When I'm running a game and a player fails an especially important roll, I like to say "How did you fail? What went wrong?" It won't change the outcome, but giving the player agency to define and describe their failure can help to make it a more satisfying story.

Hi! I feel like answering questions. So… I’ve been DMing and creating games all my life. I created Eberron, Gloom, Illimat, Phoenix, and more. I’ve written novels and designed MMORPGs. Part of my thesis was a LARP. And I’m a Cancer. Ask me anything!

These stories are heartbreaking. TTRPGs are about collaboration. They allow us to create safe spaces and build the worlds we want to see. But it begins with the creators and gamemasters, and we need to be better than this.
The first I saw of this was when
@kmdemat
called me earlier today to tell me. We both read through it, and it rings true to us based on our own experiences with Satine Phoenix & Jamison Stone. This is our (long) story.
Throughout, K=Katie and T=Me.
Q: What’s your
#1
piece of worldbuilding advice? A: Don’t do it alone. If you’re creating a world for personal use, discussing it with your players and asking for input both lessens your creative load and gives your players greater investment in the world and the story.
The first readthrough of a book you’ve created is always exciting… especially the game of “What typo did we miss?” Fellow creators, do you have a favorite typo?

Hektula is the First Scribe—the keeper of the Library of Ashtakala. Her fur is covered with the sigils of ancient spells, and I love how Thomas Bourdon interpreted this. This is from the cover of my upcoming book Chronicles of Eberron—Find out more here!
If I ever use tabaxi in my

, it'll be in a ruined city in the Mournland where the cats survived and were transformed into humanoids. And can't stop singing.
I just had a dream that mashed up
#Mistborn
and
#Eberron
— there were people with Dragonmarks, and then some people who could manifest the abilities of every Dragonmark. Should I stop reading novels before bed? Or should I design a feat chain for these multi-marks?
Frontiers of Eberron is available NOW, with new rules for Dragonmarks, wandslinging rules and feats, species for playing harpies, medusas, worgs, and gargoyles, and much much more! Hop on the lightning rail and get it here:

Today marks thirteen years of marriage to the amazing
@jellispants
, and it’s been the best Baker’s Dozen ever. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us both!
My mother Patricia Searle Baker passed away peacefully in Moab, Utah this Tuesday. She encouraged my sister and I to pursue our dreams and helped to make us the people we are today, and we're devastated by the loss. You can find her obituary here:
My new book Exploring Eberron is available now in the DM’s Guild, and

fact: there’s no proper pronunciation of “Cyre.” Like Missouri or tomato, there are different pronunciations in-world. [SEER], [SIGH-ur], [SEER-ee], [KEER-ee]—there’s no wrong answer. However you pronounce it, someone in Eberron says it that way too.
Rules provide concrete mechanics, but you can always add more flavor. In my
#Eberron
campaign I say that versatile cantrips like Prestidigitation and Thaumaturgy actually reflect knowledge of a host of tiny, highly focused spells. Here’s the list from Exploring Eberron!

Q: What’s your favorite piece of lore you’ve created about Warforged?
A: That instead of crying, they shiver and rustle their armor plates together, and that it sounds like rain. From this article:
I’m spending my birthday in bed with COVID, and since I can’t play games with friends I’d love to hear about a time you had fun with something I made—a great Eberron adventure, a perfect turn in Illimat, a terrible Gloom story. Thanks!
Whether you’re gathering with family, friends, or on a solo adventure, I hope there’s joy in your life. I’m thankful for all the inspiring and creative people in my life, including all of you.
Real talk, though, I did have to add a detail in Eberron that warforged components degrade when removed from their corpses to head off players wanting to run warforged chop shops.
These dragonmarked d12s were custom-made by my some of my players and given to me as a DM gift over a decade ago; there’s only around twelve in existence. (There was another one, but it’s been lost…)
When I’m playing
#dnd
or other RPGs, I like to add character quirks as I get to know the story. In our Frostmaiden campaign, my barbarian urchin hates the town of Targos. “They may sacrifice you to Auril in Targos, but being sacrificed beats having to spend a day in Targos!”
The preorder for Frontiers of Eberron is LIVE! while the preorder doesn’t include print on demand, if you preorder now — getting the free Roll20 adventure conversion — you WILL be credited for it if you later get the Print + PDF bundle!

In Eberron, the appearance of a fiend reflects its plane of origin. In this image from Chronicles of Eberron, the figure on the left is a native marilith—a weapon master with multiple arms, but using the rakshasa aesthetic. (Art by Eldon Cowgur)
Some questions you might have about
#TheZoneCastGame
-Is it McElroy Official?
--It sure is! We worked on this game with
@Twogetherstudio
and we're all very proud of it!
-Do we need a DM to play?
--Nope! There's a "team leader" to keep the action moving, but they play too!
Something I’ve enjoyed with Chronicles of Eberron is continuing the adventures of our iconics in the artwork. My favorite is Rusty, the ruinbound dwarf warlock, seen here with the kalashtar Gentle. Learn more about Chronicles of Eberron here!

Q: What keeps you interested in Eberron after all these years?
A: There’s still so much of the world that has yet to be explored, and questions—the impact of war, dangers of corporate overreach, the nature of “monsters”, everyday magic—that are still just as interesting to me.
My latest
#Eberron
post deals with the burning question of whether a warforged envoy can integrate a vehicle. Can you have a team of warforged Transformers? And how would they work if you did?

"Here we see a barbarian on the Path of the Beast entering their rage and assuming the aspect of a beast" ... or possibly a shifter just, y'know, being a shifter. It's hard to know for sure.
New barbarian subclasses—the Path of the Beast and the Path of Wild Magic—charge into D&D in the book Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
Here we see a barbarian on the Path of the Beast entering their rage and assuming the aspect of a beast.

Today! We're launching some Keith Baker Merch and sharing the details about the upcoming Eberron book - Chronicles of Eberron - coming to
@DMS_Guild
very soon. Read all about it here:
Things I’ve learned today:
1. Some of my novels were harvested for AI learning.
2. They didn’t harvest The Queen of Stone, which is my favorite of my novels.
3. I’ve written a book called “Fathers of Football.”
This is a lot to take in.

is amazing. The work he's done for Exploring Eberron, Chronicles of Eberron, and now Frontiers of Eberron is one of my favorite elements of each book.
Well well well, since it has been revealed, here it is my Quickstone map! Working with
@HellcowKeith
on this new micro-setting for Eberron has been an honor and privilege, especially because I'm currently DMing a campaign in it!
What secrets have yet to be revealed? Coming soon to the
