Yesterday I saw a kid skateboarding at a park by himself. He was attempting a trick for over 45 minutes. He fell, A LOT, but kept getting back up. Maybe us old people should stop complaining about “kids these days” and do a better job at tapping into the resiliency they have!

Why I love jump rope running. A thread.... 1. Coordination/timing. Most athletes will want to take two steps per rope swing as this is how many did it when they are younger. Changing the rhythm poses as instant challenge.

Top down training? 1. Brain 2. Breathing 3. Foot/ankle I'd argue these are the most important items in training. The brain always wins. You don't breathe, you die. The foot transmits force from above.

In a school which is 1:1 (student:tech device) there is no need for phones to be allowed in the classroom. I’d argue it is the biggest deterrent of learning in the past 20 years….and it’s not even close.

World class speed is different. What could he have done in his prime? One thing we’ve heard from many fast football players is the speed found on the track is “something else” than what they find on the football field. Football and T&F remain a no-brainer of a pair.

I teach math. The equation below doesn’t hold up. No one can offer more than “it depends” when it comes to squatting and sprinting. Want to be really fast? SPRINT! A track program which prioritizes speed will always remain a great option for those interested in getting faster.

This year I’ve started to write workouts by hand. In year’s past I’d refer back to a electronic doc and adjust. Starting with a blank piece of paper has enhanced my creativity and allowed me to focus on the athletes I am currently dealing with.

Plyometrics....a thread.... I've recently seen posts saying not to use plyometrics as conditioning. I agree with this 100%, and I generally hate the word conditioning, so take this for what it is worth....

Over the past 3 years, @HFtrack_field has scored 129 points at the state meet, finishing 5th, 2nd, and 2nd. If my math is correct, the next closet totals are 101, 87, and 85. A truly amazing run!

My 2 year old son had a soccer class yesterday. He won a race against 5 other kids by at least 15 feet. If his dream school doesn’t offer him in the next 48 hours, I think he is just going to go pro. Or MAYBE.... We should just enjoy the present and let the future come to us.

The acceleration vs. Max V debate bores me these days. The reason you expose ANY athlete to Max V is it is the greatest training stimulus that can be given to the nervous system.

All schools partaking in a track and field sectional should pay a fee to the host. I think $500 is reasonable. Huge undertaking to do well. Currently little incentive for the host to do it. May result in more schools seeking to host.

When I met with freshman football, I was asked “what does track do for punishment if the sport is running?” Practice is privilege - you are asked to change behavior, and if that doesn’t happen, you are told to leave.

If your punishment for athletes is exercise, the punishment only lasts as long as the exercise. Remove them from the group and limit their status, the punishment lasts until you give it back. Ask any athlete what they miss most when they retire- the group.

If I coached a field or court sport, my speed sessions would follow a 4 day rollover, most likely hitting 3 per week, but sometimes 2 or 4. - Acceleration - Max V (linear) - Change of direction - Curvilinear Hybrids could be used when necessary.
