Replacing Declan Rice: A Thread With the recent transfer speculation that surrounds West Ham's captain and star man, Declan Rice, it seems as though a move away from east London is imminent. Therefore in this thread I will be looking at how West Ham can replace their captain.

Lucas Paqueta arrived at West Ham this summer from Olympique Lyonnais for a record breaking £50 million. Naturally, with such a heavy price tag came heavy expectations, however, so far the Brazil international has not lived up to expectations, so why is this? A thread.

Defensively so poor. - Trippier’s steps are a lot bigger than Son’s meaning for less changes of direction. - Lack of upper body feints means Son doesn’t have any hesitance or reason to second guess - Not using the byline as a ‘2nd defender’ - Hesitance when he steps in

I promise you he is one of the most underrated players in the PL. Pablo Fornals is ridiculously overlooked and deserves so much more credit than he gets. A traditional Spanish 8 in possession with a combative, tenacious and intense approach in defensive phases, he can do it all.

Academies should be producing the squad players so you can spend the big money on superstars. This is the issue at West Ham. It’s like every academy prospect that comes through has to be a world-beater or they’re deemed outright not good enough. Not everyone is Declan Rice.

Notice in these clips the ball bobbles so often, putting his teammates at a disadvantage upon their reception. The bobble occurs, primarily, because of the angle his foot is following through at. He lifts his foot too much. The difference between him and players like Rodri.

I hate this. West Ham haven’t had more than 40% possession in any of their 3 games so far this season. We’re also unbeaten. In the last 2 games we’ve had an average 23% possession and scored 6 goals. Possession means nothing if it’s not creating chances.

To expand on this. Clubs like Norwich, Sheffield Utd and Watford have all prioritised the current and forgot about the future. Hence why once relegated they struggle to come straight back up. Planning for the future is a big part of squad building and Luton are doing it well.

My Solution My opinion is that Paqueta needs a consistent progressive option so that he doesn’t have to force the ball forward. Fortunately, West Ham have the player that is comfortable receiving between the lines with his back to goal, that being, Pablo Fornals.

Problems So Far Paqueta is an incredibly good passer, with excellent spacial awareness. He also possesses an abundance of flair and in combination with his brilliant first touch, it led most, including David Moyes, to believe that Paqueta is best suited to the number 10 role.

Once Paqueta returns, this system could be a perfect fit for West Ham as his tenacity and desire to win the ball back makes him a great fit out of possession. Then coupled with his composure and creativity in possession and West Ham are bound to punish teams more often.

In possession this would be my preferred set up when every one is fit. Fornals, as previously mentioned, provides the option between the lines, Cornet and Bowen would also be the runners in behind that would help both Paqueta and Scamacca to flourish.

At the start of his time in London, Paqueta was deployed as a number 10 in a 4231 but he didn’t hit the ground running. Then David Moyes, very openly, admitted to misprofiling him and switched his system to a 433 deploying Paqueta as an 8 on the left of the three.

Amass Zaroury should be on a lot of clubs targets for the summer. A width-holding left winger that is direct and confident in 1 on 1’s, is able to go in or stay outside and has the end product to match. Top recruitment from Burnley.

However, there are still issues. Paqueta is often criticised for ignoring the simpler option and instead of retaining and recycling possession he’ll often look for the more Hollywood option, but the lack of runners in behind often means he’s unsuccessful.

Not discrediting Stones, I think he’s the best in the world in his position, but there is not enough talk about Nathan Ake. He’s making light work of Kingsley Coman 1 on 1. His posture when 1 on 1 is allowing him to deal with Coman’s burst too.

Rice’s security and anticipation in defensive transitions would also cover the space that we concede by pushing the full backs high. Although I do believe that Ben Johnson could also be used as a 3rd CB in possession to form a 3-2 rest defence.

This is brilliant business. From the little I’ve seen he’s an incredibly exciting, versatile attacker that’s still quite raw. A year as a squad option behind Kudus/Bowen on the right, with a view to starting in the 25/26 season.

⚒️🇧🇷 More on West Ham and Luis Guilherme exclusive story. West Ham have agreed also personal terms with 2006 born talent, salary and contract ready. Talks at final stages with Palmeiras on €30m fee plus 20% future sale, West Ham are almost there — cautious until the end.

Deep-lying playmaker Alex Scott - 19 - Right footed - Bristol City A top prospect. Scott is able to play as a 6, 8 or as a 10 which shows off his wide skillset. A brilliant ball-carrier as he uses his quick footwork to evade pressure.

The tempo control from Palmer in such a tight space is outrageously good. Knowing when to slow down by using his sole to control or playing short passes and when to accelerate with the split pass. A testament to the change in approach from the academy system in recent years.

I think this lineup should be more than attainable and profiles every player correctly. Fornals as a false winger, using Trufferts overlap and Scamacca’s tendency to drop in will allow Soucek to exploit vacated spaces excellently. Also gets him away from build up.

That is not normal for a “defensive midfielder” to do.

Liberali is special. I’m looking at this England Italy u17 game and seeing 4 £100m+ players. Talent levels are ridiculous here.

Love this move from Kamara. Upsets the defenders balance so easily. Simple but effective moves like this are some of my favourites. Executes the skill with brilliant disguise and then uses a short burst of acceleration to attack the created space. Top midfield play.

I haven’t heard it much in football, but in futsal there is something we coach regularly, called a split dribble. Sterling exemplifies it excellently here. Dribbling through the space between 2 players to cause hesitance in the defenders head, and as a result creates separation.

Trent is the exact reason why players should be compared with similar profiles and roles not on their positions. He’s Liverpools primary playmaker, he should be in KDB and Modric debates not Walker and Reece James ones.

Braxil's 3-1-2-4 build up shape is causing Morocco an abundance of problems. - 6 has no direct pressure - 2 8s are dropping in between the lines and overloading MOR's 6 - Wingers virtually useless due to the width and focal points of Brazil's build up

This is an incredible finish and strike but the set up is what separates Mohammed Kudus (literally and figuratively). A short thread analysing the set up.

“A goal made in England” that commentary stinks. Chelsea gave up on Musiala leaving Bayern to develop him and refine his very raw game, albeit he had major potential anyway. Sane came through at Schalke, his career didn’t begin when he stepped foot in England.

Overlapping 8’s are the next tactical trend I think. So many pass-first wingers that would see their game maximised by an 8 that can hold width.

Russel Martin has set Saints up in a heavily rotational 235 on ball and a 442/4231 dependant on opp 6 position. JWP has been the primary receiver but Saints have looked to overload the first phase at times and use combinative play to escape pressure, Meghoma has excelled at this
