I am pleased that this whole situation has come to an end.
I'm looking forward to visiting dCS next week, and for now the most important thing I ask is that people refrain from giving anyone at dCS a hard time. Particularly at CanJam this weekend. The individual involved is no
The most surprising thing at canjam so far has been
@crinacle
's project red. His previous collabs have been great but this is honestly going to make a lot of IEMs effectively pointless. It's seriously good
Previously it was a question of "should I pay more for lossless music", but with Tidal now being cheaper than Spotify (and paying artists more!), the question is: Why not subscribe to a lossless streaming service?
Reviewers serve the customer, not the manufacturer. If you feel there is an actual error in my methodology I am always happy to discuss this and correct it. I do not want to be publishing incorrect information.
But whilst you may not like the fact that people will test/evaluate
Please be very careful about using class D speaker amps as headphone amps. Seen a lot of people recommending Fosi stuff recently, but there are reasons Class D isn't used in headphone amps. The high impedance of the headphone can mean the output filter behaves adversely, and at
I don't really think this should be a hot take but apparently it is:
Speakers aren't better than headphones and headphones aren't better than speakers. There's amazing products in each category and it's simply a different experience.
MQA's statement is some seriously intense PR spin. 'Our new product is doing so well that we're undertaking a reatructuring initiative!...... Comparable to chapter 11 bankruptcy but let's ignore that.....'
Excited to announce that I'm currently working on a collaboration product with Ferrum
This has been in the works for a while now and I'm hyped, hopefully will be able to share full details soon!
I wasn't going to announce this until it was ready initially, but given my quite
It's surprising how headphones are generally getting easier to drive, and headphone amps are getting more and more powerful.
People VASTLY overestimate how much power they need or are using in most circumstances
I've been making a point of just sitting and listening to an album start to finish each evening lately. No phone, no watching something on the side. Just listen through.
It's surprising how relaxed and clear the feeling is after doing so. Would strongly recommend it.
Just a reminder that the most common way people get 'hacked' isn't via someone actually 'hacking' or doing any coding, but through social engineering. If someone you know asks you to do something like send money, run something on your PC, or hand over info that could be
THIS is how you handle mixed/negative reviews. Huge props to
@emmlabs
and I really wish more companies behaved this way. Absolute gentleman and I'm looking forward to speaking further with them in future!
It feels like a lot of audio manufacturers are shifting away from releasing major, meaningful new products, and shifting towards a steady stream of constant refreshes. With some companies releasing 'new', very similar products almost every month.
Are buyers really cycling
@Afinetheorem
This is true in that it isnt storage in the traditional sense and indeed is not lossless. But its also unfair to say outright that training data isnt stored at all when it can be recalled with high levels of accuracy (in terms of similarity to the original). Ai training data can
The headphone calculator is now available online. Unlike other calculators it'll provide accurate (non-rounded) values, AND will convert dB/mW specs to dB/1V and vice versa!
More tools to be added soon!
At the end of it all, Lenbrook bought MQA for..... 100k
Quite literally pennies on the dollar given the millions the investor poured into it (they had £21,000,000 debt)
Everyone needs to watch this tbh. So many people completely misunderstand the extent of the costs associated with actually building and shipping a real product
Working on a video about subwoofers right now, but what I can say is:
You need subs.
I don't care if your speakers go down to 10hz. You need subs.
Do it
With the news that MQA is seemingly trying to resurrect itself by what appears to be putting different names on each of the parts of the original MQA process to make it seem new/different, I figure it's worth sharing this again
I always get a bit sad when I see clips/photos of those insanely high end speaker systems, sometimes >$1m, but in a room with absolutely no treatment and the speakers crammed up against the wall
I'm extremely excited to announce the WANDLA GoldenSound Edition!
This has been in the works for a while and I'm hyped
If you're heading to CanJam NYC make sure you stop by the headphones dot com booth to have a listen!
I'll be completely boycotting KZ and their associated sub-brands (CCA/Joyodio) from here on out. All models will be removed in the latest Ranking List update and blacklisted from any future reviews.
@dms3tv
Definitely enough that it's an important part of getting your system sounding how you want.
Not enough that you should try to fix a bad headphone by changing your amp. Headphone swaps/upgrades are much more important but amps still make an impact.
PSA: Convolution filters and EQ BOTH alter/'correct' phase response. Please don't pay for expensive convolution filters for your headphones when you can literally EQ them for free
Did some testing on
@TIDAL
's 'MAX' update today. They are indeed playing hires lossless for many tracks, and bitperfect vs the qobuz version. BUT, many tracks which show as 'MAX' are still just MQA batch processed from the 44.1khz original, with no way to play lossless at all.
If you're wanting to know more about various different objective audio aspects particularly relating to source gear, have a look at the glossary of audio measurements and design terms! There's a lot of answers in here for stuff people often ask
I must not hype.
Hype is the mind-killer.
Hype is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my hype.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the hype has gone there will be
One thing I'd add to this: The fact that we publish negative reviews MAKES THE POSITIVE ONES MEANINGFUL It means that when we say something is good you actually know we mean it and aren't just saying it cause we say everything is good
Do not use commercial DNA testing services like 23&Me. Putting information like that in the hands of a third party for the sake of finding out 'cool facts' is absolutely not worth the risk of it getting into the hands of someone who could use it to your detriment in future.
Many
Have been testing the sensitivity of a few headphones. It's surprising how inaccurate a lot of manufacturer specs are. The Susvara is measuring a good 8-9dB lower in sensitivity than the spec
It's awesome that devices are coming out with AptX lossless support, but right now the main issue is that neither Apple nor Samsung support it!
Really hope this changes in future, but it could actually be a big factor in deciding what phone I go to next
What song has the best recording/production/mastering you know of?
Not necessarily the best song, but simply the best in terms of pure production quality
