Boy, can this bull run! 🐘 Phabeni is full-steam-ahead on his adventure out with the gang, with his dinosaur blanket giving him extra flight as he races down the dirt road of our wilderness. Nandi, Lammie, Spotty, Herman and Adine are all out in force to support Phabeni!
We are devastated to have to share this news with you today. Little Phabeni has passed away in our care, following a seven-month battle of ups and downs with his health.

A baby elephant and a butterfly 🦋
Little elephant Phabeni looks extra adorable here as he lies down in the orphanage garden. Stretching out his tiny (and hairy) body on the grass, with a butterfly floating by. We could live in this moment forever 💕
A new day for orphan bull Phabeni as he walks with his adopted elephant family 💚🐘🙏🏽 These are the moments that make us so proud of the work we do!

Save the Elephant Day 💛 As South Africa’s first dedicated elephant orphanage with a homestead for orphans integrated into a herd, our purpose is to care for every orphaned elephant that is brought into our care at HERD, help them rehabilitate and integrate into a nurturing herd.
On chilly days, we all need an extra layer or two. Phabeni is wrapped up in one of our favourite baby elephant blankets, one that was donated by a cat lover and found a new use and home with Khanyisa, before being passed on to Phabeni. What a tale these threads could tell… 🧶
Khanyisa marches after Adine on a morning in the bush, between Klaserie and Mambo, with Kumbura following after her closely. The beautiful skies light up the new day as the elephants head through their wilderness home together.

Walking with giants! We catch up with the herd on foot as they move through the reserve with their carers guiding them. Where the herd goes and feeds during the day changes so to give a break to the vegetation and prevent overgrazing or damage to the land.
Active growing bulls need lots of fuel! Carer Last is on hand with milk bottles for Phabeni as he is joined by the herd for his bush drink. New surrogate mother, Setombe is right beside him and enjoying her own snack of a huge tree branch. 🐘💚

Up close with elephant bull Sebakwe 🐘 He’s by far the biggest elephant in the herd, towering over Adine as he comes over to greet her. But he’s still ‘seun’ to her. That’s ‘seuntjie’ without the diminutive suffix. So Sebakwe simply went from being ‘little boy’ to being ‘boy’ 💕
On a morning at the orphanage, Phabeni is not overly interested in our human toys, and much more eager to follow Nandi the German Shepherd about 🐘✨ Carers Joshua and Herman will have to see to the gardening on their own.
African elephants have a very complex family structure. It’s a cooperation between all the females. Usually the cows are all related, but in our herd, the older females are not linked by blood. They still care for the young, though, and do so together.
Guess whose little tusk has emerged! Phabeni has cut his first tiny tusk and we are so glad for him, as the discomfort should hopefully ease. This area appeared very swollen and certainly looked painful for many weeks. Now we wait for the second tusk to show.
Blooming friendship with Phabeni and Joshua 🐘
Phabeni's feisty spirit is on full display as he plays in the garden with Joshua, showing off his lively personality. The carers form deep emotional connections with the elephants, and the cross-species connections are unbreakable💚
Please send Phabeni your positive wishes and healing thoughts ❤️🩹 The little champ is not doing well today. He has no energy which is certainly not how we know him to be. He is usually our little feisty fighter.
Heartbreaking News 💔🐘🙏🏽
We are devastated to share the news that Fenya, who fought so incredibly hard to hang on and survive the effects of a brutal and cruel snare, has taken her last beautiful breathe and passed away, surrounded by the love and care of our team.

Amazing Scenes of Pink Baby Elephant Khanyisa Swimming & Climbing on Timisa 🐘💖
Khanyisa looks extra pink in this scene of her swimming with her herd! Or rather, with Timisa! She can’t get enough of her favourite little playmate.
You’ve seen a pink Khanyisa, but have you ever seen a red Khanyisa? 🐘 Khanyisa and Timisa are having the time of their lives rolling around and climbing over each other, and getting covered in red soil in the process.
Sunshine walks with the elephants ☀️
As the sun starts to set, the elephants head home for the evening. You can see Khanyisa walks faster and faster as they get closer to the homestead (where her milk bottles are waiting for her).

Phabeni enjoys a drink of water behind mama Setombe on a visit to the waterhole 💦💚 Estimated to have been four months old when he was rescued in November, Phabeni is around eight months old now. And still a tiny little figure when seen beside his new family.
As we near the beginning of a new year, we remember Khanyisa’s rescue and arrival in January 2020. How far she has come since this wee age of four months 💖🐘☀️

Khanyisa here, just reminding you how much I love my milk bottles 🍼
Khanyisa is 4 years 3 months old and on her way to being weaned around the age of 5 years. It’s a slow process and for now her bottles are still helping to keep her in tip-top form for all her adventuring.
