In English we say “Dear Mr./Ms./Mrs./Dr.” because we’re conditioned to think of people in terms of gender or status.
In Irish we say “A chara” because interactions, even with strangers, are rooted in the assumption of friendship.

Dreadful situation on the
@Luas
. A passenger who had paid his €2 fare on a bus and didn’t know he had to revalidate when changing to the Luas (fare already included in the €2) was issued a fine, had his card confiscated, and ticket-inspectors refused to even give their details
As a citizen of the Irish state, I am appalled that my government is refusing to recognise the significance of Irish republicans, seeking reunification, winning an election in a place designed to discriminate against Irish identity and nationhood. Other world leaders have done so
Delighted to help out going door to door with the
#BilingualPackaging
campaign in Portobello today! A great reception on the doors, especially from people with no Gaeilge who see this as a way to make it easier to learn! Let’s get Irish in our shops ☘️

Can we please appreciate that the city of Trier in Germany has gone to the trouble of making their traffic light men into their most famous son, Karl Marx, complete with wee communist manifesto?
Waterford’s Gaeltacht is a small rural community of <2000 people. Against all odds over 1/4 still speak Irish daily there outside school.
Dumping unaffordable houses on them as holiday homes for well-off English monoglots is not an answer to the housing crisis, it’s linguicide.
@Luas
Hi Sabrina, this is not made clear at stops, and could have been resolved in this case by letting the passenger tag on at the next stop. Why is that not standard practice? It seems like a scam to get as many fines as you can by having a rule you don’t tell people about
Gaeilge so in vogue these days:
-> gets banned in Germany at protests
-> gets a dedicated Russian propaganda website
-> gets nominated at the Oscars
-> gets used in ads for Italian fashion house miu-miu
sad times for the “Irish is a dead language” brigade
An Irish-language Russian propaganda website called Pravda IE has been set up as part of a wider network of pro-Kremlin pages uncovered by French investigators.

Hi
@rtenews
I noticed you mention groups from “both the far-right and the far left” were involved in the obscene protests today on Grafton Street - what left or “far-left” groups are you referring to? Clearly the NP and others were involved on the far-right.
Leo Varadkar: 'I think we need to have another go at housing really, and seeing what we can do. Because while our plans are working, they're not working fast enough and that's very obvious to me'
Not sure which is funnier, overseas media not knowing how the system works or local media acting as if it’s of no significance to see Sinn Féin become the largest party in what was originally an openly sectarian statelet designed to keep Catholics/Nationalists in their place
Pádraig Ó Caoimh fought the War of Independence & led the GAA for decades, fighting for a pitch in every parish, doubling clubs & bringing the All Ireland Final to New York. He oversaw Croke Park hosting the Tailteann Games & Eucharistic Congress
All to be erased for Supervalu?
All I’m taking from this scandal is that RTÉ being run by a person called Dee Forbes is as on the nose as if TG4 were run by a guy called Conn Na Mara.
#D4bz
The decent thing to do would have been to just let him revalidate at the next stop. He clearly wasn’t cheating, he paid the full fare. The Luas staff told him all this is explained at the stops - the info that you must revalidate is simply is not provided! Fix this
@TFIupdates
@Luas
Hi Catherine, you’re just repeating what Sabrina said, taking no account of what I’m saying, and you didn’t even send a link. This is woeful communication.
@Luas
It’s the passenger’s responsibility to look up terms and conditions on a website before travelling? That’s frankly ridiculous. So I assume you have no intention of providing that info at stops and allowing people who have paid their fare to simply tap on at the next stop?
2022 was the year when the last of Britain’s Penal Laws imposed in Ireland were finally repealed.
The Administration of Justice (Language) Act (Ireland) remained in place in the north from 1737 to 2022, forbidding use of Irish in the courts.
Irish will now have legal status.
Dear
@IrishRail
, your Galway-Dublin service is a disgrace. No options to book in advance online, forced to pay €26 FOR NO SEAT. Station waiting room in Athenry closed, forced to sit in the freezing cold. Enough people left standing in corridors to fill a whole extra carriage.
Micheál Martin choosing today to accuse Sinn Féin of weaponising the Irish language rather than having any actual answer to Mary Lou’s question about language rights speaks volumes about how engrained Eoghan Harris’ worldview is in FF and how little FF cares about Irish speakers
“It is wrong that Israel continues to enjoy a special partnership with the European Union while it tramples on the human rights of Palestinians and openly and repeatedly violates international law”
Strong speech from Sinn Féin leader to the EU Parliament President 👏🇮🇪🇵🇸
I expect venom from Micheál Martin about Sinn Féin, but saying we’re “infecting” young people has to be one of the most disgusting phrases he could possibly use.
You can criticise without resorting to dehumanising your opponents and saying they’re a disease.
We deserve better.

Ciarán Cuffe has given the best example of partitionism ever when arguing over war in Ukraine:

Fine Gael considering moving Leo to D4 surely suggests a real fear that he might not hold his seat in Dublin West or couldn’t take a seat in Dublin South Central. Quite damning, no?
If Ireland had a house for every time Fine Gael blamed Sinn Féin for the lack of housing caused by 12 years of Fine Gael Government, we would probably not have a housing crisis.
Sinn Féin’s Aisling Burke the only one of the 18 Galway City Councillor to maintain a tradition started by her Sinn Féin predecessors in 2014 of not wearing the archaic ceremonial robes that cost the taxpayer €800 each for councillors to prance about in. Bravo Aisling 👏 🇮🇪
Leo: Sinn Féin is scary, we’re more like Mandela
Mandela engaged in violent rebellion & actively supported Sinn Féin.
Micheál: Sinn Féin is scary, we’re “Wolfe Tone Nationalists”
Wolfe Tone’s form of nationalism was violent republican rebellion & choosing death over surrender.
Just listened to the rest of Leo’s contribution where he lied about Sinn Féin on the news.
He also said we should follow the example of Nelson Mandela.
Mandela explicitly supported Sinn Féin.
Gerry Adams was asked to join the Guard of Honour at his funeral.

This Government has been a disaster. Some would have you point the finger at people fleeing war and poverty to make a new life here. The real culprits are the Ministers who consistently fail our most vulnerable.
RTÉ have questions to answer about having a Fianna Fáil TD’s sister moderate the last big debate, where the Fianna Fáil candidate was clearly favoured, allowed interrupt & not asked about his voting record.
Bravo to Lynn Boylan for calling out the double-standard & imbalance.

The benefits of colonisation outweighed the harms and if we truly desire Irish Unity we must show maturity by cheering all things English as if they were our own, and scrapping divisive Irish culture, sports, language, songs and identity - my article in today’s Irish Indotimes
One thing I’ll say about any Sinn Féin commemoration of Republicans like Wolfe Tone is that they always focus on the vision of the Republic for which they fought and how it can still be achieved.
Micheál Martin makes commemorations all about making snide comments at Sinn Féin.
Imagine the reaction if a Sinn Féin leader had used a trip to the US to snub key employers and mock a former head of state due to visit Ireland soon.
As Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar is becoming a diplomatic liability.
Such gaffes could undermine our foreign relations and vital FDI.

I remember all the media spin suggesting Sinn Féin were wrong to call no confidence in Helen McEntee after the unprecedented far-right-led riots in Dublin in November.
Not even a year later we have far-right-led riots in Dublin once more.
Sinn Féin were right. McEntee must go.
@MarkAgitprop
It actually reads as a nonsense “kyashefirreh” given that the Ogham script is for letters in the Gaelic alphabet which are pronounced different to English words in the Latin alphabet. Sos cogaidh is the Irish for ceasefire.
Galway City Council reps at the Oireachtas Committee for Gaeilge and the Gaeltacht saying they can’t be ambitious in terms of Irish language policy because the city is multicultural.
This is insulting, appalling and false.
@ciarancannon
It says it all that TDs in the current government would rather focus on paint thrown at a building than on the genocide being perpetrated without consequence.
And when it comes to vandalism, were was your outrage when heritage buildings like O’Rahilly’s House were demolished?
Most people in the South have no friends or relations in Northern Ireland, have not crossed the Border in the past five years, have not taken an overnight trip there, writes Pat Leahy as latest Irish Times/ARINS research released
@ArinsProject
Very sad to see that after centuries of anti-Gaelic persecution and Highland Clearances, the suggestion of implementing the most basic linguistic & cultural conservation policies in isolated rural Gaelic communities is being mischaracterised as racist. Colonialism is racist.
Gonna go out on a limb and say if you can do this in Welsh in Dublin you can probably also serve the Irish speaking community here without much hassle

Successive Irish governments banned or shunned such art for decades after the State was founded precisely to stop such reflection.

It’s a sad situation where debates on our Anglophone TV & radio rarely get beyond pandering to the fringe “our language is annoying, let’s scrap it” folk, and never get around to seriously analysing how to revive our language and how to save our Gaeltacht, which most folk want ☘️

In fairness, in the Leaving Cert case for example, Martin starts answers saying things like “Sinn Féin never sent us any proposals” - it’s only right for Mary Lou to interject and say Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire sent proposals to the Education Minister.
This week, the leader of the SDLP has criticised nationalists for believing in the “fantasyland” of national unity, and has attacked Derry’s sitting female MLAs for posing in a photo as “Derry Girls” because they’re not Derry City enough to meet his standards.

Could Leo Varadkar explain why Coveney confirmed to the Indo yesterday that there will be “no specific sanctions directly targeting the flow of Russian capital through the IFSC”?
Sinn Féin has demanded action on this for over a year.

Worth a listen.
This is the leadership we need.
Sinéad Ennis (Sinn Féin) alone got a larger vote than People Before Profit, Aontú or the PUP got across the entire six counties, as many seats as the TUV, and her vote amounts to 56.6 times the vote received by the Tories in this Assembly Election.

Of the 7 Labour TDs today,
5 were Ministers in the Austerity Government (2011-2016).
Their current leader was Deputy Leader of the Seanad ramming that agenda into law.
They would do so again if given the chance.

I’ve found & continue to find Sinn Féin one of the most welcoming places to be LGBT+.
Twitter isn’t great for sorting out issues - I’ve been attacked both for not condemning a tweet I didn’t find homophobic & for doing Leo’s bidding saying homophobia against anyone’s bad. (1/3)
To all Sinn Féin supporters.
If you are racist, Sinn Féin does not want you.

Sinn Féin is a party dedicated to eradicating racist supremacy in all forms.
That includes talking about opponents.

How is this allowed. Not only is the Gaeltacht Minister
@jackfchambers
refusing to allow Irish be the working language of the new Advisory Committee to plan the provision of Irish language services, now he’s suggesting members might need special allowance to speak Irish at it 😡
The President of the European Commission has no authority to make up foreign policy on behalf of the EU.
She and Várhelyi have undermined the careful balance of powers between institutions and member states enshrined in the Treaties.
Their positions are no longer tenable.
DUP: boycotts and therefore collapses N/S Ministerial meetings
UUP: pretends it never made commitment to irish language rights
SF: calls leaders of all parties to meet & deliver on commitments
SDLP: “SF and DUP are engaged in student politics”
🥴
I know the approach I prefer
I actually can’t get over the EU Commission, without any evidence, deciding the thing to blame for violence on our streets was… the Irish language.
Straight out of the British Empire playbook.
Needless, gratuitous, baseless smearing of a colonised minority. We can’t accept it
The Labour Party, standing for nothing else, now aims to be the political wing of Irish Independent columnists.
No big surprise to see anti-Gaeilge policy from a TD who once branded Irish speakers “the Taliban” and refused to apologise.
Best ignored.

clarify why she is intent on maintaining EU support for Israel’s genocide by keeping her party leader in the top job?
You’ve moved on from voting for migrants to drown to endorsing pro-genocide EU leadership.
What parties are collectively responsible for the financial crash and ensuing austerity that gutted public services and created housing, health & cost of living crises?
Clue: They’ve forged an alliance on Dublin City Council to increase austerity-era tax and keep Sinn Féin out.
Utter madness. Sinn Féin tried to end geoblocking and ensure all island access to public service broadcasting during debate on the Online Safety & Media Regulation Bill, but the government was not interested. You can’t have a shared Ireland with partitioned media.
