Supporting the death penalty is cringe. Endless data shows it doesn’t deter crime, wrongful convictions happen even with safeguards, and it’s undeniably harmful to co-victims. I’d rather enact policy that works to keep communities safer. The death penalty is security theater.

I’ve not said much about this, but as someone in one of the high risk categories, I’m over the casual statements surrounding COVID19 that deems the elderly and immunocompromised as expendable. It’s pretty gross. That’s all.

For the millions we waste on the death penalty, we get nothing in return. The punishment fails to deter crime. It also fails to get the right person at an alarming rate — there have been 172 death row exonerations since 1973. OH is home to 9 of those.

💯. This applies to the death penalty AND the CJ system overall. Ohio’s criminal code has grown drastically due to tragic anecdotes that serve as catalysts for increased penalties, which leads to over-criminalization. Data should inform policy, not feelings.

The death penalty also isn’t applied based on the severity of the crime. The main determinants of receiving a death sentence are: - county where the crime was committed (gotta have the $$) - race of the victim - defendant’s access to adequate counsel - the county prosecutor

The death penalty is not a deterrent to crime because most criminals do not expect to get caught. And because of the money we waste on security theater like the death penalty - they’re making a pretty safe bet, most crimes aren’t solved.
