With mixed emotions we sold the farm today. Awesome farm, wrong place. Shocked how much NZ has changed in 10 years, kids have gone backwards at school here, life's too short. Plan to move back to Ireland in June👍

Amazing story on milk production in China, cow numbers and output increasing at crazy rate. So pointless taxing NZ farmers and shifting the output elsewhere. One farm increasing cow numbers from 233,000 to 500,000😱 One farm!🙄

Milking 26 into the vat for first pick up tomorrow, on 3 in 2 milkings with cups on at 6am, 4pm, 11am following @ballomes system, feels like a great compromise between OAD and TAD although it's weird finishing a milking at noon. Some cracker cows in there😍

Interesting to see plantain/clover used as a crop, 8Kg plantain, 2Kg red and 2Kg white clover. Good growth in summer, as good as PRG in shoulders, drill PRG into it in spring year 2. Growth rates 60KgDM/Ha/day in the dry, rest of farm in PRG 20👀👍

I get a lot asking how cows milk on the 3 in 2. Currently in week 5 of calving, 161/221 cows calved, 149 going into the vat doing 25 litres at near 5%F and 3.8%P, around 2.15KgMS. Diet now 1.5KgDM silage, 2Kg of PK and grass. No heifers, only mature cows milking 1/2

Chemical N mobilisation potential: nil. Chemical N loss potential: 80%+ Why spend €€€ for it to be wasted and have huge negative environmental impact? The same as giving someone €1000 for them to give you €200 back 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️ Wait for 6°+ soil temps for next 4-5 days to spread👍

Pre PRG reproductive phase dry period; Don't go to more than 25 day rotation!! Stick to area/day, as covers drop, fill the deficit. Longer rotations = stemmy grass, seedhead, decreased intakes and risk of poor residuals which the impact recovery when it rains. It will rain

Heading in the right direction with more sensible language, a far cry from "you must have 70 units applied by the 1st of April". Applying N in the current soil conditions & temps won't achieve an economic response, I.E. you will lose money on it! Hold off until conditions improve
