There’s often a lot of confusion on what kind of cases dermatologists handle. While we’re known for practicing Cosmetic Dermatology, this is only 2% of the scope of Dermatology ( @theskinsensei , 2015). Here’s an overview of #Dermatology in a nutshell 🙂

Years ago, as a Dermatology resident, a patient with severe nodulocystic acne came. He was so insecure and had stopped schooling. As he got better, I convinced him to go back and pursue his education. Now he’s graduating! Could you imagine how happy this makes me feel, too?

Let’s be clear about this. Facial centers and drip salons are not synonymous to Dermatology clinics. (!!!) Dermatologists treat psoriasis, eczema, infections, autoimmune diseases, and skin cancer. Consultation and care for these conditions are essential services.

20 years ago today, I witnessed my mom open a clinic that bore her brand. I would watch her and my dad work late nights trying to print materials, conceptualize services, etc. Over the years, her practice has grown into a distinct brand of Dermatology — quality and authentic.

Going to med school is both a privilege and a choice. Don’t take your medical education for granted as some people would give everything to be where you are, if only they had the means or were in more permissive circumstances. And if you can, it’d be great to help them out too.

As a dermatologist who has unintentionally built her practice in a pandemic, I want you to know that your physical and mental health matter more than anything. If I was able to help you with both by examining and making your skin better, that’s a blessing for us already ❤️

Lost my ward consultant today to the virus. In Derm training, I did a 3-month rotation in Medicine I reported to this doctor for a month. He asked the most challenging questions about our patients and their diseases. I had to step up my game. His inputs were always valuable.

Our patients’ healing goes beyond their condition as much as their suffering does. And we, as their health providers, play a huge part in those aspects, too. A little extra counseling goes A LONG WAY. We, too, could work small miracles. ☺️

Do IV drips work? Are they really beneficial? What are the risks? Doing a quick Google search will lead you to healthcare sites & expert interviews saying, “you’re making expensive urine” & that you could drink water & take vitamins instead. (You may not even need vitamins.) 💯

#Retinoids are indispensable in Derm. However, incorporating topical retinoids to one’s regimen could be challenging esp for sensitive skin. The most common side effect is irritant contact dermatitis in about 85%— as high as 95% in patients using #tretinoin (Veraldi et al. 2013).

This show #SkinDecision on Netflix totally resonates with me and my ikigai. People see cosmetic dermatology & surgery as vanity & perfectionism, but that’s superficial. For people like us in the industry, it’s helping people LIVE their best lives beyond their trauma & scars.

A no-makeup selfie I’m proud of! We set up and cleaned all fixtures and appliances of the satellite clinic yesterday. They don’t tell you about the manual labor and dirty work behind the “glamor” of the job. Tired but happy. ♥️
