Late Libyan dictator Gaddafi remains highly popular among western and non-western leftists alike. Few of them know that Gaddafi was an ethno-supremacist, pushed neoliberal reforms and comprehensively destroyed the foundations of the Libyan left. A 🧵. 1/17

As an Arab supremacist, Gaddafi had banned the indigenous Amazigh and Tebu (Tûbuu) languages from being taught in school, or being used in newspapers. Giving children native names was illegal as well. An assimilation campaign reminiscent of the Turkish regime. 2/17

Under his rule, at least one Amazigh language, Tasuknit, went extinct. Gaddafi called the Amazigh a "product of colonialism", said they were of Arab origin and their languages a mere dialect. 3/17

Gaddafi didn't only persecute minorities though. Under his rule political parties and movements - in other words, political organizing - were illegal. Consequently, communists other leftists were jailed if they tried to get politically active. 4/17

The 1960s to 90s were formative years for the left in Arab countries. Gaddafi prevented this development, with drastic later consequences. As building a state only on cult of personality and a security apparatus is difficult, he built up patronage networks with Arab tribes. 5/17

These tribes traditionally follow a strict patriarchal and -linear structure. While socialist countries like South Yemen tried to contain their influence, Gaddafi re-tribalized Libya. It was an easy way for him to secure support, but it stratified social hierarchies. 6/17

Main grievances of the protesters were growing inequality, unaccountability, government repression and corruption. The protests were quite literally bread revolts. The demands were close to basic leftist ideas and could have been the base for a progressive Libyan left. 11/17

Gaddafi also started liberalization of the economy from 1993 onwards. Initially it moved slowly, because the corrupt system of patronage was already benefitting the higher-ups. In 2003, Shukri Ghanim, considered a free marketer, was appointed PM. 7/17

In the same year, he put forward a proposal for the privatization of 360 state owned companies. 2007, the Libyan government announced plans to lay off 400,000 public sector workers, over 1/3 of the overall public workforce. Relations with the West improved. 8/17

His son Saif al-Islam, who had studied in the UK and was a vocal supporter of neoliberalism, got appointed as a "Young Global Leader" by the World Economic Forum. Gaddafi did achieve a lot at promoting literacy though, but that was mostly part of a regional development. 9/17

But as Gaddafi had crushed the development of a leftist opposition, there were just no organizations that could have guided the movement in a direction. Instead, there were the tribes. And as the conflict broke out, society atomized into tribal kinships. 12/17

So it's confirmed now that it was IS "Caliph" Abu Ibrahim al-Qurashi who was killed in yesterday's US SOF raid on Dayr Ballut, Southeast of Efrîn. With the Turkish invasion, the region has turned from one of the last Syrian beacons of peace into a hotbed of Islamists.

She made abundantly clear that she views nomads as subhumans who don't have any right to their lands. This is not only disgusting, but also just not the case with Kurds. Kurdish culture has survived in secluded mountain villages for millennia, they only nomadized in the plains.

@usamabroad I never said Kurds did not exist. I acknowledged their true history as a nomadic people just like Jews. Kurdistan which has no historical existence even before nation states would be a second israel

First of all, you could credit the creators, which is @Nrg8000 in the 2nd map. Secondly, it's not an either-or, just a different map. Russian military effectively also controls these spaces in between, it's just possible that there still is minor resistance.

I think the visualization teams in many media outlets need to rethink how they map the war. Most do maps like the one on the left. But that is not reflecting their own reporting. There aren't entire *areas* that are 'under control'. On the right is a more accurate alternative.

Now we are seeing the fallout from the Turkish municipal elections, anticipated by anyone who is aware of the oppression of the Turkish state against Kurds. The rationale is clear: Get in international news for "opposition victory", then remove them when attention is gone.

This is pretty much the coordinated destruction of what's left of Rojava's infrastructure and economy. This will lead to more extreme suffering for the civilians and could possibly cause a famine. Meanwhile, the world is silent.

"Liberated"... I have no words for the shamelessness of this guy. Tugh, a village in Artsakh, was captured by Azerbaijan in 2020. The Armenian population was ethnically cleansed. The photo below is from a single visit of Udi people from the north of Azerbaijan in 2021. 1/4

As the Malian army and Wagner are approaching Kidal, they are massacring Tuareg civilians along the way, for example in Ersane. This has led to Tuareg from Niger arming themselves and joining the defense of Azawad, among them the lead singer of the magnificent band Tinariwen.

Symbolic resistance by villagers in Qeramux east of Kobanî, where a Turkish-Russian patrol passed by. It's not really news that the people of Northern Syria reject the invasion, but footage like that kind of ridicules the Turkish "liberation from PKK occupation"-narrative.
