So typical--this disgraceful way orchestra management does its best to hide the fact a new work is on a program. It's maddening and insulting (& probably counterproductive.) Art museums and dance companies wouldn't do it, but orchestras are creaky, risk-averse behemoths.

Due to the movie, there is suddenly a lot of interest in J. Robert Oppenheimer, and that's a good thing. I've read a pile of books about him. The best by far is this one, in part because the author makes the pre-war adventure in the world of physics so compelling.

This @deutsche_oper production: painful to even think about. "Nixon in China" is so often mistreated or misunderstood. In 35 years I've only seen 2 productions that got it right. This one? Clearly a disgrace. But we composers can only babysit our creations for so long.

Amazing but true: students in Utrecht, Holland have made their own production of "Doctor Atomic". Reports from from friends say it's pretty terrific both musically and for the scenography. That's one very difficult opera to mount. In the meantime, I think I'll have a cold one.

Thought I'd do some composing in my room at Liceu here in Barcelona on La Rambla, but it's not quite as solitary as I'm used to in my hut up on the CA north coast. Hope that mob is looking to buy tickets for tonight's performance, but it's probably KFC they're headed for

Delighted with how our Barcelona "Antony & Cleopatra" is shaping up. I never know my pieces until I conduct them myself. This is one difficult score but the marvelous Liceu Orchestra is gonna nail it. Stay tuned, or better still, book a flight to Barcelona!
