I understand if Berserk isn't for everyone, but the implication that all of the most horrific and shocking scenes are meant to be 'entertainment for sickos' shows not only poor understanding of the story, but also a near-illiteracy for media comprehension

Possession (1980) is a fucking INCREDIBLE movie and you know what else it is? Deeply uncomfortable, repulsive, sometimes-shocking, and miserable, and all that is used to service the message and experience the film is trying to convey. Not everything visual is for 'enjoyment'

Some media isn't meant to be enjoyable at all and are trying to convey a very specific message. Berserk's philosophy lays between: everything is meant to connect you to the characters and the world, the highs of peace and action, and the lows of sickening horror and brutality

It's amazing and entertaining as a broader picture, but that doesn't inherently mean all the individual parts of the story are meant to invoke enjoyment - many parts are meant to invoke complete shock and disgust, an unforgiving reminder of what the characters are working against

(also as an aside I wanna say great stuff that is consistently fun and enjoyable throughout have just as much artistic value - the point here is just that many stories have different goals and means for messaging and what it wants to invoke from the reader)

Anyways all said, you don't -have- to like or enjoy it and there's plenty of people i'm sure aren't really in for that kind of story or content. But to try and decontextualize and discredit the story and its readers is just an objective L on the scale of the Dragonslayer itself.

sometimes i think about that kid who got named Dovahkiin by their parents as part of a challenge to win free Bethesda games for life and how miserable that family must be between their son resenting them and getting another copy of Skyrim in the mail every year or so
