How expensive? ๐ธ
To match the security of Ethereum, a dApp with 15 middleware service integrations would require roughly $440B of staked capital and $40B of annual security costs across those integrations - here is an exhibit from our report:

7 / 15
EigenLayer calls their shared security model โrestakingโ โ validators restake their ETH to secure new protocols (more in our report).
No more $440B stake required for Web3 app parity. ๐
4 / 15
Why such a big difference? ๐คทโโ๏ธ
In Web3, all dApps need to be decentralized which means building their own validator sets, and thatโs expensive.
8 / 15
In exchange, protocols pay rewards to ETH validators that choose to restake.
Since ETH validators now have to put up less stake, they will require less APY from each new protocol.
No more $40B in annual security costs to additional trust networks for Web3 app parity. ๐

First, EigenDA fully decouples DA from consensus -- it won't be responsible for transaction ordering, a job better left to sequencers in a modular worldview. ๐งฉ
This allows nodes to attest to data blobs in parallel, rather than serializing them, cutting out consensus lags.
Shared security is unleashing the next wave of innovation in Web3 apps. Thatโs why we invested in
@EigenLayer
. ๐ฅ
For more on restaking, see our previous thread: (6/23)
Do you want Web3 apps that surpass the utility of Web2 apps? ๐คค
โ ๏ธ Youโll need validators to stake $440B and protocols to pay $40B annually for security.
๐ก Restaking with
@eigenlayer
solves this problem and makes holding ETH much more compelling.
Here's a ๐งต โฆ
2/10
Like other DA layers (
@CelestiaOrg
&
@AvailProject
), EigenDA uses erasure coding for efficient storage & will scale horizontally w/ the number of nodes in the network.
But 2 optimizations set EigenDA apart from other DA options, allowing it to target 1GB/s throughput... โก๏ธ
When discussing
@VitalikButerin
's post around restaking risks, it's important to remember that there are two tier options for protocols building on
@eigenlayer
: permissioned and permissionless (as
@sreeramkannan
tweeted ). (1/4)
4/10
Second, EigenDA sends data chunks directly to nodes via a "Disperser" instead of using a P2P network to transmit data among the nodes.
By cutting out latency from a gossip protocol, this novel design enables faster data commitment times compared to other DA systems.
EigenLayer's end goal is to be enshrined in Ethereum. ๐คฏ
If this happens, we could see Ethereum become more decentralized since EigenLayer introduces a way to explicitly value decentralization (services choose their validators and can favor/reward decentralization).
2/4
Since validating for hundreds of AVSs requires significant compute power, shared security may contribute to validator centralization.
๐ก EigenDA helps mitigate this issue. AVSs should separate data from execution to keep compute load on validators as light as possible.
4/4
4/4
Final thought: itโs ok in our book to call projects like USDe stables. It's an umbrella term that covers several different types of coins -- why would they all need to have the same risk profile? ๐ค
EigenLayer significantly reduces the cost of security and simplifies validator network โprovisioningโ. This cost reduction and ease of provisioning is akin to what AWS did for Web2 in โ06 ().
For builders, this changes the game. ๐ทโ๏ธ (7/23)
gm.
I'm excited to share my Middleware Thesis.
Why middleware will be the unexpected star of modular design, why vertical integration matters, and how it'll actually scale crypto to the proverbial next 1B consumers ๐
๐งต (1/21)
Expect to see stratification of validators based on distinct needs of AVSs (services built on EigenLayer):
- those that require lightweight computation and want decentralization
- those that require heavyweight computation and want a smaller, more centralized validator set
3/4
The above design choices position
@alignedlayer
to be the cheapest and most robust verification layer for offchain compute and will further modularize the ZK stack to maximize flexibility for builders.
Proud to support
@fede_intern
,
@thisisrj
, and the entire aligned team. ๐ซก๐ฉโจ
5/10
The disperser model has its risks, though. It's susceptible to censorship / non-responsiveness. EigenDA suggests rollups maintain a second disperser as a fallback.
We hope a better solution emerges -- maybe a decentralized marketplace of dispersers (built as an AVS)? ๐ค
We expect a messaging layer to impact Web3 much like Java did the Internet.
Javaโs novel cross-platform capability allowed devs to create web apps w/o worrying about the underlying OS, greatly simplifying development. The number of new Java packages grew exponentially:
(19/23)
Web3 will rebuild the Internet to shift value accrual away from tech oligarchs into the hands of users. โ
Rebuilding these apps unlocks massive economic potential, which we think could approach the value of physical economies. (2/23)
This is a huge market. The winner of the messaging layer wars could have a token that rivals ETH as money. ๐ฐ
^ Thatโs for all you Ludwig von Mises fans out there (). (20/23)
CeFi meets DeFi to stream payments in crypto to builders of Web3 and inclusive financial infrastructure. We are proud to invest in and support
@sam_thapaliya
and his team at
@Zebec_HQ
- another great project building on
@solana
, a fast finality chain.
6/10
A couple other design choices we love...
โค๏ธ DA throughput can be reserved in advance, so rollups and their users can rest easy knowing they won't be wrecked by DA costs during high congestion.
The average Web3 app today integrates w/ 5x fewer services than a Web2 SaaS app ().
There just arenโt enough middleware services in Web3. As a result, devs have to bootstrap capabilities that would normally be abstracted away by a third-party. ๐ฎโ๐จ (5/23)
3 / 15
All apps rely on other apps to deliver utility.๐ก A typical Web2 SaaS app integrates with 15 other services.
According to Riad Wahby of
@cubistdev
, the average Web3 app only integrates with 3 to 5 - this number should probably be closer to 20.
AI & other services will trigger a flood of data to chains. ๐
Thatโs why weโre investing in infrastructure that supports middleware, like MPC (check out
@MPCH_Labs
) & ZK, which will enable secure & efficient data processing. Expect their widespread use across services. (15/23)
Lastly, the messaging layer โ โil capo di tutti capiโ of middleware services. ๐ซก
A messaging layer is an abstraction layer that hides the complexity of building on top of various services. As more middleware pops up, this layer will be critical for app interoperability. (18/23)
7/ We can't wait to see how
@cubistdev
&
@eigenlayer
design these interfaces and hope to see collaboration across the EigenLayer community for defining anti-slashing policies.
What do you think will be the next innovation to make building and validating on EigenLayer easier? ๐ค
But these technologies are still nascent. Today most middleware services need to develop their own ZK libraries or MPC algorithms.
We see a future where ZK and MPC are provided as a service or through their own marketplaces. (17/23)
Congrats to the
@FedML_AI
team on their seed round! ๐๐ผ
Their decentralized compute network promises to create a large economy and marketplace for ML compute, data, and open-source models. Weโre honored to support them as they realize that vision. ๐๐ปโโ๏ธ
Who will benefit most? Expect to see a boom in new middleware services first. ๐ฅ
Companies like
@Chainlink
are well positioned here, but itโs also possible they're proving the market for countless new projects just as Craigslist did a decade ago (). (8/23)
But Ethereum is far from reaching the value of physical economies.
This wonโt happen until the utility of Web3 apps reaches that of Web2 apps. How do we get there? ๐คท (4/23)
Weโre especially excited about ZK and how it enables off-chain compute. ๐ช
As ZK tech continues to improve and ML models need less and less computational power (e.g. Metaโs LLaMa), these technologies will converge to allow more ML to take place on decentralized networks. (16/23)
2
Othentic first started building a different project as an AVS on EigenLayer before they realized deploying an AVS was a heavy lift.
There was no abstraction layer for this yet, so many of the components they were building would have to be reimplemented by other AVSs.
First up, the identity space. ๐
Today users have almost no control over their identity data, which is owned and sold by centralized entities.
In Web3, users own and control their identities and can use trusted attestors to selectively share verifiable credentials. (11/23)
2/ The appchain thesis has caught fire for two main reasons.
First, L1s command a monetary premium. They trade at a 1000x multiple, much higher than other blockchains, as
@stratosxyz
pointed out in their recent article: .
10/ Next, Avalanche launched subnets.
Subnets give developers solid control over decentralization and security, but the underlying security from staked AVAX is not yet competitive with the ~$60B of staked ETH on Ethereum.
Excellent podcast w/
@SuccintJT
. Big takeaway: unlike other SNARKS, Lasso/Jolt exhibits economies of scale. Lookups only require a one-time pre-processing cost which is amortized the more a given lookup is repeated.
๐ก Breaking circuits into bigger chunks = faster proving times.

We'll end with something we're still chewing on. ๐ฑ๐
EigenDA may allow rollups to pay for DA in their native currency, reducing the "exchange rate risk" for rollups and opening the door to use inflation to float DA costs...
So when do the killer apps that everyoneโs looking for get here? ๐คค Our prediction is 24 mos.
Middleware services building on EigenLayer will reach big milestones over the next 12 mos. This in turn will attract new devs, who will need another 12 mos to build these apps. (22/23)
4/ Imagine a validator digging through dozens of audits to decide which AVSs they can trust enough. ๐ซ
That overhead could push validators to offload AVS selection to a larger entity. Not only is this centralizing, but it also creates a big security/reputation hurdle for AVSs.
10/10

2/ EigenLayer validators are responsible for running multiple different consensus clients, one for each AVS they're validating.
Running a consensus client takes some trust -- a bug in the code could cause validators to commit a slashable offense, e.g. double signing. ๐ธ
6/ Thatโs where shared security comes in -- it significantly lowers the yield required to attract stakers. Let's see why...
As an L1, you need the holder of another asset (e.g. ETH) to sell, so they can buy and stake your token instead. Incentivizing this requires a high yield.
3/ It's uncommon that Ethereum consensus clients have bugs because theyโre well established/audited pieces of software.
AVSs are a different story. We're talking about much smaller/newer projects, many of which won't have protocol experts. There will be bugs. ๐
The recent boom in AI is the perfect opportunity to attract new users to Web3.
These two technologies have a natural synergy: Web3 can shape the still-forming space of AI to keep ownership rights and value capture in the hands of users, not centralized companies. ๐ค (14/23)
7/10
โค๏ธ Configurable erasure coding ratios -- rollups can make the tradeoff between DA costs and security. E.g. a video streaming platform could opt for cheaper DA (less redundancy in the erasure coding) if it's willing to rely on a higher threshold of honest nodes.
