Voted the No. 1 zoo in North America by USA Today and home to 7,000 animals, The Fort Worth Zoo aims to strengthen the bond between humans and the environment.
ANOTHER SURPRISE!🤭 Meet baby boy Korbel, the newest addition to our giraffe herd. Because he was born in the wee hours of Jan. 1, 2024, his name is a nod to the bottle of bubbly, Korbel.
This little big guy is 6ft 3 inches and weighs 165 pounds.
It’s an exciting time to be a 470-pound baby elephant! Travis is 4 months old today and has started trying new foods like grapes, bananas and bread. His teeth are slowly coming in, but he’s sticking to soft foods for now (and mom’s milk).
Fruits and veggies are not yet a regular part of his diet, but Bruno is very interested in Gracie’s meals and has insisted on having what she’s having!

It’s time to meet Travis! The littlest herd member made his public debut today with mom Belle and grandmother Rasha. Now weighing 345 pounds, 1-month-old Travis stuck close to Belle’s side, tiptoed near the water, laid down in a bed of hay and received a dust bath!
Bruno’s teeth are growing in! He has at least eight teeth already. Gorillas have 32 teeth, just like humans do! They develop baby teeth much faster than humans, and they will be replaced by adult teeth. Bruno chews on mom Gracie’s fingers and new food items.

This little guy just hatched & is the 600th Texas horned lizard to hatch since we began our program. Though the horned lizard used to populate the state abundantly, today it is a threatened species. But we’re working to change that.
Only Texas kids go swimming in December! Travis went for a dip in one of our behind-the-scenes pools. (And remember what we said yesterday about those leaves … 😉🍂)

Yesterday we announced our newest arrival, a premature female gorilla baby. In our previous post, we shared that mom Sekani was diagnosed with preeclampsia four to six weeks before her baby was due.
Bruno is on the move! At almost 4 months old, the little guy is moving around all by himself much more frequently. Although Mom may get some relief from his recent independence … she’s never really out of sight 😂
We can’t wait for the days he can keep up with big brother Gus!
Meet Ace! Although this giraffe calf looks little – he is our biggest giraffe calf born to date, weighing a whopping 196 pounds at birth! He is certainly growing nice and strong and is up to 240 pounds, towering more than 6 feet tall.
🚨HISTORY IS MADE🚨
The Zoo is thrilled to announce this monumental conservation success - the hatchings of four critically endangered gharial crocodiles.
At just 10 days old, our baby boy is already picking up sticks and hay with his trunk, investigating toys and venturing away from mom. He’s already quite the independent little guy! 🐘🥹
ANOTHER SURPRISE! 🤭 Meet our first-ever rockhopper penguin chick to hatch in Fort Worth Zoo history!
Darcy was born on Dec. 21 and is already about 11 inches tall. During her first exam, she weighed about 2.65 pounds — just big enough to fit in the palms of your hands.
Security cam footage caught Brazos and Bluebonnet snuggled up and snoozing in the barn when they arrived in the morning 🥰 it won’t be long before Brazos won’t fit here anymore, but something tells us he’ll still try (there’s nothing like a mother’s love, right?).

As we count down to the New Year, let’s look back on the Zoo’s Top 10 moments of 2022. Kicking it off with
#10
: We think this one goes without saying – Brazos’ first time playing with bubbles is one of our favorite moments of the year.
We just can’t get enough of little Darcy! 🥰
A big congratulations to our bird staff on this massive conservation success. Staff has worked for decades to achieve the Zoo’s first-ever hatching of a rockhopper penguin.
A little peek into Jameela’s first few days.
She was born weighing 3 pounds, 1 ounce and consumed about 2.5 ounces of milk in her first bottle … today, she weighs more than 5 pounds and is drinking a bottle three times as full as her first.
Meet baby boy Moja! He was born in October to mom, Saba, and dad, Jabulani. Moja (pronounced mow-jah) means “one” in Swahili, which seemed fitting as he is Saba’s first cub.
Travis’ first swim! Things went … swimmingly 😏 He’s a natural - snorkeling around Mom, bobbing and dunking in the water. The behind-the-scenes pool is shallow for now, but it’ll be no time before he’s in the deep end! We’ll keep you updated on our littlest swimming trunk 🥰🩳🌊
Baby Bruno is 9 months old today! Bruno is thriving and we love watching him grow! He has at least 14 teeth and is currently nursing & trying new foods (usually stolen from mom, which she does not appreciate.) We can’t wait to continue to watch him grow!
Baby’s first check up! 🩺🥼
Moja’s first check up was a success! Our vet team weighed him, listened to his heart and lungs, gave him a physical exam and his first set of vaccines.
Introducing our fuzzy Valentine! 🩷
We are proud to share the historic and emotional story surrounding the birth of our third gorilla baby born four to six weeks early via emergency cesarean by the Zoo’s veterinary team with the assistance of human medical specialists.
Elephant in a tub!
Brazos made quite the splash with his inflatable pool this weekend. His keepers helped keep the cabin fever away as the winter weather passed through with activities like this one!
Arts and crafts in the elephant yard! Brazos coincidentally drew a perfect circle in the sand while playing with a large branch. Could it be that we have another artist in the family? (Grandma Rasha will occasionally paint as a form of enrichment!)
🎥: keeper Christine
Elephants flap their ears for a few different reasons: cooling down, listening and communicating excitement. Our big baby is getting his practice in! Who here can wiggle their ears?

Happy Father’s Day, dads!
Keeper Lindsay caught this special moment of play between Elmo and his first-born Gus. Those low grunts and grumbles are signs of contentment and even laughter!
Dancing & groovin’ this Sunday! 🐘
Here, Bluebonnet is picking up her feet high and fast — which is a great way to keep her legs strong and her joints healthy. This action also helps with balance! Fun & beneficial!
Farewell for now …
We have a bittersweet announcement to share: our surrogacy journey has ended after unsuccessful attempts to introduce Jameela to Winifred (Fred).
We’re babywearing! A milestone perhaps Mom is most excited about (we’re assuming here 😉) – Bruno now has the strength and coordination to hold onto Gracie as she moves around the habitat. He has a free ride and she has both her hands back.
Surprise! This little one was born yesterday and is now bonding with mom in the barn and meeting the rest of the herd. It will be a while before it's on exhibit, but we’ll be sure to tell you when it is. Until then, enjoy this sneak peek of the Zoo’s newest knobby-kneed big baby.
There’s more BABY BOY joy here at the Zoo: we are thrilled to announce the birth of our second-ever western lowland gorilla! The littlest ape was born early Sunday morning, Nov. 6 and is estimated to weigh between 4 and 5 pounds, which is normal for infant gorillas. 🥰🦍
Something strange is happening in Texas … first the Amarillo Zoo, then
@SanAntonioZoo
and now us. We need the citizens of Fort Worth to help us identify this mysterious figure.
At 11 months old, Brazos is big enough to play with bigger enrichment items – like an elephant-sized dumbbell, this 120-pound ball and a 35-pound block (that he can easily pick up with his trunk). Brazos weighed in at 1,180 pounds this week.
ANOTHER SURPRISE! 🤭 Say hello to our newest mandrill baby.
This is the first mandrill born at the Fort Worth Zoo in nearly three decades and only our third in Zoo history! Named Ruby ❤️ the little primate was given the colorful moniker as a nod to mom, Scarlett ❤️
Are you seeing what we’re seeing? Baby Bruno is standing (with help from Mom)! You’ll notice him squirming around a lot more these days, reaching out or crawling on his mom when she’s trying to nap. 😉
📹: keeper Lindsay
Snack time! 🍼🍼
We have a new face here at the Zoo! Meet Charlie, our newest baby longhorn. He has been getting acquainted with his new habitat and can now be seen in the Playbarn!
Surrogacy update!
Staff has continued to work with Gracie on her surrogacy training and temporary introductions to Jameela have been made with Gracie, Bruno and Elmo.
Progress!
#Gorilla
introductions continue here at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Tune in for an update with Dr. Elena Less on the latest troop developments. ❤️
Baby Bruno is mimicking behaviors of mom, Gracie, and other members of the troop. Here he is making a nest to rest in, a behavior Gracie usually does before bedtime! 💤😊🦍
As those temperatures keep dropping, we hope you’re cuddling up and staying warm!
The gorilla habitat gives the Zoo’s troop the option to go outside or stay indoors. We think the sound of the hose drew him indoors to play. Is he bathing, cooling off or a combination of the two? We’re not sure – but those big teeth make us smile! 😁

Soak up allll the snuggles today (or don’t, after all, it’s YOUR day 😉)
Happy Mother’s Day to all of the moms, mamas and mother-figures from all of us at the Fort Worth Zoo 💐
Don’t forget to hydrate! 💦
An elephant can drink anywhere from 25 to 50 gallons of water each day! What about you?!
(Also, do you see what we see? Baby Brazos has tusks! 🥰 Only about 3 inches now, they’ll continue to grow throughout his lifetime.) 📹: keeper Addy
Travis is 1 month old today and already able to participate in Bubble Week! This little guy is becoming more independent, already using his trunk to pick things up (and blow bubbles after a recent rainstorm) and growing every day (now weighing 315 pounds)!
📹: keeper Peter
More flamingo chick content because HOW CUTE! 🦩 If you zoom in, you’ll notice a bump on the end of the chick’s beak. This is called an egg-tooth — it helps the little bird crack it’s shell when it’s ready to hatch 🥹 and will fall off after a few days.
Born two weeks ago, on Feb. 23, our big boy now has a name … meet Travis! Following the Zoo’s Texas-theme tradition, our fifth-born calf is named after William B. Travis, the heroic commander of the Texans who died at the Battle of the Alamo.
📸: keeper Addy
These boys know how to cool off on a hot day like today! 😎 Gus and Bukavu heard the hose from inside and wandered over to play with the water. Who can blame them? 🔥💦
📹: keeper Angie
Swim lessons! Brazos practices in a shallow pool where he can touch the bottom and mom is nearby. In the main habitat, Bluebonnet lets Brazos explore the waterline, but he hasn’t taken the plunge and Bluebonnet has been observed pulling him back as well. It’ll happen soon enough!
