Delighted to get a large project confirmed this week by the German Ministry for Education & Research. It will finance my research & that of 3 colleagues for 4 yrs, including some linked secondary projects. "ReDICo: Researching Digital Interculturality Co-operatively" is born.
The EU forced me to study in Germany, calling this dastardly programm Erasmus after a citizen of nowhere cosmopolitan. They even gave me some money to do this. As a result I am now married in German EU-land, & even have EU-ian bilingual slave children.

Was in Lidl in Leipzig today. They had both British and Irish cheddar cheese on the shelves. Turn the packages over & you can see they're the same cheese, from Cookstown in county Tyrone. Northern Irish identities in action, dominating British & Irish branding?
Disappointing that Sarah Mcinerney hasn't gotten the 10-12 am radio slot. Seemed a natural and wonderfully incisive interviewer. Great radio voice and a Galway accent too. What more could you want?
The 10 year-old, who has had great difficulty in learning to read because of epilepsy & dyslexia, has just written 3 short poems. A bit of positive news.
Burning bonfires of flags & posters is not 'culture'. "Kill all Taigs" is incitement to genocide, which is an extreme hate crime under international law.
Me (reading the title of a children's storybook): "Angelina and the Princess".
5 year-old (annoyed): " Princesses, princesses, princesses. I don't like princesses. Or queens. Or kings."
Does anyone know any anarchist children's books, in which the mice build a co-operative?
Irish Twitter is very confrontational at the moment, dividing everyone into IRA Army Council-obeying Sinners, Fascist/Tory Blue shirts and corrupt power-hungry FFers. This maybe isn't the site for nuance, but there is surely a good deal in between?
So, uppity Paddies & nasty bullying Krauts are stopping Britain from unicorning with the rest of the world as a sort of Singaporean neo-Empire, high on Dunkirk spirit? That's basically the Brexiteer narrative at the moment, right?
I see that Brexiteers are fighting WW 2 again. A version in which Ireland was especially treacherous, ignoring the circa 40,000 Irish men in the British Army & G2's close links with British Intelligence.
Also liking Germans is a crime now. (I'm very guilty. Even made my own.)
Fungie the dolphin, the holder of a double first in history from Oxford, is Ireland's most celebrated military historian. He is also a very dedicated hobby swimmer.

spoke with Professor Richard Dawkins who believes children with Down Syndrome can potentially increase the amount of suffering in the world.

This is SF's Dominic Cummings' moment. It's the politically powerful breaking the rules they themselves have made & expect ordinary folk to follow. Equality is meant to be a central tenet of republicanism. But it seems that, even in death, some are more equal than others.
This is how Angela Merkel explained the effect of a higher

Just back in Germany. Potential war, and Germany's position in relation to this, seems to be dominating the papers. In Ireland it was all about the pubs opening again.
So, my wife was let go twice for having a baby. Once for each of our children. And today she also became one of the Corona Virus unemployed statistics.
Going to Ireland in 10 days & the kids are very excited. I asked them what they looking forward to most. Seeing their grandparents, aunties, uncles & cousins maybe?
The 8 year-old: “The suasages. And the white pudding. And Nappa“.
(Nappa is my sister's dog.)
I am the same. My contract is up in September. It is deeply stressful for myself & my family. I've had a rolling contract for 10 years. This will be the last. In this time I've also published 2 books, more than 20 academic articles & loads of review essays.

I feel embarrassed & ashamed to admit that I'm still on a temporary contract (up in July). I've had two temp lecturing contracts & two post-docs. Causes me & my family huge stress & insecurity. Irish academics pls share your

Got the second vaccine today. The doctor went out of his way to give me a plaster with a shamrock on it (!) & wanted to talk about Ireland! This, quite common & maybe unearned (?), sense of instant interest & likeability is amazing at times. And maybe a bit embarassing too.
Ireland has never really been neutral & depends on its neighbours for defence, while being lightyears away from having the capacity to join a military alliance.
I don't understand the emotionality of the supposed 'neutralty-NATO' dichotomy.
36 degrees yesterday, 37 degrees today. Attic apartment. I'm already at the "dreaming of showers & 15 degrees in Ireland" stage of summer. This usually happens much later.
The summer flights home to Ireland, for the family to see my parents and brothers and sisters, are now officially cancelled.
Feck. It will be 2 years now, at least, before we can grace the bogs and the lanes of east county Galway and south county Roscommon again.
Yes, the real problem is Johnson is a fun-loving, freedom-loving libertine & Merkel is a Lutheran. From East Germany. East Germans famously don't know what 'freedom' means.
I understand the new British Covid-19 strain is more transmissible between children than the older strain. So there is a big question around whether schools should re-open in January?
Most of us have a large residue of internalised & unthinking racism, learned in childhood from various sources. We need to recognise that. & engage with it critically. Anyone who sang "Eeny meany miny mo" as a child in the 1980s knows what I mean.
These pupils came to Germany in 2015 from war-torn Syria. They're now getting their Abitur (Leaving Cert - it wasn't cancelled), can speak perfect German & many seem to want to study medicine.
New book on the terrible murder by the IRA of German Grundig manager in Belfast Thomas Niedermayer. He was kidnapped in 1973, probably also by one of his employees, but his body wasn't found till 1980. His wife & 2 daughters later all committed suicide.
Philosopher Jürgen Habermas, 'retired' & 90 years of age, has just published a 1,700 page history of (western) philosophy. Sure, I suppose, what else would he be doing?
"He said academics all over the world "should weep for the destruction of the concept of the university that has occurred, which has led to little less than the degradation of learning"."

There's now an "Irland Krimi" on German tv, with a mixture of German & Irish actors & set in Galway, which is a bit full on with the old gothic-Catholic Irish imagery.
Sad to see Tim & Máiréad Robinson's home at the pier in Roundstone still empty. They had bequeathed the house and Tim's archive to the University of Galway, but UG refused the house.
Now, it looks like it's falling into dilapidation and their generosity is unfulfilled.
My brother scored 3 goals in a match last night! He's 49 & still playing Junior F hurling for the absolute love of it. Now that's what sport is about. Not driving around & celebrating because your favoured collection of multimillionaires have finally won something.
Sinn Féin TD Matt Carthy defends the crowds that turned out in west Belfast for Bobby Storey's funeral.
“I think in this instance you let people grieve and don’t turn it into political point scoring.”
"The failure by British sociology (...) to take seriously the experiences of the Irish as predominantly white migrants, meant that recent white, European migrants in Britain (..) have tended to be regarded as an entirely new and unprecedented phenomenon."
I was trying to explain to the two girls that my secondary school only had boys & no girls, & that this was not unusual in Ireland in the 1990s.
They found it hilarious & unbelievable.

Disconcerting to see the far-right marching in Dublin - recently in Berlin & London too - against an imaginary dictatorship while in Belarus actual brave & intelligent people are marching against an actual dictatorship.
The Irish-German 9 year-old tells me in English class this week they practised saying "how do you do?" & "I'm fine".
Do people really say "how do you do?"
Definitely. I have also met a lot of German academics who get their reliable Brexit news chiefly from RTE & Irish Times. That Irish sources frame the Brexit-interested discussion at European-level is a substantial achievement for the journalists involved.
Presumably the Irish public being fully informed on Brexit by a world-class journalist like
@tconnellyRTE
- who manages to boil down arcane detail so even a thick like me can understand it, while never losing sight of complexity or nuance - is all just a Blueshirt plot.

Here’s what I think: The United States of America doesn’t need any advice on how to run a democracy from a country we defeated in two world wars, crushed, rebuilt and returned to polite society. But thanks for asking! Cc
@ARDWashington
The fault of wider society?
Wider society was pervaded by a thoughtless & internalised authoritarian anti-female ideology. But this was initiated, perpetrated & instutionalised by church & state.
We didn't all party.

One positive of the Covid era, prob the only positive element, is the inclusivity of online events. Not many of us could have gone to Oxford to hear these lectures. This is something that needs to be retained. All future events should be hybrid, with inclusive online elements.

"Alternatives against the Right". Rolf Sotscheck on the Irish election in the Taz. The German commentary has been very well-informed & nuanced. Also makes the point that the election was largely devoid of hatred against immigrants; unusual now in Europe.
Those "Irish summer, Staycation, it rains at times, they said" Tweets are tiresome. There's a pandemic. Thousands have died. You are privileged to be on holidays.
Thinking about my First Communion. If I remember rightly there was no real party, but we went in the afternoon to Birr Castle and walked around. I remember being very excited. Not a hint of a bouncy castle anyway.

What a difference a year makes. This time last year the now 8 year-old was having constant epileptic absence seizures & no medication was working. 12 months later she has a medication that's working, hasn't had a seizure since April & is now in an understanding & patient school.
Daniel O'Connell died on this day in 1847. In Nazi Germany in 1943 his story was used by a largely unknown writer Annemarie von Auerswald in an anti-British propaganda novel. He is portrayed as a good man whose dedication to pacifism results in British cruelty and famine.
