"N64 emulation is hard, give them some slack!"
You're right! Good thing we figured it out decades ago!
Here's Perfect Dark running at 60FPS on 1964, an emulator from 2002, with a video plugin from 2016 rendering correctly all things the Switch emulator gets wrong.
As promised, here's a thread of what I found that is wrong with the Perfect Dark release on Nintendo Switch Online:
First thing I noticed as usual is the sound, it's way too low compared to N64 and this is not a settings issue, as explosions were equally deafening.

I just woke up to this going from 200 to 35k likes 💀
I'll try to check the request and see what I can do! No promises, I'm still learning this program, but be sure there will be more silly animations and eventually I'll try to get them all together for a mod!
The Perfect Dark PC port now has support for unlocked framerates!
Can't demonstrate it on Twitter, but here's the game running at 165FPS. If you have a display capable of running higher than 60hz, give it a try!
It has some visual issues but the game seems to be stable.
Did you know? GoldenEye was so influential, that
@Duracell
started painting their batteries like the "KF7 Soviet" from the 1997 hit videogame "GoldenEye 007" for the N64.
Perfect Dark NTSC is 100% decompiled! However, as stated by the project page:
"A small handful of functions are not yet byte-matching even though they are functionally the same."
This is why the status page still shows 97% completion. Exciting times!
There is nothing worse than watching big YouTubers "review" the N64 controller...
"Terrible design!"
"At least you can save it by using a GameCube style stick"
"These third party alternatives are so much better because it uses a modern design"
Please shut up. Educate yourself.
Here's GoldenEye running at native 4K 60FPS with mouse and keyboard, increased field of view, no black bars and mod support. Emulated. Possible since ~2012.
How do we call MS/Nintendo? Lol... Smh ... Always the "experts" with their shit takes.

Hey Hey... What are doing?...
These are not "fans" here! These guys are pro devs and they have a "budget" and also deadlines that must be met.
If those "fans" think they can do a better job than call MS/Nintendo and tell them that! Lol... Smh ...
Always an "expert" around lol
Today we hosted the first ever 8 player match on the Perfect Dark PC port. Worked amazingly well.
The shooting, reloading and weapon switching sounds are shared between all the players so it can get very noisy at times but that'll be fixed eventually.
New Perfect Dark PC port fixes and features:
- Extended menu for the newly added settings
- Dedicated crouch and kneel key
- Added blur effects
- Fixed blur reset in multiplayer (N64 bug)
- Centered HUD option
- Various texture fixes
- Xbox controller support improvements
More Perfect Dark PC port improvements from this weekend:
- Skyboxes are mostly fixed
- Most texture issues are now fixed
- Spark effects and rain properly scales with resolution
- Unfiltered text option
- Crash handler added
There's basically no reason to not play this now.
The dizzy effect is broken on Switch almost making it unplayable, this is instantly noticeable when playing the second level.
On Switch it's almost impossible to navigate just with the first levels of dizziness, and it can get to the point of freezing the screen entirely.
Perfect Dark PC online is here! Many of the issues I listed last week are fixed, but this is obviously still considered early. The progress is as always very impresive.
If anyone is experienced with networking, be sure to lend a hand on GitHub!
Heartbroken at the news of Brett Jones' passing.
His work in GoldenEye, Perfect Dark and tons other media touched millions world-wide. I hold great memories of meting Brett at Cambridge and London in 2022, my heart goes to his family and friends.
Thank you for everything, BJ.
Another day, another big YouTuber speaking nonsense about the N64 controller & GoldenEye.
My man
@TheActMan_YT
sometimes it's okay to just admit you have a skill issue.
The *FULL* GoldenEye XBLA 00 agent Longplay and a few multiplayer matches is now available in 4K 60FPS! -
I've added timestamps and updated the description with more info too, enjoy! And be patient!

It is now possible to play GoldenEye XBLA online without needing a modded Xbox 360, thanks to the Netplay branch of Xenia Emulator.
The setup for the host is a bit complicated, but users joining them won't need anything special other than a few text file changes!
The Perfect Dark PC port now has extremely early experimental netplay support!
Again, ‼️‼️THIS IS EXPERIMENTAL‼️‼️ you won't have a smooth experience and this does NOT mean that the PC port now has working netplay.

19 years ago today, 007: Everything or Nothing was released in North America!
The game used his likeness *and* voice, a first in Bond videogames, pretty much making it the final Brosnan Bond film, as it would be his last appearance as James Bond.
Is EoN one of your favourites?
New Perfect Dark PC port fixes and features:
- Option to unlock everything
- Crouch mode options
- Per-player FOV settings
- Bullet trails, lasers and bullet holes fixed
- Other texture fixes
If using framerates above 60FPS, it is recommended to not go above 150FPS.
THIS is how you treat a 20+ year old masterpiece. Since the first minute you see all the love and care that was put into this. Just wow.
Mad props to
@RetroStudios
yet again for being technical wizards. Running great on Switch.

Last week I rescued a Nintendo 64 I found in the wild expecting to use it for spare parts, as it's been outside against the weather, sun and rain I didn't expect much.... Who knows for how long it was abandoned there.
But guess what? It works - of course it does. It's an N64.
It's funny how that Family Guy GoldenEye parody from years ago was a more accurate 'faithful recreation' than the official Xbox re-release.
I'd even say they straight up ripped the 9mm ammo icon with the GLideN64 video plugin, it even features HD text!
Who would've thought. The simplest game they could make is having issues with development to this day.
Just take Perfect Dark from the N64 and build upon it. It's not that hard. Nobody needs a AAAA Perfect Dark game.
New Perfect Dark PC port fixes and features:
- Crosshair size & color option
- GE Style muzzle flashes
- Start armed option
- High detail weapon models (netplay)
- Hide client IP address in-game (netplay)
- Fix max players setting (netplay)
- 120 FPS support (netplay)
- ...
How do you prefer to emulate PlayStation 1 titles these days?
-Original resolution
-Increased resolution
-Widescreen hacks & other enhancements
I'm currently debating between original resolution & overclock for improved framerate or all vanilla, which is how I played MoH 1999.
This is total misinformation. The performance branch and patch are publicly available, and PREDATES the PC port. PC port has nothing to do with these optimizations.
On top of that, it is impossible to make it so this patch runs Perfect Dark at stable 30FPS, let alone 60...
An unexpected benefit of Perfect Dark being decompiled for PC is that the code optimizations for it can be BACKPORTED to the N64!
Last night I played one of the most hardware intensive N64 games at 60fps on real hardware!!
Right now the patch is only available on their discord
Something not very well known about the N64 Rumble Pak is that if you have two of them and dual wield any weapon in Perfect Dark while using the 2.X control style, the controllers will vibrate individually to the gun being shot!
Did you know about this back then?
Happy 25th anniversary to GoldenEye 007 on the Nintendo 64!
Released in Japan on August 23rd, and globally on the 25th.
Even 25 years later, there's still new experiences and things to discover about the game, and much more to come!

And... I think that's it! I probably forgot something that I'll add later if needed. But yeah there's no point in playing this version, it's the worst. It's like playing on a 2007 emulator.
Do yourself a favour and play the PC version instead:
Here's GoldenEye XBLA running on the Series X thanks to Xenia Canary.
No audio delay, great performance, fully playable including multiplayer (no online yet). Amazing progress in such little time.
Full video on YT, with a guide on how to do this in the description!
Perfect Dark Zero is now fully playable start to finish on Xenia Emulator at 60FPS, including working cutscenes!
Say goodbye to the floaty controls and lack of music from playing on Rare Replay and enjoy it as it should!
If you never gave it a proper go, now is your chance!
This one isn't made by me but I think people should see it. This is what happens when you give a character the helicopter animations.
This comes from Carnivorous' GoldenEye modding tutorial / playground.
@Graslu00
Is there a way to make them flip upside down and spin their legs like a helicopter to fly away ? Would be funny on an open map to see them fly far away
A guy with 415,000 subscribers is re-uploading my entire Resident Evil 4 Longplay split in chapters acting as if it was them playing.
This is just funny. I could take down their entire channel in a few clicks. How can someone be *this* dumb.
@BIGLIVEYT
take down all the videos.
On Perfect Dark, guns would emit smoke from the barrel after firing full auto or fast enough for a bit. This causes the Switch version to lag, while the N64 version was mostly unaffected by this.
This affects gameplay a lot since... you know, this game is about shooting!
The latest build of the Perfect Dark PC port now fixes:
- Tranquilizer gun crashes
- Texture corruption
- Most of the HUD & menus
- Muzzle flashes
Also aspect ratio support for 4:3, 16:9 and higher - changes on the fly, too! Can't wait until HUD doesn't get affected by this.
@ScrewyClassic
This post is misinformation. Nothing is locked behind a Discord and the GitHub has always been publicly available. It also does not manage to run the game at 60FPS unless you're staring at a wall with nothing around you.
Today is the 24th anniversary of Perfect Dark on the Nintendo 64, we're officially in the future!
It released in the US on May 22nd, it wouldn't hit the European shelves until June 30th & Japan had to wait until October 21st to get their release!

This month will be the 27th anniversary of GoldenEye N64.
We could've been playing this for almost two years now if they allowed the development of it to continue.
Instead, we got a half baked re-release that everyone forgot about in around a month due to its issues.
From what we've seen in the Perfect Dark trailer:
- Joanna is working for dataDyne and is trying to stop Carrington
- Gameplay is a mix of stealth, immersive sim and first person shooter with parkour. Like Deus Ex meets Mirror's Edge
- Set of missions with different approaches
Tonight I'll stream the new update for GoldenEye X, which after some delays it's planned to release shortly.
Features multiplayer with bots, 9 fully playable singleplayer levels, new polished animations, many fixes and more...
Attention Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members! These
#Nintendo64
and
#GameBoyAdvance
games are available now:
✅ Turok: Dinosaur Hunter
✅ Perfect Dark
✅ The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Four Swords
✅ Metroid: Zero Mission
One of my favourite things and why I recommend the Wii version so much is being able to do things like this thanks to the motion controls - it adds so much to the gameplay feel especially during stealth sections.
This is sadly lost in later releases of GoldenEye Reloaded.
So with all the Perfect Dark discourse again... Do yourself a favour, and look for the unofficial alternatives. They'll give you a much better experience.
They did great with the GoldenEye re-release.
Used the nostalgia perfectly, everyone that didn't play the game in the last 20 years wouldn't catch on the new bugs, and with all the years of people saying the original aged horrible...
This is it. It's not changing. They won.
Finally got GoldenEye XBLA CE up and running on the new Xenia UWP version for Xbox Series X. (Works on S too)
Great for accessibility if you don't have a capable enough computer or a modded Xbox 360!
The Tomb Raider I-III remaster was made by dedicated fans who genuinely have passion for the games and have years of experience with the original release.
And it turned out great. Who would've thought? Definitely not MGM. 😉
For those who are still interested in the fate of OpenLara and my other projects, they are on hold. For the past year I've been busy with a dream project that has become the culmination of the last 8 years of my life - Tomb Raider I-III Remastered. (1/4)
The light flare effect is broken on Switch. On the original game, your hands and guns would block the shining lights from hitting your vision.
On Switch instead, they will go through any weapon and also some walls and doors.
Making a mod for GoldenEye that increases the render distance while keeping the fog and original aesthetic.
Also disabled low LOD models, so no blocky guards. Should be a great improvement for 4K resolutions. You can see each guard on the Dam towers.
What do you think?
People that say GoldenEye didn't age well can never point at what didn't age well.
Graphics and performance is a given, but the game itself is perfectly up to modern standards to this day. Emulate it at 4K 60FPS if that's such a big problem and you have a great classic.
Goldeneye N64 always seems to get flak for not "aging well," but that doesn't take away from how important it was.
Let's be clear. Goldeneye CHANGED video games. If it's not for you, that's fine! It's still one of the greatest games ever made and I still enjoy it today.
Plutonium has been updated to support 007 Quantum of Solace multiplayer! You can find the install guide on their forums.
I used to play this game a lot back in the day on the Xbox 360. So good to see it alive once again.
So... Collisions are simply broken for AI on the Xbox version of GoldenEye. This happened on my longplay last night and on the stream as well. Needless to say that this didn't happen on N64.
Happy 27th anniversary to GoldenEye 007 on the Nintendo 64! Today August 25th, the game released 27 years ago in the US.
Do you think we'll get something for the game's 30th anniversary?
This is my current James Bond video game ranking as of now, counting only the main entries since GoldenEye in 1997.
They're ordered from best-worse on each category as well. I think 007 Legends and QoS PS2 are equally bad though.
How different is this to your own?
Here's an example of some pain reactions in Perfect Dark, which has locational damage in:
- Head
- Neck
- Chest
- Shoulders / upper arms
- Lower arms
- Hands and knuckles
- Crotch
- Back and butt
- Upper legs
- Lower legs / feet
- Knees
New Perfect Dark PC port fixes and features:
- Skyboxes and water fixed
- Double reload glitch fixed (N64 bug)
- Explosions screen shake added
- Framebuffer effects for: Nightvision, IR goggles, Slayer and A51: Infiltration cutscene
- NTSC-J and PAL ROMs now supported
