MLS playoffs have been going on for three weeks and there are still 8 teams left. What an awful set up. Too many teams in postseason. Too many games in the first round. International games in between. Almost no exposure. MLS needs to fix.
Say what you will about the logo fiasco, but the Fire's offseason marketing, digital content and off-field moves have been substantial and impressive since that misstep.

The MLS is pulling it's first teams out of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup moving forward.
@HiMyNameisSeton
explained what that means and why it's a bad thing for the game of soccer in America.
Significant

off-field news. The Fire have agreed to a multi-year deal with WGN-TV to televise matches starting this season. They will also continue to stream on ESPN+.
The Fire can keep dismissing coaches but at some point Mansueto HAS to find a GM/Sporting Director that understands how to build a team in MLS. Nothing changes until that happens.
#cf97
Fire currently have 26 players under contract with Gimenez, Beric, and Aliseda taking the 3 DP spots. Should be a few more signings this week.

Messi can't be considered the GOAT until he's able to beat the Fire on a tackle football ravaged, spray-painted, sandy turf in a meaningless October match. Looks like we'll find out this fall.
Sad day in US Soccer and MLS because the league hasn’t figured out how to monetize USOC. Instead they have opted for the quick buck of Leagues Cup. Ignoring history and long-time fan’s preference is a slippery slope.
The Fire’s season ended almost 9 days ago and not a word from
#cf97
leadership on the direction of the club. This sort of head-in-the-sand approach just continues to alienate the fans that remain.
#makenolittleplans
It’s not the name. It’s not the location of the stadium. This is why
#cf97
have failed to resonate in Chicago. Points per game over the last decade in MLS.....
Some
#cf97
news: Fire have signed midfielder Alvaro Medran to a TAM deal. Two years plus options for two more. 25-year old center mid, product of Real Madrid system.
#cf97
have signed 14-year old Academy goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina to a homegrown contract. He is the youngest HGP in MLS history. Signed through 2022 with an option for 2023.
On a level of his own 👏🇨🇭
Xherdan Shaqiri is the only player to have scored in each of the last three EUROs and each of the last three FIFA World Cups 🤯
Fire news not done today. They have announced the signing of 19-year old Argentine winger Ignacio Aliseda as a Young Designated Player. Four year deal.
#cf97
Clearly - Bridgeview, the logo, the name, and the uniforms were the problems with interest and attendance. Just move to Soldier Field, slap on an FC and maybe a crown, then throw some Chicago colors in there. Problem solved.
The wait is over for
#cf97
. Nicolás Gaitán signing is official. Free transfer but $50k GAM paid to Seattle for discovery rights. Under contract through 2019 with an option for 2020. TAM and DTAM used as well.
Mansueto should be furious with himself for the unwarranted extensions he handed out this winter.
#cf97
are a third of the way through the season and this is the product. Inexcusable, really.
#cf97
roadmap for ‘23: Dismiss Heitz, no more search firms, talk to Garth Lagerwey, give him whatever he wants if he’s looking to move, don’t let Garber talk you out of it this time. Find a way to lose Shaqiri and Gimenez. Hire a real academy director. Don’t wait until January.
Peter Nowak may be the greatest Fire player ever, but if there were a “Mr. Fire” title to be handed it out, it would probably go to Frank Klopas.
#cf97
Xherdan Shaqiri: “I want to return to Europe.”
Chicago Fire also would want that outcome, to open the DP spot and have a clean break. We’ll see this summer if it happens.
Fire unbeaten in 3 games since Shaqiri left for Euros.
Incredible that in a little over 24 hours,
#cf97
will play their home/season opening game and there is still no word on a local broadcast partner for the match, This sort of negligence is the reason why soccer is seen as minor league in a major market.
The Fire have announced plans to "develop an all-new visual identity, including a primary crest." They are now asking supporters to participate in the effort.

Speaking of the Fire…it has now been 14 days since their season ended. There has been ZERO communication by leadership to their fan base regarding the future and direction of the club.
#cf97
The new logo isn't aesthetically terrible, it just has no reasonable connection to the team/city/community. It smacks of change for the sake of it. That said, I think fans will tolerate it with a winner on the pitch. If business as usual continues, this could be disastrous.
The Fire have signed Mauricio Pineda to a homegrown deal. One year plus options for three more. His signing is the equivalent of adding a high first round pick.
#cf97
Man, the new logo is so much better than the crown abomination. Imagine the good will that could have been established if they had only listened to their fans in the first place.
Ezra Hendrickson becomes the latest ex-Fire coach. He can be second-guessed this season but make no mistake, this changes nothing until Heitz/Pelzer are also held accountable.
#cf97
There is some activity in the Harlem end today. Supporters wielding a “football without fans is nothing” banner and three black coffins with “tradition”, “honor” and “passion” labeled on each.
#cf97
How bad has
#cf97
futility been? Since 2010, despite format changes, more teams qualifying, expansion, etc - they have made postseason twice and have zero wins. Only recent expansion clubs compare in number of playoff appearances. Monumental lack of accomplishment given parity.
Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering. Suffering leads to watching
#cf97
lose at home to the worst team in the East. Brutal.
Sign Torres. Sign Casillas. Trade Nikolic to Euro team for $$$. Use $$$ in part to sign Iniesta. Add TAM defender and wide player. Boom.
#cf97
win 2010 World Cup.

Today is my last official day as a sports writer/editor. I am staying with the Daily Herald, but starting Monday I’ll split time between covering DuPage County courts and producing the Business Ledger. 1/
@DHBizLedger
The Fire are in dire need of points especially at home, so they decided to let Shaqiri leave early because he may not have been fully focused on the team with Euros ahead. That would be the fourth highest paid player in the league and the team "captain".
#cf97
Two-time MLS Coach of the Year Jim Curtin is still without a new contract. Curtin's current deal with the Philadelphia Union expires at the end of 2023.
Talks are ongoing between the Union and Curtin, but nothing is close.
Curtin has been head coach of the club since 2014.
The Fire have acquired 20 year-old Venezuelan left back Miguel Angel Navarro from Deportivo La Guaira. He is signed for three years plus options for two more.
#cf97
The Fire have announced Arlo White and Tyler Terens as pbp voices on WGN-TV. They will be joined by former MLS goalkeeper Tony Meola on color commentary. White will call
#cf97
matches in between Premier League & Olympics NBC assignments.
#cffc
Fire could have hired Alex Ferguson and it wouldn’t make a difference if Heitz/Pelzer continue to botch DP signings and fumble basic MLS roster building.
#cf97
Eventually the Fire were going to spend their way into being competitive. This appears to be a solid add at 9. If they can convince Acosta now and shed some dead weight, they should legitimately be competitive for postseason.
#cf97
Finishing 8th or 9th should have no bearing on Heitz/Pelzer extensions. They’ve had 4 seasons, 2 head coaches, 6 DPs, big budgets, and they’re closer to 13-15 than they are to 1-3. This would be a sure way to kill the 62k buzz they’ve managed to finally create. Amazing.
#cf97
Out of town the last week and just caught the Fire match. Team looks competent and tough to play against. Turns out if you if hire a decent coach and sign good players, you can win some matches. Who knew?
#cf97
The Fire have announced the signing of midfielder Luka Stojanovic. 26 yo attacker via transfer from Serbia's FK Cukaricki. Deal is for two seasons plus an option for one more.
#cf97
The secondary transfer window opens one week from today.....unless it opens a month later for
#cf97
and they just decided not to tell anybody until after the deadline arrives.
Which reminds me,
#cf97
season ended 22 days ago and supporters still have not heard one public word from leadership about the direction and future of the club.
This
#cf97
team should actually compete for a playoff spot….not just hope they compete for a playoff spot. They’re even playing in red and white. Now to move Torres….
Continuing to play Schweinsteiger at CB is such an indictment of
#cf97
failure in the transfer window. Only coming away with del Grecco, who clearly isn’t good enough is a big whiff.
The Fire have signed 16-year old Academy midfielder Brian Gutierrez to a Homegrown Player contract. Deal is for 4 years with an option for 1 more.
