. Aquatic Microbiology. Microbial Physiology. Cultivation. How do Microbes acclimate and adapt to a changing world?

I have deleted my ad for graduate students. I have been swamped with > 250 emails from students about the position. However, the vast majority fail to address WHY our lab, use a stock form email (e.g. AI generated), or don't have the background. A thread: 1/5
In exciting non-science news, I got engaged to my amazing partner after completing the
#transziontrek
and I couldn’t be more excited. Something good did indeed come out of covid.
As a new PI this is hard especially at a smaller university. Getting your name out there on boards, listservs, etc is important but it has resulted in more work and swamped email inbox than positive. Not sure what to do to improve it. End rant.

If any PhD or Postdoctoral researchers are interested in joining the lab to work on Aquatic Microbiology in the Great Lakes region, let me know! The Walder Foundation Biota Postdoctoral Fellowships are now open
While I don't require students to have a micro. background, showing why you are interested in the lab n taking time to research what we do is important. A few mistakes I have seen:
1) Citing a paper I am not 1st or corr. author on -- unrelated to curr. lab research
2/5
#ISME17
let's stop using the term "unculturable". While many microbes have yet to be cultured, that doesn't mean they're unculturable. It just means we dont know how to get them to grow in the lab yet. See previous unculturable clades acI, SAR11, etc .
Part of a recent rejection from a journal was: " In addition, the OTU clustering technique in the current study is outdated, which is something our reviewers do not appreciate." I can appreciate the OTU vs ASV debate, but this has to stop -- To be VERY clear none are "outdated"
2) Claiming expertise in the exact topic or board topic posted but CV/Resume shows no related experience
3) Copy and paste emails with no personalization
4) AI generated emails
5) Overselling ( I don't expect you to be an expert and shouldn't be for PhD position)
3/5
So excited to announce that this August I’ll start at
@NIUlive
in the Department of Biological Sciences! My lab will explore microbial responses to changing env conditions in aquatic ecosystems thru the lens of ‘omic and lab-based approaches 🦠🌊🧬
Another postdoc announcement. NSF Postdoc Fellowship in Biology due Nov 7. This will be the last year for the track in Rules of Life, interactions between genes, phenotype and environment!
There are lot of folks out there who have posted how to write emails to faculty about positions so I am not going to replicate that. I am also happy to help students, I know many receive the mentorship to help. But these emails are neither of those and its been overwhelming. 4/5
First day of school… I mean teaching. Excited for lecture 1 of practical bioinformatics for biologists . Thanks to the hubby for the
@lululemon
fit to make sure I look good on day 1.
I didn't choose to be gay, there will never be a day when I'm not gay. I feared to come out because of how people would think about me, its impact on my career. Exposure, acceptance, and equality is the only path forward. Today feels like a big step backwards 1/
Super excited to have been selected to receive a
@SimonsFdn
Postdoctoral Fellowship in Marine Microbiology, working w/
@mlcolema
in
@GeoSci_UChicago
. Be on the lookout for some new and fun Synechococcus research!
Tweeps, I am starting a Practical bioinformatics for biologist course from scratch this spring semester focused on microbes. I am putting the finishing touches on it but want to make sure it’s well rounded. It’ll be heavily hands on. anyone have lectures they’re willing to share?
Seems like not that long ago we got engaged at
@ZionNPS
. Today we make it official @ the court house n in Aug we celeb. w/ our fams in Puerto Rico. To mark the day, I woke up early, delivered flowers n

coffee in bed, n made homemade blueberry pancakes. cheers b🎉
Well everyone, I am going to be doing that "thing" on Friday, Nov. 30th at 9 AM in Williams 214. I can't wait to discuss the success n efficacy of our cultivation efforts n what we have learned ab an important microbial clade using our culture!
Nov. 30th will be my dissertation talk n defense. I won't lie this period has been one of the most stressful times in my PhD career. While the "light at the end of the tunnel" is there, I still find myself asking the imposter questions like "did I fake it enough to make it"
Metagenomics and metatranscriptomics reveal broadly distributed, active, novel methanotrophs in the Gulf of Mexico hypoxic zone and in the marine water column
Excited to be headed to the
@mlcolema
Lab at U of Chicago this winter to start my next adventure as a Postdoc in her lab. Cheers to new friends, co-workers, mentors and continued success working with aquatic microbes
Had some rough news ab the pupper over the past two days n feeling torn up. He has been through the ups n downs of my MS and PhD. Moved 4 states. Traveled 10s of thousands of miles and been w/ me through my dads stroke and start of my new family. Could use some fellow pet love
An update: Using seqs from 1 multiplexed

Thanks
@dr_alphalyrae
. I have no illusions that my lab is a R1 or large budge start up, etc. however, our lab is certain doing high caliber and competitive research. We will continue to look for strong students whether they r diamond in the rough or super stars.
Got some good news this AM! Received a Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Fund grant from

Leipzig update, I have arrived safely, my attempt of saying German words that I listened to via Google translate has received a "I like your effort but I speak English" 😂 from the bartender
Send some positive vibes for my fur child, Chip! He heads to surgery this morning. He is a grad school pup... been through MS, PhD, and 2 Postdocs. Lived in 5 cities from northern MI to southern CA.
Come check out my poster (AES-1101) and talk (session S324 @ 2:45pm in 2008 W) today (Sunday) at

"yet to be cultivated" session... I think it seems very abundant that people feel obtaining uncultivated isolates is "hard" or "impossible"... I think this is totally false and is a misconception pushed by the age of sequencing

The stress of job searching is very real. And it’s not just on applicant, it’s on our families. My partner has talked a lot about it recently and the toll it takes on them: new job, leaving stability, uncertainty, lack of foresight, unknown locations. And those just r for me
One last application for this cycle of faculty positions. Things I have learned... 1) There are many factors your have no control over and cannot predict, including "fit", 2) committees will and often pigeonhole your application/research direction based on your CV n publications

These issues are also pervasive in academia too. Recently, I withdrew from a job (in 2021!) because I was asked to sign off that I was okay with a policy that said -- in short -- I could be denied tenure if I was acting outside of God's definition of human sexuality. 2/
An exciting and humbling day. In the Florida Keys sampling microbes associated with the ongoing heatwave. Felt so lucky to be sampling w/

In three years of cultivation work we have cultures belonging to many clades that are unknown and previously uncultivated n abundant that needs descriptions but lack the time to describe. What we exactly need is more people culturing, it's not impossible it's just time consuming

How is this an acceptable policy of a MICROBIOLOGY COMMUNITY? Lets just act like the 1000s of ppl traveling from all over the world (i.e., Countries/States/Cities with high and low COVID cases), and coming together needs no precautions to protect those vulnerable.
The COVID-19 policy for
#ISME18
is now online, and says there will be no safety measures.
Which is understandable given that there are pretty much no safety measures in Switzerland.
But imagining the tension between masked and unmasked participants is already giving me anxiety.

Apparently the Thrash lab really like our mcmuffins on sampling trips... Okay in reality,
@jcamthrash
and I really like them,
@vclanclos
and Jordan r a bit more normal
Good luck to all the soon-to-be grad students as you get ready for interviews. My best advice... It's not just about fame and names. Find somewhere you feel comfortable and provides a work life balance. And remember it's as much of an interview for you as it is of them !
Another (3rd) sampling trip collect bacterioplankton and virus in a critical ecosystem after this summers heat wave is done ✅! Lucky to have a great colleague and friend
