I wish I could say I'm surprised by the lack of sympathy--and outright anger--directed at Brittney Griner. She committed a minor crime and is in a Russian penal colony. But because she's not White or male or straight, lots of people don't care or are happy. Sad.

@GottliebShow Doug--'Beyond idiotic?' Gee, if only I was smart enough to KNOW when someone was that wrong. And YOU are beyond naive if you think race isn't often a factor in sports and the world. So easy for white guys to say, 'there's no racism in the world because I say so.' Be better.

Not surprised but disappointed by the vitriol directed at me for saying Mike Tomlin's a great coach. A lot of it is spoiled Steeler fans, some of it is out-and-out racism (YUP, sorry) and some is just the meanness of twitter. Sad world sometimes.

Usually when NCAA gets called out on stupid, hypocritical decision, it reverses itself. Not in Braxton Beverly case. On the same day UNC got off scot-free on 18 years of academic fraud (admitted to by school) Beverly denied playing this yr. because he WENT TO CLASS briefly at OSU

Virginia did the right thing cancelling Saturday's football game. Wouldn't have been fair to ask the players to somehow focus on football so soon. It is also a way to honor the victims in a way that goes beyond an empty moment of silence.

The NIT marrying itself to the NET to invite teams like Florida (16-16) and Wash State (17-16) and leave out a 25 win Fordham team is just foolish. A sold out Rose Hill would have been great for ESPN and Fordham has more NIT tradition than anybody. Just awful.

If you're upset Tiger Woods isn't going to Tour Championship blame the tour. Major win barely counts more in pts system than regular tour event. If pts were doubled--which they should be at minimum, Woods is in easily. So's British Open champ Shane Lowry. Nice going tour.

There were 11 regular season champions from one-bid conferences who didn't win conference tournament. None got an at-large bid. By rule, all got into the NIT and ALL 11 were sent to play on the road, including Toledo (27-7) and Bradley (25-8). Remember, the NIT is run by the NCAA

Just now say Jay Williams comments about the UCLA thieves, saying they should only be suspended a couple of games because, 'we're talking about kids.' Kids? My 7-year-old knows stealing's wrong and has known it for a while. Seriously, Jay?

Jim Caldwell was fired in Detroit after going 36-28; WORST record 7-9; two playoff and 9-7 in 2017. Matt Patricia is now 9-24-1--as many wins as Caldwell had in 16 games his last season in 34 games. How's that move working out?

I fully expected an outpouring of right wing anger at my column today. I got some but got a LOT more response from people supporting and understanding my position on guns and the NCAA. Thank you all.

No anecdote today. My mother died on Mother's Day 27 years ago and I'm just not up for it--especially after dealing with some of the hate-filled, right-wing racist tweets of the last two days. If you think I'm any of the names I was called, please take your anger someplace else.

Happy Mother's Day. My mom died on Mother's Day 29 years ago. I still think of her everyday and, at times, pick up the phone to call her. Today is always bittersweet for me but I celebrate the mothers of my three children and her memory. If you've still got your mom, cherish her.

Very happy for Danny Hurley. He never had it easy as a player or as a coach. Built Wagner. Built Rhode Island. And now he's built a national champion.

Even the ESPN pundits are stunned by BYU being #14 . And now Gary Barta is--of course--telling people sadly how their schedule hurt them. How about WATCHING them play? Ridiculous...

Hard to believe it has been 26 years since I wrote "A Civil War." it gets a nice little sales spike this time every year. Not sure I've ever had a book that sold more because of word-of-mouth. I'm grateful...

Today's bad news: Notre Dame has apparently 'let go,' John Heisler--associate AD who has only been at school for FORTY ONE years! John is as good as it gets; should have been AD and now the heinous Jack Swarbrick is apparently trying to save a few bucks by dumping him. Ludicrous.

Bob Knight turns 77 today. My birthday wish for him is that he finds a way to put aside his anger before it's too late and return to Indiana so he can be honored the way he deserves to be. The only person he's hurting is himself.

I'm in my house now, not the press box in Philly for Army-Navy. Been sick (fever, chills) for two days and my wife ORDERED me not to go. Makes me so sad but, truth is, I'm not sure I could have handled the day and it would have been selfish to expose people to whatever I've got.
