I hate how
#inaccessible
access is... I can't use the
@Yale
accessible shuttle without a medical note stating I use a wheelchair...but I'm new to the USA, so the earliest appt I could get was 2 months after my start date. I can't get into the office... 1/
@Yale
I'm just so tired of "accessibility". If someone requests the accessible shuttle, it should be granted - no questions asked. TBH it's not better than the regular shuttle. Just ableds thinking ppl will abuse it, but as usual it just makes it
#inaccessible
3/
@Yale
A Canadian note does not work... or the fact that I'm in a wheelchair. I was told to "start the request now because it takes time to be approved", but I can't start the request without a US doctor's name and information.

My
#UBC
building just stopped mask requirements and lo and behold folks walking around yesterday without masks on test positive for
#covid
today… packed up my office and I shant be back. Thanks fam for keeping your
#disabled
peers safe
@Yale
I'm exhausted and frustrated. On top of my regular just being in tremendous pain today, but wanting to go work and interact with colleagues... but I can't without paying for an Uber... which I shant. I already have
#DisabilityTax
for other things 4/
@Yale
@UBC
I'd just really like to be able to participate and do my postdoc like everyone else...
On a side note, I'm loving my project and the people I work with and are so awesome!!!

@Yale
@UBC
Even if I wanted to drive in though, I have to ALSO be approved to use a disabled parking spot on campus... which again requires a doctor's note. Alas, I will stay home today and must cancel the meetings I had today :( 6/
@Yale
I could drive in, but I had asked whether there was an option for a subsidy for accessible parking before I arrived, because the parking is expensive, but there wasn't anything (but that's generally the case, as it was at
@UBC
) 5/
Some days I don’t feel like going to campus
@UBC
not because I don’t want to teach or research, but because I’m tired of hurting myself trying to navigate the

campus 🧵 1/n
A thread re: response to our paper.
I am glad that this paper has gotten so much attention. I’m happy to discuss the article academically and thoughtfully.

Are you a
@UBC
grad student? There is a disabled grad student association (DGSA) and all are welcome to join! It's an opportunity to discuss frustrations, get support and advocacy help, and build community. Pls DM me. UBC folk please RT.
When I took this photo I had just found out I received a postdoc fellowship and it was

day. I felt amazing. Immediately after, a person came up to me and said "seeing you reminds me of how grateful I am for my health"...

In the past academic calendar, I have spent approximately $1500/month (~$18,000/year) on medical. As a graduate student at

, my stipend is $24,000/year. In order to pay rent in a city where the average 1-bd is ~$1900/month... a thread

This week I ran a workshop where I presented my research findings about barriers experienced by disabled academics during applications for Canada Research Chair positions. My work explored the ableism in academic metrics of research productivity 1/
#Disabled
Tomorrow I'll be condensing the last 5.5 years into a 1-hr exit seminar for
@UBCBotany
and other folks. PhDs (feel like they) happen really fast sometimes.
This year International Day of Persons with Disabilities is highlighting that not all disabilities are visible. Disabilities are diverse and they can be dynamic. I have
#EDS
and I never know what my day is going to be like 1/
The worst part of being disabled is all the bs hoops and bureaucratic nonsense that the non-disabled do to us. So really the ableds shouldn’t be scared of us or becoming us, but rather scared of themselves.
I’m sure a lot of grads are in this boat, but I haven’t made the network I wanted to by this point, I haven’t learned what I hoped I would. It’s been hard not being F2F to collaborate and problem solve and I feel like I’m so behind now

Today I was so exhausted after having to navigate this, often pushing and hurting my arms and back to get into these spaces. I felt sick as I was teaching because I felt like I was not actually wanted.

All of these doors are labeled as
#accessible
, but they are not. I am not including the two other doors I had to go through on my way to teach that did not have any attempted accessibility measures 5/
The doors that have attempted accessibility are only ones to enter buildings and restrooms. There are for entering research, teaching, or learning spaces. What I hear from this is: “disabled ppl come see the building, but don’t work, teach, or learn in it” 6/
Feeling pretty low. One of the main measurements of a thesis chapter turned out faulty due to machine and communication error on correct use. I spent so many hours working on it, hundreds of plants, and I'm just so devastated.

We took a risk in writing this paper as ECRs, but we believe it’s an important conversation to have. How can our field diversify the people and the questions we ask? What questions are missed? What remains unturned? How has/does our field contribute(d) to harm/improvement?
14/14
Trying to enter the building I teach in. The video shows me pressing the button to open the door and it not working. I had chose this door because the laneway to the other “accessible” door was blocked by vehicles
#InaccessibleAccessibility

There are no accessible doors between the research and teaching wings of one of the buildings I work in on campus…what does that say? This is a new biology building built within the last few years…

“We’re missing 25% of our population’s perspective on virtually everything in the world.” Dr. Danielle Peers referring to the lack of disabled scholars in academia
#DisabilityTwitter
#AcademicTwitter
Disabled people are discriminated against and weeded out at every level of academe, with greatest numbers in undergrad and lowest in faculty positions, even tho the disabled population increases with age
#DisabledInAcademia
#DisabledInSTEM
3/
Not only are disabled people weeded out, but there isn’t accurate data of proportion who are disabled because institutional ableism and stigma around disclosure means we don’t know who we have and we lose disabled voice representation 4/
#AcademicTwitter
As for the loss of disabled people in evolutionary biology from the rhetoric etc. This is a firsthand experience for us and many people with whom we have spoken. Students being told that without medicine they would be the “weak” or the “unfit” individuals is exclusionary.
12/14
I am looking into equitable research productivity assessments for disabled scholars, since the percentage of disabled faculty is incredibly low, with figures as low as 1% to 7% identifying as disabled
#AcademicTwitter
2/
We highlight the framework evo biology was built on because we believe it is important to understand that the way we do "good science” has bias, regardless of how unbiased we wish to be. We cannot outrun bias but rather need to meet it head-on to learn and move forward.

Has
#UBC
thought about requiring lectures to be available online? One of the biggest ways illness spreads on campus is due to fear of missing important material when sick. This would also be great for the EDI Action Plan for
#accessibility
@ubcprez
How about we have a requirement
#Botany2022
instead of just asking? Many folks are getting incredibly anxious. You have some “accessibility” measures in place with video uploads already, how about making in-person accessible too?
Hey

With the current policy, I respect Johanna’s decision to sit it out this year.

How long do you think it will take me to learn how to spell glaucuscens/glucusens/glaucasens/glaucescens?
It’s an endless cycle, because we need more scholars to be open about disability, in order to make it better for other disabled folk, but then the non-disabled stigma around disability can harm the individual’s career. 5/
By diversifying, we don’t just diversify the faces of the field, but also the background, motives, ideologies, and understanding. This is a good thing! This is how we create new theories, ideas, methods. This is the core of our paper, not language policing.

We should always be cautious about assuming that we know all consequences of diverse phenotypes. It is context dependent and often we are not observing all contexts.

When we wrote this piece we wanted to initiate a discussion about “ableism” in evolutionary biology, the nature of what is considered “fit,” and what questions we aren't asking.

Just had a lovely call with
@kheyduk
to ramble about my anxieties re: post-doc, moving, living costs, finding advisors that share your interests & values. It's so important to have these conversations. Thankful for Karolina being open to chat with me.
I originally did not intend to go into EEB after my first university courses, bc the way it was taught was exclusionary of diverse perspectives/experiences, including my own. But I fell in love with plants and realized my passion for plants could only be satisfied thru EEB

So…I’m having an anxiety attack-I’m hiring undergrads to work closely with and I can’t ask about vaccination. If the right to education is for all…why can’t a graduate student require vaccines to help get their PhD work complete?

We did not expect the main takeaway to be language policing. For the most part we encourage folks to be very clear with the words they use and what weight/history they have. We did not argue to get rid of these terms altogether. We agree that would be a nightmare.

We thank those that have engaged in thoughtful dialogue with us, critiquing or praising the paper, and are glad for those who are enthusiastic about feeling seen. Philosophical discussion and debate is what science is all about!

Let's start the body authenticity movement!
Lately I have seen lots about body acceptance rather than body positivity, but it still creates a binary ideal of what the body is based on the abilities of bodies. This others disabled bodies 1/

I have a connective tissue disorder and chronic illnesses. I am a massive plant nerd, studying adaptations to drought. I wish allies would recognize barriers we face, so that we didn't have to run into them ourselves
People always mention healthcare in Canada as being free, but this is not the case. There are a lot of aspects to healthcare that are not included in the system. Including physiotherapy, massage, chiropractic, therapy, certain prescriptions and aids, etc. 8/

As for some of the language, many were upset re use of antiquated terms. In the supplemental materials of the paper you will find a table of the use of “survival of the fittest” in evolutionary research papers as recently as 2020 and in sci comms as recent as 2021.

Sometimes a body doesn't do what you want it to do and it is okay to be angry about that. Being body authentic would give space to claim that discomfort without having to be trapped by societies ideal of what a body should be capable of.
