The only other Labor councillor, Sabrin Farooqui, appears to not have been at the meeting
You can critique elements of the Budget without being this hyperbolic. It is simultaneously true that in totality this budget is definitely the most progressive for a decade, and that the government should provide more welfare support.

On the latest inflation data you will hear a lot about the headline figure of 4%, but much less on the fact rent inflation is up almost double at 7.4%. Rents are driving inflation and that hurts everyone. Labor could stop this by freezing and capping rents, but they refuse.
I loathe the insinuations of some of the inner city left that the working class multicultural suburbs of this country are uneducated/uninformed/racist because it’s that attitude that’s alienating some people from basic progressivism and towards conservatives.
Imagine the amount of Papuans you could feed with that money. We’ve seen with the landslide recently how much support their economy needs in areas like infrastructure too.
What a waste!

1. Flat taxes are cringe
2. Something tells me taxing younger working age Australians to pay for the aged care of Boomers is not going to go down well.
Something I try to keep in mind re ALP in govt is it took the Swedish SocDems 30 years of uninterrupted government to transform their country into the modern welfare state it is now.
As long as we are constantly trending towards a positive direction then I’ll have some faith.
NSW: Cumberland City Council has voted to "rid" its libraries of books that show same-sex parents
The ban passed with a 6-5 vote
Current council composition:

🟩 Our Local Community: 4
🟦 Independent Liberal: 2
🟥 The Independents: 1
I reject the idea that Kew and North Sydney, some of the wealthiest parts of the country, are inherently less racist than Dandenong or Parramatta, communities that are disadvantaged and multicultural because they voted no.
The Greens political party HATES Family fun.
We always knew they were too woke for trains…too woke for puffing billy.
What will they cancel next? Luna Park? The CBD? Disappointing.
Just found out that the Vic gov insures the Puffing Billy.
Not saying they shouldn’t necessarily… but they can’t cover a private coal-fired tourist train and let small live music venues go under - can they?

Very silly idea that 4 year terms is less democratic than 3 years, it’s a very marginal difference and if you don’t want a government to be in campaigning mode a majority of the time it is necessary.
The senate being 8 years is absolutely an issue…
No surprise to see that one thing the major parties appear to be able to agree on is lowering the (already rock-bottom) level of democratic accountability they face.
It’s very appropriate that the last Labor member of Parliament to cross the floor was white nationalist Labor MP Graeme Campbell.
Fatima is following in Graeme’s footsteps because voting for the destruction of Israel is a racist position that many white nationalists support.
Rumours have emerged the Albanese government may consider changes to negative gearing, prompting shadow immigration minister Dan Tehan to call on the Prime Minister to be "loud and clear" with the public about his intentions.
This Budget delivers savings in the order of $1b from the reduction of spending on consultants and contractors.
Together with the $3b in savings delivered in the 2022-23 October Budget, that brings the total savings on contractors and consultants to $4 billion.
The Victorian government has the power to stop supermarket price gouging.
The Greens bill shows how it can be done.
If they refuse to support this – it’s Labor saying they would rather Victorians be pushed into poverty than take on the profiteering supermarkets.
@JulianHillMP
Doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor every child should be able to go to child care or see a doctor. Anything less wouldn’t be universal after all.
Attacking universal coverage over these niche cases is only a cover to attack the whole system.
I'm unironically kinda ashamed to share a party with this freak. Someone expel him NOW!
And probably suspend the councillors that abstained or something this is a monumental failure from Labor.

Independent senator David Pocock rightfully savaging the $300 energy rebate for everyone on the ABC.
Why, he asks, would people like him on six figures need this, when there are 3 million Australians living in poverty?
I don’t think America is prepared for the very real possibility that:
• We won’t know for days who won the presidency as we wait on vote drops from Clark/Maricopa/Milwaukee Counties
• We won’t know for weeks who won the House bc of how glacially slow CA is at counting votes
I’m Pro Palestine, I think the Australian Government should have recognised it years ago.
But Payman should not be allowed back into the caucus. We should not have members that monetarily support homophobic organisations. That should be clear to any progressive.
Been doing some thinking and I don't think a lot of ppl here realise the level of how fucked countries like Italy are compared to Australia long term.
Massive debt and deficits, no growth, rapidly ageing population. It really is a disaster no matter the party in power there.

You guys have literally been calling him Airbus Albo, now he decides to not go to a meeting you complain that he ISN'T going??
He's literally doing what you've asked him to.
Unless he has very, very good reasons, it will be a dereliction of duty for Anthony Albanese not to attend NATO.
National security is the first responsibility of a government & NATO brings together the first partners Australia would call on in a time of need.
Every day I become more and more thankful that I live in Australia. We have our problems but the discourse and issues in other developed countries atm are insane.

Funny how the media always finds a way to criticise the state govt in objectively good scenarios.
They’re tying themselves in knots to say Labor is bad because housing is simultaneously not getting more expensive and is too expensive!
Melbourne’s property market has stalled as the nation’s other capitals soar, as its median home value could be eclipsed by nearly every other major hub at this rate by 2025 >
Journos are so stupid all they see from the boundary changes are 'Labor loses seat so bad for Labor' lmao.
I think broadly this is a good redistribution for us, shores up marginals, we can take the hit in bruce and chisholm and makes taking deakin and menzies easier.
Vic greens kinda being unhinged on the vic housing reforms.
This is big stuff, either make real suggestions (not a rent freeze lmao) or get out of the way.
Hey guys is it seriously hard to keep in mind that the last thing the govt wants right now is another rate increase, and it’s a delicate balancing act to have that not happen?
Spruiking a $9.3bn surplus during what is probably the worst economic times for people in this country in a generation?
Imagine the number of homes that could be built with that, the amount of HECS that could be wiped.
Gov should not post a profit when everyone is struggling.

If these were the requirements, you would see construction of this housing stop overnight. It is not feasible for this to be done at a profit (or even just revenue neutral).
Why do you want to stop new homes from being built?
So the Greens will support Labor’s plan if they agree to make 100% of the apartments affordable by:
- Imposing a rent cap of 2% every 2 years
- Define “affordable” as 25% of household income or
70% of market rate, whichever is lower
Increase the minimum lease period to 5 years

A lesson for the ALP imo. Same thing is happening in WA.
Thats why Andrews has been stable here in Vic. He’s done ambitious reform and been rewarded for it.
“Nothing for mortgage holders”
…except for a tax cut, energy subsidy, more primary care clinics, a freeze on medicine costs and better parental leave.
Absolutely delusional
No new money for housing, nothing for mortgage holders, no new money for DV support services. Nothing to stop corporate price gouging. HECS debts will keep going up. But there’s room for $50B for fossil fuel subsidies and $174B in tax handouts that make the housing crisis worse.
I think working class people being paid a living wage is good actually.
This is the exact reason why so many care economy workers move to aus to work here. It’s integral to our health care system being successful.
If an ALP caucus member donates to a zionist group, the LARP left would scream murder.
But donating to a homophobic organisation?
The standard isn’t being applied equally
I’m Pro Palestine, I think the Australian Government should have recognised it years ago.

If you genuinely think the alp is just as bad as the coalition then I think you’ve completely lost the plot.
An aged care worker who got a 15% pay rise that wouldn’t have happened under the libs would literally laugh at you.
But dw they’re both the same 🤔
This is so fucking stupid. If you aren’t willing to fight the Libs on tax cuts for people earning over 180k then you aren’t in the right job.
I thought we were here to fight tories?

And this is why the ALP is the most successful Labour/Labor party in the world.
Honestly only a few centre left parties are more successful imo (swedish soc dems, psoe in spain for eg).
Keir Starmer reshaped the Labour coalition in a way that gave him the most amount of seats possible for his vote share.
If you want to form government and enact change, that’s what you need to do.
Exactly this.
Labour winning this scale of majority with a relatively modest vote share is a sign of success, not of failure.
We can have a conversation about voting reform, but to underplay that achievement is both bitter and ridiculous
I know there are MPs/people in the party that would rather go into opposition than form Govt with the Greens.
If that line of thought prevails in the event our seat tally is deep in minority govt territory next election, then the Albanese Govt would have been a failure.
Compared to the membership and trade unions, the PLP before this saga was already deeply out of step with other elements of the party on Palestine.
I think with this expulsion they’ve clearly overextended, to expel a caucus member for voting in line with the platform…
