With Arsenal’s pre-season about to kick off, here is my list of things to look out for: 1. The return of ‘press breakers’ (Timber, Calafiori) should help increase our intent to play out in build-up vs high pressing teams. 🧵🔻

Ok then. It is starting to look like Vieria lined up at right interior with Ødegaard LCM (are 2 pics enough?) Pros: —Vieira w the whole pitch available too him is brilliant —big spacer next to Saka —Øde's complimentary angles OOP worries the main sticking point thus far.

Not to draw vast conclusions from extremely little/no evidence…but on the picture Odegaard is in the left half space inside the penalty box, lol. Look how natural that swing of the boot looks there. I shouldn’t need to say this but I am (half 😉) joking

Strange blend of emotions. A sense we deserved better, a weird expectancy for something more. I’m not used to this on a final day. Yet, overarchingly, a feeling of immense pride prevails. There is a lot to work on. I’m excited. The best times are ahead. Always forward.

As I was saying, Calafiori is the Kiwior upgrade. Offers more dynamism + a more diverse build-up skill set than Jakub—who is best used more centrally. Proper LCB/LB hybrid w/ Cala’s ability to lockdown static 1v1’s, navigate wide channels, and help the team ‘squeeze’ in/out OP.

My notes post Bournemouth largely focus on: 1. Nwaneri’s suitability/pathway in the LCM —battle w Vieira for early mins there —MF dynamics/organisation LT 2. Lack of tempo control w/ Partey, MLS etc (expected) + no Timber in MF 3. indiv performances of note + youngster watch

@RohanJivanAFC Lewis-Skelly’s cameo vs United was the Calafiori template IMO: channel ball outlet; dynamic arrivals higher into the half-space when Nwaneri joined the build; 3rd man runs to gobble that LCM bounce pass wide; and inverting when needed. Tailor-made for Riccardo.

Lots of Martinelli-isms to love about that Trossard cameo: instinctive attacking of cut backs, dynamic double movs in behind! Add to this his role as a technical reference on the LHS; this lends such potency to whoever is in the stretching role inside him (Rice/Kai).

From 55mins, Ode starting swinging wider/lower, luring Tielemans out the pivot. Adding that xtra lane was the KEY for us incr the tempo post Raya save. Take the 1st goal, Ode measuring on the touchline->suddenly things are moving, we've 'stacked' the RHS, and Saka is free(r).

This is pretty interesting. Most likely flexible in how we formed our build up again, with Timber/Heaven (from CB ?) and MLS (from LB) inverting—keeping things modular again. Now, which way round were Ødegaard and Vieira as interiors? Key question. Jesus more L/RW mins too.

There is no tangible need for Walker as a lockdown defender today IMO. Denmark have no dynamic 1v1 threat out wide. Instead of Trent outside the block, receiving deeper and wider in his zones, he is asked to get on the 1/2 turn vs a high press, receive inside a block… 1/5

I’m normally a tactics guy but determiners for winning are just as much the intangibles, and, in Arsenal’s case today—simply the best players stepping up. Saka (MOTM) as an outlet, carrier, last line defender, match-winner; Rice (no central access); Havertz (whole package)

5. Half-space crosses: —from the left: Martinelli allowed to cut back; Ødegaard drifting laterally —from the right: Saka + Øde + White when tucked into the 2-(3)-5

Our slight pressing tweak has also been interesting: Saka pinching higher on Villa GK's, either funneling ball towards Nedeljkovic or forcing a clip over him to Digne (who White is backing up). Partey also kept on McGinn in the m2m instead of Rodgers.

@billycarpy We’ve seen it a lot this pre-season: the 6 dropping in between and the RCB (Timber) darting into MF. Feels orchestrated and an intended detail added.

Kadioglu used very nicely too: 🔸initially tucks in to the left of Turkey’s 2-(3) build-up 🔸Ayhan can rotate + allow Kadi to overlap but mostly stay in the L half-space BTL. BUT…in terms of his usage for a team like Arsenal… 1/2

Indirectly on Merino, expect to see more of those 'scrappy' goals from Havertz there. Reach/span, assertiveness + presence to make the ball yours. It's a specific type of power - not just that dismissive striking but the ability to incr the space you're able to hold.
