The animals breaking the internet - and why it's good for our mental health
The good news: an astonishing 98.2% of over-60s in Scotland are now fully vaccinated. That's an amazing uptake. It doesn't mean they are 100% protected of course (and especially not when case rates are high) but their risk of hospitalisation/death is cut by over 90%
Care home Covid deaths falling nearly 10 times faster than general population.
Care homes: 68 in week beginning February 1 compared to 116 in week beginning January 4 (down 41%)
The overall decline in Scotland's Covid deaths over the same period is from 392 to 374 (down 4.6%)
Hospitalisation data for the first time showing impact of boosters in Scotland.
Rate of hospitalisation with Covid is 10 TIMES lower in boosted individuals compared to those who have had two doses - and that's after age-standardisation
2.77 vs 29.7 per 100k (and 34.5 unvaxxed)

@heraldscotland
on why
#CovidIsNotOver
for so many Scots who are still living very restricted lives - but who say ppl "dont want to know"
1) Latest antibody data from ONS indicates that the prevalence of Covid antibodies in community as of week ending June 20 was 85% Scotland; 90% England; 87% Northern Ireland; and 92% Wales - and yet cases are still soaring across UK. Why? Various possible reasons:
Covid is continuing to cause more disruption to the health service than all other infectious diseases combined (norovirus, flu, RSV etc) when in comes to sheer numbers of ward closures. That's a major headache for NHS capacity and recovery
Striking graphs from
@TravellingTabby
which demonstrate just how much the increase in cases in Scotland is being driven by infections in young (esp. 20-24s) rather than the 65+ age group
Also helps explain why we're not seeing cases=hospitalisations in same way
THREAD Scot Govt says key test for Glasgow is how well vaccines are 'breaking the chain' between cases and serious illness
What does the data tell us so far?
Take the wk/ending May 18*:
- There were 1,964 cases; hospital admissions averaged 9.6 per day; ICU 0.3 per day
Probably the most depressing graph in a very depressing report on Scotland's drug deaths. Yes, it has always been the cases that drug death rates are highest in the most deprived areas, but way this gulf has widened from 2013 onwards is just appalling
Effect of the pandemic on dentistry here: 76.5% year-on-year drop in courses of dental treatment for adults.
That's 3 million fewer treatments administered than in 2019/20
The revelation that CMO went to her holiday home 2 weekends in a row when the original statement said it was a one-off is particularly excruciating. Understand that this only conceded after press tipped off that she had been there previous wknd 😳😳
#neverthecrimealwaysthecoverup
Oddity in latest data from Scotland: Covid case rates lowest since mid-Dec in unvaccinated, and death rate twice as high in double-vaccinated than unvaccinated (all after age-standardisation and per 100k).

Vaccine passport will NOT be extended to additional venues in Scotland (for now) - but Nicola Sturgeon notes situation 'precarious'.
However, proof of a negative lateral flow can now be used to access nightclubs, large events etc as well as being fully vaccinated

: number in hospital has gone from 65 on july 10 to 420 by sept 10.
But the way we count Covid cases in hospital has also changed which makes it difficult to gauge situation now, versus a year ago
'Pirola' cases also up - but surveillance massively down👇
Finally: there were 1741 deaths recorded in Scotland, for ALL causes, in week ending April 5. That compares to an average of 1098 for the same week in the past 5 years ie: there were 59% MORE deaths last week than the average. How many Covid19-linked but not recorded as such?🤔
The combination of highly-transmissible Delta strain (R number estimated at 6) plus the fact that the Delta strain has weakened the effectiveness of vaccines at preventing *infection* makes herd immunity much harder, if not impossible, to reach:
Puzzled by the '50-80% of population could be affected' comment from Scot Govt briefing - even in Hubei Province, the epicentre of the outbreak, the confirmed case/population ratio = an incidence rate of just 0.1% ?? (WHO, March 1: 66,907 Hubei cases to date to 59,170,000 pop.)

Finally seeing signs of a sustained fall in new Covid cases in Glasgow - down 38% since November 7 (from average of 289 per day to 177.9 per day by yesterday - Nov 22).
The 7-day cumulative rate is also falling: from 288.7 per 100,000 on Nov 1 to 220/100k by Nov 20 (down 24%)
2) People who have been vaccinated once will have antibodies, but a single dose only reduces the risk of infection by around 30%. Two doses vital against Delta (and even then protection from symptomatic infection is roughly 60-80%)

Uptake is encouraging in younger population too, but there still 30% of people in 18-49 age group yet to get a 1st dose.
In the 18-39 age group, 38% still unvaccinated(nearly 600,000 people) - some will have Covid antibodies from infection, but still a lot of potential spreaders
4) There is still a substantial portion of the population either unvaccinated or partially vaccinated (only 63% of ADULT population fully vaxxed), who are most likely to catch and spread it - particularly as they are the younger, more social end of the population

EXC Third mystery spike in baby deaths probed amid 'upward shift' in infant mortality
Separate PHS report also suggests that antibody prevalence in 0-19 age group in wk beginning June 21 was just 23.6% (given that vast majority ppl in this age group not eligible for vaccination, this mainly signals prior infection)
Latest ONS antibody surveillance report:
As of week ending July 4 in Scotland 88.6% of adults (ie. people aged 16+) were estimated to have Covid antibodies (based on extrapolations from random population surveillance)
But the age breakdown is the striking bit...
Have been trying to get some clarity today on how the over-70s rollout is going to work - and it's a bit more complicated than it first appears. Depends if you are over or under 75, your health board, and even your individual GP surgery...A THREAD

First time PHS has included vaccination of 16/17 age group in daily update - so far 31% of people in this age group have had a 1st dose Covid vaccination
Separately, 40.9% of 'higher risk' 12-15 year olds have had a 1st vaccination
& 78.9% of adults fully vaxxed
