My maps cover the topics of conflicts and ethnicity in the MENA region with a special focus on the Kurdish struggle for freedom.
Late Libyan dictator Gaddafi remains highly popular among western and non-western leftists alike.
Few of them know that Gaddafi was an ethno-supremacist, pushed neoliberal reforms and comprehensively destroyed the foundations of the Libyan left. A 🧵.
1/17
As an Arab supremacist, Gaddafi had banned the indigenous Amazigh and Tebu (Tûbuu) languages from being taught in school, or being used in newspapers. Giving children native names was illegal as well.
An assimilation campaign reminiscent of the Turkish regime.
2/17
@redstreamnet
Just came to this comment section to underline that all those losing their minds over this tweet and kissing the boots of the violent mysoginist regime of Iran need to be thoroughly pushed out of any democratic leftist organization. They obviously don't side with oppressed people
Under his rule, at least one Amazigh language, Tasuknit, went extinct.
Gaddafi called the Amazigh a "product of colonialism", said they were of Arab origin and their languages a mere dialect.
3/17
Gaddafi didn't only persecute minorities though.
Under his rule political parties and movements - in other words, political organizing - were illegal. Consequently, communists other leftists were jailed if they tried to get politically active.
4/17
The 1960s to 90s were formative years for the left in Arab countries. Gaddafi prevented this development, with drastic later consequences.
As building a state only on cult of personality and a security apparatus is difficult, he built up patronage networks with Arab tribes.
5/17
These tribes traditionally follow a strict patriarchal and -linear structure.
While socialist countries like South Yemen tried to contain their influence, Gaddafi re-tribalized Libya. It was an easy way for him to secure support, but it stratified social hierarchies.
6/17
Main grievances of the protesters were growing inequality, unaccountability, government repression and corruption.
The protests were quite literally bread revolts. The demands were close to basic leftist ideas and could have been the base for a progressive Libyan left.
11/17
Gaddafi also started liberalization of the economy from 1993 onwards. Initially it moved slowly, because the corrupt system of patronage was already benefitting the higher-ups.
In 2003, Shukri Ghanim, considered a free marketer, was appointed PM.
7/17
In the same year, he put forward a proposal for the privatization of 360 state owned companies. 2007, the Libyan government announced plans to lay off 400,000 public sector workers, over 1/3 of the overall public workforce.
Relations with the West improved.
8/17
His son Saif al-Islam, who had studied in the UK and was a vocal supporter of neoliberalism, got appointed as a "Young Global Leader" by the World Economic Forum.
Gaddafi did achieve a lot at promoting literacy though, but that was mostly part of a regional development.
9/17
As 2011 approached, situation got unbearable for the working class, especially for young people who didn't have access to patronage networks.
Meanwhile, the IMF praised Libya days before the revolution started for its economic policy.
10/17
But as Gaddafi had crushed the development of a leftist opposition, there were just no organizations that could have guided the movement in a direction.
Instead, there were the tribes. And as the conflict broke out, society atomized into tribal kinships.
12/17
The crisis and civil wars in Libya since then are shaped by tribal rivalries and are a direct result of Gaddafis social policies.
Meanwhile, a Libyan left is pretty much non-existent. In their "Mapping of the Arab Left",
@RLS_NA
didn't even include Libya.
13/17
We also have the Gaddafist formations PFLL and LPNM.
PFLL is led by Saif al-Islam al-Gaddafi, the neoliberal son. LPNM denied that minorities were oppressed under Gaddafi, called for burning all their flags and accused them of working with the French secret service.
16/17
A short overview:
The closest thing to a leftist party is "Harakat Insaf" (30k likes on facebook), a social democratic, progressive and feminist party led by Muhammad al-'Arishiyah. However, it has gone inactive in 2018.

Then, there are the National Front Party and the National Movement Party. Both are ever so slight left of the center, but don't have much of a platform.
The leftist Workers' Voice Party it is mostly just a barely updated page on facebook with only 172 likes.

Yeah maybe don't call yourself a communist when you worship a racist genocidal dictator who died two decades ago.
If that's not enough, Saddam was also fiercely anti-communist and killed dozens of ICP members, including the leadership in 1963.
The resistance of Serê Kaniyê is humbling.
It's not just YPG against the invaders, it's young and old, Kurds, Armenians, Arabs, Assyrians and Circassians, men and women, fighters and civilians - in short The People - risking their lives to defend their city from fascism.

Yes, the Ukraine very much is a democracy. A flawed one, but far, far above the aggressor. Stop using such arguments to justify an unprovoked invasion.
My solidarity goes to the civilians of Palestine and Israel, who suffer and are being killed by Hamas and IDF.
I acknowledge that Palestinians have suffered disproportionally more due to the power imbalance, but yesterday Hamas showed what it will do if it gets the opportunity.

Very telling that just when Turkey is mobilizing at the Syrian border while threatening to invade once more, NATO is putting out a statement in solidarity.
What a disgusting, war crime-endorsing alliance.
Terrible situation for Roma refugees from Ukraine in the Czech Republic.
The difference of how EU countries treat ethnic Ukrainians to how they treat the Roma is deeply problematic:
How some people went from "Stop acting like Putin's going to attack, it's just training"
to "Russia is basically just defending what's theirs + it's not a warcrime because XY in a city 100s of kms away, also what about USA?" in two weeks is frankly driving me mad

That's the issue. You think because a regressive force striving for regional hegemony is hostile to the West and by extension its capital, it must be good.
But that's not Marxist analysis, that's just being a dogmatic tool that hasn't even understood what it supposedly supports.
So it appears this whole disaster was only possible because the majority of the Israeli army was stationed in the West Bank, aiding the settlers in their attempt to colonize it and terrorize the original Palestinian inhabitants.
💥 "My father, Brig Gen (ret) Uzi Ben Yitzchak, asked me to ask why they're not saying the truth: that 26 battalions, almost all the regular IDF, is in the territories. There is almost no army in the south. All this due to a decision of the extreme right-wing government."
And get a load of this.
The thread started with claiming the killed persons are only playing dead, but mid-thread, the narrative was shifted to "Ukraine did it".

How far will these monsters go?
P.S.:
The opener might be a bit misleading. Most leftists don't support Gaddafi of course. There's just a vocal minority of authoritarian leftists that do.
Also, there's one more center-left party I missed: The Libu Party. It focuses on minority rights.
Unsurprisingly - and as every honest person knowing a thing or two about the Caucasus knows predicted - Azerbaijani forces started going after Armenian cultural heritage in Artsakh.
Meanwhile, the apologists speak of "voluntary exodus".
Sadly, the international interest in the Iranian protests seems to be dropping. But they are still going on, despite all the violence and death they had to endure.

It's a surreal situation:
US recognizes the Armenian genocide while at the same time enabling the extermination of the Khaburi Assyrian community by Turkey. These are descendants the genocide survivors from Tur Abdin.
Actions speak louder than words.
Artsakh, like Efrîn, is currently occupied and ethnically cleansed.
In the current geopolitical climate, a return is difficult to imagine.
But one day, these regimes built on ethnic hatred and escalation will collapse, and the people will return to their homes. Don't lose hope!
Bucha was one of the war's hottest frontlines. That means, not all civilians necessarily were killed by Russian forces on purpose.
None of this changes the fact:
Russian forces conciously committed a massacre in Bucha.
