In a Beep21 Interview Yasushi Yamaguchi(Judy Totoya) mentions that if he were to ever get the old team together to do a remake of Phantasy Star II it would have a 3D anime style you'd see in games like Genshin but with the Nobuyoshi Habara 80s anime influenced aesthetic.

According to an interview by Sugimori in the "Ken Sugimori Works", Sega approached Game Freak with option on several MD projects, A game which used a fast food chain’s character, a Phantasy Star sequel, or a Magical Taruruto game. Magical Taruruto was ultimately picked.

While not confirmed Eevee shares design similarities with Myau. Fujiwara and Sugimori worked at Gamefreak during their fling with SEGA so it wouldn't be shocking if they picked up some inspiration. If true this would mean Tails and Eevee share the same ancestral design lineage.

I know the Sega PuyoPuyo artstyle isn't really well liked among Puyo fans compared to the Compile stuff, but it speaks volumes to me how well a lot of magical girl characters translate well into this style. Like they chose the perfect artstyle for the market their appealing too.
