I profoundly hope that commercial producers and the city are already brainstorming ways to put shows outdoors for spring/summer 2021. And to ANNOUNCE those plans AHEAD OF TIME, so that tourists will come. Hamilton in the Delacourt! SIX at the Coney Island Boardwalk!

The owners and operators of all 41 Broadway theatres in New York City will adopt a “mask optional” policy for the month of July. Audience members are still encouraged to wear masks in theatres.

Why not reopen in waves? 1) Zero Audience: casts that can be filmed & livestreamed 2) Small Audience: groups under 50 people sitting cabaret style 3) Mass Audience: conventional seating. Each wave triggered by public health numbers 1. death reduction 2. Antibody tests 3. Vaccine

Baffled by the Economist's article about Broadway. There's a graph meant to shock, which actually shows that 2023 attendance was the same as 2014. Is that...so bad? Wracking my brain for some outlier show that might have opened in 2015 to skew numbers...it'll come to me...

Last week I went back to Sweeney Todd to see Nicholas Christopher & Jeanna de Waal, there 'til the Foster/Tviet duo take over on 2/9. I had heard astonishing things...which still didn't prepare me. Christopher in particular is shattering; go now, when you know you can see him. 🥧

Directors, this is JUST the cue you need to go full gender reveal party at the end of your next Twelfth Night. I want Viola to gather everyone around a cake...Orsino cuts it dramatically....and whammo, it's pink inside and then pieces are handed around to audience

The only gender reveal party that interests me is the one at the end of a Shakespeare comedy where everybody who's been crossdressing up until this point dramatically reveals their disguise and gets married to a duke or lord

reading the article in today's times about the devastation this will wreak on commercial rents (who needs an office building now?) makes me think the state needs to up investment in arts, culture, parks, restaurants...otherwise there will be no reason to live here...

Not only are there exciting people involved with this, but I'm thrilled to find a place where the short-run show gets a little attention. Every media place I've ever worked has had real trouble covering/registering the quantum foam theater; I'm hugely grateful for this project

WHOA. Shia LaBeouf put his muscle into co-founding Slauson Rec, a local community-based theater in Los Angeles, and they just mounted what looks like an extremely sophisticated hybrid drive-in/live performance show. I can not figure out what part of this I love the most.

Speaking purely selfishly, as someone who only wants to write about theater--losing the Village Voice means losing one of the only pitch-able places for freelancers. Their legacy meant they were always interested in weirdo theater.

The New Ohio closing is the final blow to "downtown" as a meaningful metaphor for experimentation. The key venues (Bushwick Starr, Brick, Choc. Factory, Target Margin) aren't, if you look at a map, "downtown." HERE, Woosters, Westbeth etc. remain...but the trend is diffusion

hypothetical: so in an all-vax audience, what do we do when someone unmasks? Say, an elderly person, whose vax may have worn pretty thin by now? Who coughs, terrifyingly, for a minute? Do we just sit, frozen, unable to interrupt the show? Asking for a friend, my heart, the world

Yet again, we've got a show that takes the name of a classic but is actually a new play. Simon Stone's Yerma, Stone's Medea, now Robert Icke's Enemy of the People----I love a modern treatment, but would it be so difficult to come up with a different title?

a lovely theater goes out of business in Boston---and the AD says it's because the Globe stopped sending second stringers to review the shows. I'm a critic, maybe you won't believe me. But the crisis in criticism is a crisis in theater.

May we all find pleasure and discovery and challenge in our work for twenty four years. Bravo to Ben Brantley, who became to me the most familiar face in any theater--he was downtown, he was out of town, he was climbing the stairs to the Access Theater, he was on the aisle. Vale.
