Good luck to all
@NYSchoolSupts
that try to complete school reopening plans by July 31 without having full guidance on July 15. This is the most challenging task veteran and rookie leaders have ever faced and I hope policy makers recognize the work leases have done last 4 months
🤔There are also a large number of high quality leaders that have been strategizing over reopening every waking moment for the past two months that may be better qualified for this discussion and are very open to change if they are empowered by laws and regs to do so 🤦♂️
Today was the perfect day for
#lovepubliceducation
as school leaders are tasked with the most difficult and heart wrenching challenges of their careers. Not sure there is a right/wrong at this time, but no matter the decision,
@NYSchoolSupts
puts kids first in every decision
These are the faces of kids who finished their first week of public school after a 6 month hiatus (at least the 1st grader) and the face of a grandpa that can’t believe he is in the backseat
Good news! Governor announces changes to red and orange zone. 20% over a month in orange zone and 30% over a month in red zone. This is a new standard from the prior 100% testing requirement to reopen. Gov clearly prioritizing in-person learning in K-8
Governor has repealed requirement for schools to report vaccine data and for teachers to provide the information. Instead local health departments that already have this data will report it. Good change
Received this message from a
@NYSchoolSupts
summarizing how most leaders probably feel about constant upheaval and sudden changes being imposed on a daily basis
.
@jimmalatras
clarifies on the Governor's behalf that they are still looking at timing on whether to extend the school closures period beyond beyond March 31 and the 180-day waiver that goes along with this. Schools really need an answer on this by end of the week at latest
Good news for schools to start the day. The leg. has agreed to ease the path for
@SUNY
CCs to partner with schools offer dual enrollment courses at no cost to the students.
@NYSchoolSupts
top ten agenda. Thanks
@BOCESofNYS
@nyschoolboards
@EdTrustNY
for the adv. partnership
The TRS reserve fund is in the budget bill! Amazing. Costs state nothing but lets schools plan for future and avoid layoffs from rate spikes. Thanks
@DavidBuchwald
@ShelleyBMayer
@NYGovCuomo
and all the legislators that have pushed this for years
I asked this newly minted first grader “what is one thing you would change about today.” Her response, “stay at school longer!” Michaela thrilled to be back in a place she loves! Tossed in pic of taco waiting to get her from bus for good measure
Wow. Legislature and Executive appear to have agreed to essentially repeal the paid time off for voting law and restore the old language (very similar) that you only get PTO if you don’t have 4 hour before or after work to vote. Thanks
@mcnamee_briana
for finding first
Suprise...it’s 36 hours before ballots were scheduled to open and all we have is a press release identifying a delay and we still have no idea if there will be more details in a yet to be revealed EO that
@NYSchoolSupts
leaders will have to rapidly learn and comply with
I’m gonna put on my ear muffs and pretend this “hullabaloo” over masks is not happening and enjoy the rest of the weekend with all the women in my life
@brybooth
.
@NYGovCuomo
just announced that if there is a confirmed case of Covoid19 in a school, the school will be closed for a minimum of 24 hours while the situation is assessed. DOH/SED guidance on this will be released.
@NYSchoolSupts
has been working non-stop over the weekend on this
Tough job does not equal worst job!
@NYSchoolSupts
leaders have embraced every challenge of this pandemic with a goal of safety opening schools and providing as much support as possible to students and families
Why the Worst Job in Education Right Now Is the Superintendent's. (I disagree.... challenging, yes.... “worst”... no! Privileged to do this work. Keep politics out of education)!!!
Absolutely unnecessary. Governor will extend deadline to vote in school district election through June 16 provided ballot must be received by that date through mail. Districts that timely submitted ballot to voters should not be subject to this.
🚨 executive has waived APPR for the 2019-20 SY under new EO which allows tenure appointments even though no final year APPR rating. We’ve been seeking this for months
Thank you
@ShelleyBMayer
for introducing legislation to ensure the education of students is not interrupted due to the paid time off voting law. Bill provides that school and
@BOCESofNYS
employees may only receive paid time off to vote if they don’t have 4 consec. hours to vote.
NYS Assembly proposing huge foundation aid increase at 1.2 billion with total school aid of 1.5 billion increase. Double Executive’s proposal. Every district at 50% FA and all district fully funded foundation aid for 2021-22 SY
🚨 every school leader, teacher, support staff, custodian, and parent in NY should be calling their Congressperson and Senators everyday demanding state and school district relief
Thank you
@ShelleyBMayer
for introducing legislation that would increase the unrestricted fund balance limit to 8% for five years. Schools need additional fiscal tools at their disposal to manage an influx of federal funds in a proper manner.
Be still my heart. Our first granddaughter. ❤️ we loved you before you arrived and we can’t wait to meet you, our beautiful little Ruthie.
@brybooth
@Greg_Berck
big brother Blake noticed you’re sticking your tongue out. 💕💕💕 big sisters Michaela and Sophia are waiting too. 💕
Good news. The legislature has extended the ability of schools and BOCES to employ retirees without a reduction in their pension after 35k in earnings in a calendar year! This provision is extended through the 23-24 SY. Thank you
@ShelleyBMayer

@NYGovCuomo
new exec order provides clearer guidance on 180 days and distance learning. This is similar to what the Gov has said about closings and is perfectly clear again that snow and vacation days must be utilized to make up days. Also guidance on distance learning will come
DS salary cap bill is on the Governors desk for first time since 2003.
@NYSchoolSupts
strongly supports the bill. We need to retain and recruit exceptional leaders!
School leaders in every corner of the state have made the case that the current civil service system needs substantial changes to work for schools and others. These proposals would make an immediate difference in helping schools find highly qualified individuals
@NYSchoolSupts
and other statewide organizations sent this letter to
@GovKathyHochul
requesting consideration of several common sense reforms to the civil service system to address hiring shortages and improve the overall system
On
@AASAHQ
call with other states and the same situation everywhere as in NY...Schools feel like they are on their own, school leaders are under unbearable stress and pressure, and general sentiment that leaders are being set up to fail
.
@nysed
establishes new standards for regents exams for this school year. In short, if you have passed the course, you are deemed to have passed the regents exam that would’ve been required at the end of the course
.
@NYGovCuomo
budget address tomorrow at 1130.
@NYSchoolSupts
will get information on the budget out once the budget bills are released and we have a moment to digest them
Thank you
@DrMaryTBassett
and
@GovKathyHochul
for new guidance clarifying boosters are NOT required to avoid quarantine. This will make a big difference in keeping schools open to in-person learning by keeping staff in the building teaching kids
The continual last minute changes, the politics, the refusal to actually hear recommendations, not just listen, shows a lack of respect for professional school leaders simply seeking to do right by their students
Since Friday, we found out that though in-person summer school was previously cancelled, we now have to offer in-person ESY; the voting deadline has been extended; and we can hold an outdoor graduation for 150 or less. All potentially good things, all upend weeks of planning.
Huge congratulations to Angelique Johnson-Dingle on your appointment as Deputy Commissioner of P-12.
@NYSchoolSupts
looks forward to continuing our partnership!
Schools are required to terminate provisional employees that they love simply because they don’t score top 3 on a test. Management doesn’t want to fire these employees and last I checked, performance on the job matters more than the test. This must be addressed
Thanks
@djgirouard
for the annual reminder of my last night working for the
@NYSA_Majority
after not having slept for a month working on APPR, tenure, 3020-a etc...good times!
When two of the kids have a snow day and important meetings on the docket, they learn what adulting is like. I think
@Stacey23AD
enjoyed talking with them more than me.

@NYSEDNews
Interim Commissioner Rosa: "The leadership of Superintendents has been inspiring..." Thank you Interim Commissioner. The simple message of appreciation goes a long way with school leaders
Thank you to
@HealthNYGov
and
@NYSEDNews
for talking about Covoid19 with
@NYSchoolSupts
leaders this morning. Student and staff health and safety is paramount and the discussion today went a long way in helping us plan and act appropriately
Thank you
@GovKathyHochul
for vetoing legislation that would’ve done substantial damage to the ability of schools to appropriately manage employees and protect students.
And
@BaldwinUFSD
Shari Camhi is officially the president-elect of
@AASAHQ
and will be president for the 2022-23 school year. Dr. Camhi will be the first president from
@NYSchoolSupts
since 2005-06
Absolutely! School administrators and nurses have been professional tracers since in person learning resumed in fall 2020. If health departments are overwhelmed and this detracts from their core mission, why are schools still contact tracing, don’t schools have a core mission???
Respectfully, this headline is misleading. School districts were always required to contact trace and make ALL the calls to parents throughout the ENTIRE pandemic to avoid having positive cases and confirmed “close contacts” come to school. Nothing changed
Happy beautiful Saturday.
@djgirouard
was kind enough to remind me of this gem. In fairness I had a 6 month old and had been awake for at least 72 straight hours negotiating APPR, probationary reform, receivership etc. These pics bring back wonderful Assembly memories
..
@SenSchumer
made an impression on
@NYSchoolSupts
leaders during our meeting with him and his staff. NY schools and students owe
@SenSchumer
a debt of gratitude for shepherding the
#AmericanRescuePlan
through Congress which would not have happened without his leadership!
ABC News confirms the CDC is expected to revise its school guidance as early as Friday, citing new research that found infection rates was similar at 3-feet vs 6-feet.
It's a change that could mean the difference between hybrid and full-time in-person learning for many schools.
New guidance on school reopening was released last evening! Pretty much aligned to CDC. Questions around what this means for schools currently using barriers and still challenges for busing and meals. 12 feet for music/singing reduced to 6 feet as well.
When you do family getaways in Brighton the local superintendent
@KCMcgowan
leaves treats at the door. Clearly should be the next
@AASAHQ
national superintendent of the year on this alone!
@BrynaMoritz
WHAT? When did schools become testing sites and administers of tests? Are county health departments going to notify schools when students and staff are tested so schools can release this info. What is happening?
This is shaking out to be school decision day for
@NYGovCuomo
. Hopefully issues such as school closures, budget votes, APPR, summer etc, could all be addressed today. But at minimum, at least we should get school closure announcement
🚨 We're giving an estimated 3,000 more school districts in high-need areas the option to serve breakfast and lunch to all students at no cost, by expanding the availability of the Community Eligibility Provision, commonly known as CEP ➡️
We decided to celebrate Halloween early bc can you get too much of Ruthie in a flamingo outfit? Plus everyone’s needs a distraction from trying to figure out who gets money in schools from the health care worker bonus portal!
@BrynaMoritz
.
@NYGovCuomo
new school closure EO goes THROUGH May 15 so earliest we have school is May 18. Maintains same requirements regarding alternative Ed, food service, child care for essential workers, and use of vacation days and emergency days for 180 day waiver
Bad news. The legislature again moved forward a bill to provide 3020-a to section 75 employees. Only moved in senate so far. Same bill
@GovKathyHochul
thankfully vetoed.
Good news. Baby Ruth and
@BrynaMoritz
are adorable and took me on a date last night so I can handle the week
Obviously big news for the education world in NYS. Agree or disagree with some of the initiatives the Commissioner has put forward, without doubt she was a tremendous advocate for students first
New school closure EO makes 1 minor but important change. Language says closed through April 29th, NOT until. This means school would open on April 30, not the 29th. Prior EO did not say “through” so this changes
@NYSchoolSupts
interpretation of the order
.
@ShelleyBMayer
kicking off first joint conference committee on education with strong statements on Foundation Aid funding and support for public schools
This is just not accurate. Are there possibly outliers, sure. But it’s not accurate to cast aspersions across all districts. I’ve listened to a number of these listening sessions and schools are responsive and respectful to concerns. They want kids in school AND safe!
.
@NYGovCuomo
on school districts: "Many more nervous parents and teachers than schools may believe." "
(Districts) being overly bureaucratic." A lot of safety concerns from parents and teachers and "districts don't underestand it."
.
@NYSchoolSupts
has been advocating along side health experts for this common sense change. This may help eliminate the need for a student with minor congestion to be excluded from school until negative test for days. Also, school staff are no longer exempt from quarantine rules
UPDATE! The NYS Dept of Health has updated its K-12 guidance. Notable among the updates is that students who are sent home for symptoms that may be COVID will need testing at the discretion of their health care provider. Full guidance available at
Made a brief appearance on the news at Menands opening day. Glad I wore my
@AASAHQ
“I ❤️ public education” shirt for the occasion. Thanks
@NYSEDNews
acting commissioner Berlin for meeting Michaela before her first day of K!
Why are school photo companies advertising braces removal and retouching for kids…maybe I just need some extra coffee or maybe companies should stop trying to get kids to not accept who they are?
I think we’ve hit the triple crown.
@NYSchoolSupts

Great start to the Senate education committee meeting with
@ShelleyBMayer

Thanks
@pblake_RomeCSD
for your
@AASAHQ
article on “our words matter”. “Our words do matter as our children are always watching, listening and learning. So I ask you: please choose your words wisely.”
@NYSchoolSupts
Biden is gonna win. So it’s a good day for an I ❤️ public education shirt even with a Senate that will try and prevent saving schools, I think Biden will get NY the necessary aid. Happy Wednesday!
