to meet a personal hero of mine,
@RichardGrenell
, who was a member of Trump’s Cabinet!
It’s ok to be gay and Christian. It’s ok to be gay and a conservative Republican official in West Virginia.
My family accepts me. My friends accept me. Now I’m asking you to accept me as well.
My point is that cancel culture has simply gone too far & is being used by both the far left & the far right for political gain to distract you from the real issues.
And you are falling for it.
A bill was recently introduced to give a ticket to any West Virginian who drives too slow in the passing lane on the highway. I plan to support this bill if it comes to a vote.
What are your thoughts on this bill?
I’ve had a lot of friends ask me what I think about this whole Coach Bob Huggins situation going on at WVU, so I’d just like to make an ironic point about how low we have become as a society. Popular or not, here’s what I think as an openly gay West Virginian:
Please keep my colleague, Del. Danielle Walker, in your prayers. Her son tragically lost his battle with leukemia at age 23. No matter our politics, we can come together to honor a life cut short.
If you can, consider donating blood in remembrance of Demetry.
A few weeks ago, I came out as gay publicly for the first time in my 24 years on this earth. Never in my mind would I have expected it to get so much attention not only throughout West Virginia but also making national news. It was a decision that had been tearing at me…
West Virginia still has $600 million remaining from the CARES Act—passed more than a year ago. Today, I requested
@WVGovernor
Justice use some of what is left to give a $1,000 stimulus payment to the guardians of our 7,000 foster children and $1,000 to every college student.
...preventing discrimination in housing, employment, & public accommodations. West Virginia is changing; the Republican Party is changing. It’s time for our laws to reflect that change as well.
Domestic terrorism is not acceptable. Storming the US Capitol is not acceptable. Violence against law enforcement & members of Congress is not acceptable. If West Virginia Delegate Derrick Evans does not resign for his illegal and treasonous actions...
In some West Virginia counties, an African American student is 7x more likely to be suspended for the same infraction as a white student.
In honor of
#BlackHistoryMonth
I’ll be introducing a bill to reform our school suspension system to prevent the school-to-prison pipeline.
Far too many West Virginia students don’t know how to balance a checkbook, create a budget, or pay their taxes. One of the things I championed in the Legislature was requiring personal finance for all high school students.
Should this be taught in schools?
This morning, I will be requesting that
@WVGovernor
Jim Justice fly all flags in West Virginia at half-staff in honor of Jason Cuffee who tragically died last night while on duty for the
@charlestoncity
Fire Department. Jason & I went to Poca High School together where he was an
...I and many other Republican lawmakers will vote to have him removed from the West Virginia House of Delegates.
I swore to uphold the Constitution and it is quite evident that this elected official does not care about the oath he supposedly took.
“The sun doesn't always shine in West Virginia, but the people do.” - John F. Kennedy
On West Virginia’s 160th birthday, let us continue to celebrate these beautiful hills!
I am coming out in strong opposition to
@WVGovernor
Jim Justice’s massive tax increase proposal. He wants to raise your taxes to 7.9% which would be the highest sales tax in America. I will be an opponent of his bad idea.
BIG NEWS: I’ve been invited to Mar-a-Lago this weekend to join the Trump Family at a VIP event honoring the former First Lady. I’m beyond blessed to serve West Virginia!
Republican, Democrat, or Independent, all elected officials must be held accountable. I will fight to uphold the values I believe in even if it means opposing a member of my own party.
I’d like to remind everyone that I defeated
@DelegateIhle
in the 2016 election by 25 votes.
One of the proudest things I ever accomplished as a teenager.
A Professor at Marshall University said she hoped all Trump supporters die of COVID before the election. As the Vice-Chairman of the Education Committee, I am requesting that she be fired immediately. This kind of behavior should not be tolerated at any school in West Virginia,
I’ve been involved in West Virginia politics one way or another the last 14 years, and people have been telling me the same thing the whole time: Go to law school. Well folks, I’ve finally decided to take the plunge…
I’ll be taking the LSAT next week…
Wish me luck!
You want to know why electricity costs are so high in West Virginia? Because almost all of it (90% or more) comes from coal-fired power plants. When you lock yourself into one source of energy, you become a victim of the fluctuations in the market of that one source…
My sister is a survivor of a child marriage. In West Virginia, there is no minimum age to get married, and in my sister’s case, she was an underage girl who married an adult man. Most situations like this end in dropping out of school, abuse, & often addiction…
Do I agree with what Huggins said? No, it was offensive, but he apologized. Should he have said it? Obviously not, but it doesn’t mean he should necessarily lose his job over it.
A poll was released today showing that 63% of Americans my age do not know that 6 million Jews were murdered during the Holocaust. I will once again be introducing a bill to require this to be taught to ALL West Virginia students.
Surprise! Ethan & I got engaged back in October.
Hard to believe we’ve been dating for 2 whole years now. I’m looking forward to spending the rest of my life with my best friend.
Happy Fathers Day to the most loving, accepting, hardest working, and honest man I’ve ever met: Kurt Higginbotham. I wouldn’t be where I am today without you.
I’m 25 years old and half the people I grew up with have simply left West Virginia.
I’m a Republican running for State Senate to keep our young people here.
If we want to fix it, young people need to run for office. After all, my generation has skin in the game.
…A decade ago, I never thought the fearful 14-year-old freshman I once was would ever be able to say this out loud without losing those I loved, my faith, and my career—but boy was I wrong.
Don’t ever be afraid to be who God created you to be…
@WVGovernor
Jim Justice, you demanded the West Virginia House of Delegates to vote on your massive tax increase proposal. So we did.
And it failed unanimously 100 to 0 and ended with a standing ovation.
Coming in 2nd place, yesterday’s election certainly did not go the way I’d hoped, but I feel strongly that the West Virginia GOP is stronger than ever before. I‘d like to thank my opponent Mark Hunt for running a clean campaign and congratulate him for his victory.
The hateful comments made by my fellow Delegate Eric Porterfield about minorities in West Virginia are unacceptable. I denounce him. The Republican Party denounces him.
We can & must do better. ALL people are welcome in the Mountain State!
Thank you West Virginia for re-electing me today! This was a tough race, it was very negative, & it was very close. You did this! Thank you for having the faith in me to keep fighting—I won’t let you down!
BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: I’ve signed a contract with Mountaineer Media
@MtnrMedia
to co-host my first podcast “Two Sides of the Same Mountain” with my friend
@kaylayoungforwv
. There’s never been a show quite like this…
Learn more:
The West Virginia Public Service Commission has opened an investigation into Suddenlink’s customer service complaints—we have received 1,900 of them so far. We all know slow or unreliable internet is a huge problem in our state, so I hope that improvements can be made from this.
Marshall University
@marshallu
now has an aviation program! They’ll be training 200 future pilots & technicians right here in the Kanawha Valley. Honored to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony!
…and the vast majority of fellow lawmakers & government officials in both the Republican & Democratic Parties.
As I write this literally with tears in my eyes, I simply wanted to show you my appreciation for accepting me for who I am…
In West Virginia, it is legal for a 50 year old man to have a relationship with a 12 year old girl—if they are married. While many of our surrounding states are banning the horrific practice of child marriages, West Virginia’s Legislature refuses to even bring up the subject...
As a Christian, conservative Republican, & former member of the West Virginia Legislature, here is my statement regarding the Religious Freedom Restoration Act:
“Oh the hills, beautiful hills, how I love those West Virginia hills! If o’er sea or land I roam, still I’ll think of happy home, and my friends among those West Virginia hills!”
Happy 157th birthday, West Virginia!
#WestVirginiaDay
Thankfully, she got out of that and is now an advocate for making 18 the threshold age for getting married. I was proud to host her at the Capitol as we met with dozens of lawmakers about passing this critical bill.
West Virginia deserves a leader who will fight for what’s right—even if it’s not politically correct. I’m proud to announce I will be running for the House of Delegates in 2020 so the people of Putnam, Mason, & Jackson Counties will have a strong voice in government.
Do I think Bud Light’s marketing strategy was a smart move? No, their sales are down from last year because of it. Should you “cancel” an entire company which employs tens of thousands of hardworking people because of something one of their PR executives did? No, obviously not.
Nitro Construction has put hundreds of people to work in West Virginia, and now they’re expanding into solar energy. “Revolt Energy” installs solar panels on homes & businesses which drastically lowers utility bills for their customers. It was great to attend their open house!
@justinwvum
I agree 100%. I hope he can learn from this experience and become a better person. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt.
This is a teachable moment for everyone.
There are 1,000 pages of law controlling how West Virginia teachers are allowed to teach in the classroom! I’ve been appointed the Chairman of a new task force to eliminate some of these unnecessary and overburdensome regulations.
Let teachers teach! And let students learn!
I will be the lead sponsor of a bill to reform West Virginia’s Medical Marijuana program. My bill includes:
- Allowing medical research & development of cannabis by our universities & private companies
- Legalizing sales of edibles at dispensaries in childproof containers
Young West Virginians like me are running for office. It’s time we focus on issues that’ll keep people here: Education, taxes, broadband, regulations, infrastructure, & healthcare—not the divisive social issues or culture wars.
Thanks
@wchs8fox11
for the interview.
Some in the LGBT community who are now trying to attack or “cancel” Coach Huggins were just defending Bud Light a few weeks ago from conservatives who wanted to boycott the company.
My guest at the Capitol this week was Max Knapp who started his own investment company here in West Virginia. We met with lawmakers about requiring personal finance for all high school students. Do you support this idea?
…since high school, and I received excellent advice from the many people I’ve told over the years.
I wanted to tell you that I’ve been overwhelmingly accepted by my friends, family, everyone at church, literally thousands of supportive voters on social media…
13 years ago this week, I made the best decision of my life & I became a Christian. From my family to yours, I hope you have a Happy Easter! He is risen!
I am officially endorsing Woody Thrasher to be West Virginia’s next Republican Governor because he can actually speak in coherent sentences.
@ThrasherforWV
I will be running for the West Virginia State Senate in 2022 as a conservative Republican to represent the Kanawha Valley!
After much thought, prayers, and with my family on board, I have made the decision to take on a bigger challenge of serving our state in this new way.
While on vacation, I’ve been re-reading one of my favorite books: The Divine Comedy—Inferno by Dante. If you’re not familiar with the book, it’s a true story of a young man’s journey through West Virginia politics.
I highly recommend it.
Around 5:30 this morning, I went on a long walk around Stonewall Resort and was able to watch a foggy sunrise. West Virginia truly is the most beautiful state!
@WVtourism
HIGGINBOTHAM CONCEDES ELECTION
I’d like to thank the 50,000+ West Virginia Republicans who trusted me with their vote to be the Commissioner of Agriculture. Unfortunately, we came up short. I’ve only been running for this office for 3 months while my opponent has been running…
I was sworn in for a 3rd term to the West Virginia House of Delegates this week. The Constitution I swore to support years ago is the same one I stand for today. My family all attended the ceremony, but I think I’m the only one who takes this government thing seriously.
Only 22% of eligible West Virginians are registered organ donors—one of the lowest in the country.
This year, I’m leading an effort to reform some of our organ donation laws to make it easier to sign up & to educate the public on how crucial this is for our healthcare system.
Everybody is doing their part in the fight against COVID-19, but I wanted to give a special shoutout to my cousin, Julie Barie Turley, for interpreting for the
@WVGovernor
. Let’s thank everyone who is still out doing necessary work like this.
I’m so incredibly proud of my dad, Kurt Higginbotham, for buying & renovating the old Poca Plaza in Putnam County! Our hometown has gone without a grocery store for some time—he helped bring one back!
I’m a little biased, but he’s a true hometown hero!
I was able to defend a bill that would allow West Virginia students to take their test for a learner’s permit at their high school with their driver’s ed instructor. This will save time for all of us at the DMV.
The bill passed the House of Delegates!
West Virginia has the ability to construct more lakes & hydroelectric dams with the federal infrastructure package. I am proposing the creation of the WV Lake Development Study Commission to determine where these could go in our state. This could be huge for tourism!
We just passed a bill requiring West Virginia students to take a personal finance class. Kids will finally know how to balance a checkbook, pay their bills, & understand taxes!
Watch my weekly update:
Similarly, many of those same conservatives who are now defending Coach Huggins were just attacking Bud Light for saying something they didn’t agree with a few weeks ago.
The Mountain State is the most beautiful in the nation. With New River Gorge National Park being the newest in the country, we need to renovate our aging campgrounds & cabins for the influx of new tourists.
We voted last week to spend $42 million to do exactly that!
We had a fantastic dinner at Mar-a-Lago last night with former President Donald Trump & the First Lady for the Spirit of Lincoln Gala! I look forward to working with conservative leaders across West Virginia & the nation for our State Senate campaign. I’m moved by the invitation!
Across the street from the bunker where Hitler killed himself is the official Holocaust Memorial in Berlin, Germany. The most somber moment from my visit to Central Europe was walking through this courtyard of silent concrete pillars that represents 6 million lost souls.
The last two years I’ve tried to support small West Virginia businesses rather than large chains. Great to stop by Danny's BBQ Stand in Charleston for great food and conversations!
This week, I will be traveling to Germany & Belgium to represent West Virginia at meetings with manufacturing leaders in Europe. Building good relationships with industry stakeholders is key for bringing jobs to the Mountain State.
I’ve had the honor of serving with the most brilliant man in West Virginia’s government for the last 5 years. The people of our state are fortunate to have Roger Hanshaw as their Speaker of the House of Delegates—I hope to continue working with him as our next State Senator.
Babydog says hello!
Thanks Jim Justice for inviting me and other lawmakers to the Governor’s Mansion for dinner! It’s always good to talk about improving our state with friends & colleagues.
West Virginia truly is almost heaven! My dad & I spent the day fishing on the New River and exploring our nation’s newest national park. Do you love our state as much as we do?
Higginbotham Victory!
Common sense conservatism has won this election. West Virginia has faith in me & President Trump to continue the fight. Thank you for looking beyond the ignorance & bigotry and choosing me to represent the Republican Party as your nominee!
The other day I had a 4th grade teacher tell me almost half her students were reading at a 1st grade level. In West Virginia, 1 in 8 kids have vision problems. If they can’t see, they can’t learn, but our state doesn’t require eye exams to start school.
Today, I voted for an amendment that would allow West Virginia students to play sports or participate in other extracurricular activities even if there is a teacher strike going on. We shouldn’t punish the kids, and I’m glad that it passed.
What are your thoughts on this?
“Jennifer, I may look 13, but I can assure you I govern like I’m going on 30.”
It was a pleasure to meet with West Virginia native Jennifer Garner to discuss the importance of early childhood education.
West Virginia has the lowest percentage of adults in the U.S. with any education after high school—trades, 2-year technical degrees or 4-year college degrees.
I’ll once again be pushing a bill to ensure students know how much money they are eligible for.
We‘re celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act (TRA) with West Virginia Speaker of the House, Roger Hanshaw. The TRA has made it easier to do business between our two countries, and many people from the Mountain State work for Taiwanese companies.
@MOFA_Taiwan
Today would have been Betty White’s 100th birthday. In honor of her lifelong love for animals, I donated to one of our local animal shelters here in the greater Charleston area. It always feels good to give back especially remembrance of someone like her!
