My review of the autobiography of the man who was once declared the British Empire’s public enemy number 1 has been published. His work unveils the violence of the British imperialist war in Malaya-a historical fact that falls victim to institutionally enforced silencing/erasure.
On Malaysia Day,
@FadiahNadwa
writes about the 2003 autobiography of Chin Peng, former head of the Communist Party of Malaya, who led anti-colonial resistance against both Japan & Britain before spending decades in exile in Thailand, where he died in 2013.
A friend who lives in Kuantan just told me his neighbour came over this evening to borrow some rice. Most people in his kampung have lost their jobs and don’t have any money.
Let that sink in.
Anjing itu kurus kelabu
Lidah terjelir nafas termengah-mengah
Menjaga istana tuannya yang gemuk
Patuh setia, menerima & menyerah
Anjing itu, sering menyalak-nyalak selalunya mendayu-dayu
Bukan kerana ada musuh
Tetapi minta makanan, perutnya lapar
— Usman Awang, Anjing Itu (1951)

’s face in the casket felt surreal - he was alive this morning and now he’s gone. The ruling class coerced him into the miseries of poverty and punished him for trying to survive. A reminder that the lives of people like Nagen are not up for debate.
Mother of Sivabalan Subramaniam grieving outside IPD Gombak as her son who was brought into the police station earlier today was announced dead by the police officer.
Women who are part of the ruling class are capable of oppression just like men who are part of the same class.
Women like Rohana Rozhan, Che Minah Sayang, Zeti Akhtar hoard the wealth that belongs to the poor (men/women/non-binary people/children) & benefit from their positions.
Thanks everyone for your solidarity. Following the investigation on me at Bukit Aman this afternoon, the police now have access to my Twitter account as I was compelled to surrender access under the Communications & Multimedia Act.

Orang Melayu perlu sedar apa yang sedang berlaku di Palestin *bukan* isu agama tetapi isu penjajahan/imperialisme. Jangan berikan ruang buat orang/organisasi seperti ISMA/Islamis jumud yang tidak segan silu mengabsahkan fahaman fasisme/Hitler utk mengangkat ketuanan Melayu.

Men: We can't find women who can speak about this issue.
Me: Have you asked them?
Men: No
“The poor will be richer during this pandemic.”
“Women have to wear lotsa makeup while serving their husbands and children at home.”
“The frontliners are all Malays!”
We need to stop hierarchising oppression and start acknowledging that oppression takes many forms. Muhyiddin, Mahathir, Anwar, Ku Li, KJ, Najib, the monarchs - they are all produced by the same system. The system *is* the problem.
I got a teaching award today. I cried in the kitchen just now thinking about my students’ generous and moving feedback that made this possible. Teaching and being in community with my students has been a soul-enriching experience and I couldn’t be more grateful.
1/Genocidaires/genocide apologists/liberals actively erase the historical fact that Israel is a murderous settler colonial state created in 1948. The survival of this ethnostate is predicated on ongoing violence against the Palestinians. This barbarity has been going on for 75yrs.
The discourse on the monarchy reminds me of this article written three years ago. The amount of harassment and death threats it attracted was unbelievable. You can read it here:
Wrote my thoughts on the disturbing picture of Anwar Ibrahim bending down, kissing the hand of the Sultan of Johor which emerged on the internet post-GE14--->>Don't Kiss the Hand that Beats You
1/ Hujah yg menentang kemasukan org bukan Melayu ke UiTM kerana 1)kedudukan istimewa Melayu 2)Melayu dinafikan peluang pendidikan - menunjukkan bagaimana rasisme & kapitalisme berkait rapat. Tanpa rasisme & kapitalisme, *semua bangsa* adalah saksama/berhak mendapat pendidikan.
I had the privilege of meeting Hersri Setiawan, who was arrested, detained, & tortured during the US-backed anti-communist massacres in Indonesia in the 60s. Pak Hersri served as secretary general of the Institute of People’s Culture’s central Java branch (Lekra) in the late 50s.
Capitalists suggesting that the poor accept being in debt for 60 years to have an affordable house is illustrative of how inhumanity is intrinsic to capitalism.
"We need more women in this new government."
This kind of feminism should be blasted into oblivion. Getting racist/fascist women to run the racist/fascist machine will never dismantle racism/fascism.
In our dark times, we need critical feminism more than ever.
Kawan2 peguam saya sedang mendokumentasi kes2 begini. Kalau ada tahu kes2 begini boleh DM saya.
Terlalu ramai antara kita yg anti-intelektual. Apa yg boleh diingatkan: jadilah seperti nenek moyang radikal kita spt Dr Burhanuddin, Shamsiah Fakeh, Boestamam yg melawan utk merdeka berlandaskan ilmu; tidak takut mendepani isme2 seperti komunisme, feminisme, kapitalisme dll.
It’s important to be reminded that the institutionalisation of Islam, which has erased cultural/religious fluidity/syncretism deeply embedded in Nusantara/Southeast Asia, is inherently colonial.
It has been weaponised by UMNO since independence to maintain power.
At Umno AGM, Zahid vows party will amend Constitution to empower Shariah law
He cited the recent cases of the civil court nullifying Selangor law criminalising "unnatural sex", & reversing the ban over the use of "Allah" by Bumiputera Christians.
On 15 June 1979, Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced that any Vietnamese refugees entering Malaysian waters would be shot on sight. He said “If they try sinking their boats, they will not be rescued, they will drown.”
This is the man who continues to be glorified.
In the meantime, we should demand that his wealth be distributed to those who are struggling to survive this pandemic.
It’s worth reminding that leader of Malaya’s Youth Movement (API) Ahmad Boestamam warned us about people like him in the 1946 Political Testament of API.

“Migrants contribute to our society”.
We need to stop perpetuating this harmful “good migrant” narrative that implies that migrants are obligated to contribute to society.
Oppressed communities should not have to prove their worthiness/economic value to be treated with dignity.
Selagi kita menjunjung “Derhaka Sultan/Raja”, selagi itulah kita akan diperdaya sistem penguasa & konco2nya yg tamak menjarah kekayaan tanah air milik rakyatnya.
You are complicit.
While Gaza is massacred, the Royal Malaysian Navy is training alongside US and israel in the biannual RIMPAC exercise in June.
The Malaysian government signed a 80 million USD contract with Lockheed and Boeing, who are profiting from genocide in Gaza
Liberals perpetually putting politicians like KJ & Azalina on a pedestal (as if they are separate from the structures that engender Malay supremacy) is testament to their opposition to the urgent need to dismantle racism and build antiracist politics.

Religious racialisation (PAS is one of its various manifestations), which has long colonial roots, can only be dismantled through radical organising. And that cannot be achieved without critical analysis of the kind of democracy that only benefits the ruling class.
This pandemic has made it abundantly clear that celebrity clerics, celebrities, and property development CEOs are not friends of the working class/marhaen/poor.
“Maybe it’s true that royalty shouldn’t bother with lowly people like us.”
This has got to be the most repulsive thing I’ve seen today.
Steve Biko was right when he said “The most potent weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed.”
It’s important to note that it was the British who cemented the notion of Chinese people/non-Malays as perpetual outsiders. This notion erased what Rahman Embong has described as “a culture of pluralist acceptance of the other”, wc was intrinsic to the Malay world.
The British:
It’s ironic that this was shared on IWD.
It reminds me of how Usman Awang was grappling with his conscience while he was serving on the colonial police force in the late 40s where he was tasked with capturing communist guerillas and protecting British plantations.
The ruling class destroys the environment and displaces the indigenous people *not* because “they don’t believe in science.”
They do that because they profit off of the destruction of the environment and the displacement of indigenous people. This *is* capitalism.

Race in both Malaysia and Singapore was founded on the political economy of colonialism - how colonial capitalism depended on the construction of race to create division - a necessary condition for maintaining subjugation and exploitation.
Usman Awang throwing shade at Tunku Abdul Rahman:
“Apakah para intelek memilih keperluan sebuah klinik gigi di Pulau Langkawi atau perarakan menanam dua batang gigi yang diikuti upacara penuh kebesaran menanam dua pokok kelapa?”
Great that Malaysians are paying attention to what’s going on in the US. Things we can do:
1) address antiblack racism within our communities (call out ppl who still use the N-word, landlords who refuse to rent houses to Black ppl)
2) Donate to groups serving Black communities

“Decolonisation” has been deliberately defanged by careerist academics to obstruct actual liberation which necessitates the dismantling of all systems of oppression by any means necessary.
A THREAD/ So Ku Li has proposed that the concept of Malay citizenship be revived. It’s noteworthy that this concept is not new-it was embodied in the People’s Constitutional Proposals for Malaya drafted by PUTERA-AMCJA in 1947. The proposals were outright rejected by the British.
Dear journalists, Adelina Sao was a domestic worker. A domestic worker whose labour had dignity. Domestic worker. Pekerja domestik. Use these words. Normalize these words. She was dehumanized when she was alive. Let’s stop dehumanizing her in death.

Usman Awang’s poem Anjing Itu comes to mind:
Anjing itu kurus kelabu
Lidah terjelir nafas termengah2
Menjaga istana tuannya yg gemuk
Patuh setia, menerima dan menyerah
Anjing itu, sering menyalak2 selalunya mendayu2
Bukan kerana ada musuh tetapi minta makanan, perutnya lapar
Resharing this article I wrote 5 years ago about Anwar Ibrahim (before he became prime minister) and the Malay rulers. I was investigated under the Sedition Act for writing it.

We have never welcomed illegal immigrants PATI to our country. We must tightened further the border control & do the needful. We must also ensure the legal immigrants PADi take all precautionary measures & have good personal hygiene. Employers must address their cramped housing.
Usman Awang quit the colonial police force because he refused to be an agent of state violence/oppression.
Syed Saddiq pretending that police brutality is due to a few bad apples, not a systemic issue:
Homeless people and other oppressed communities deserve to be vaccinated.
We need to retire the “they are useful/not useful/contribute/don’t contribute to society” argument - they are not a commodity; they are human beings who deserve to be treated with dignity.
We have to keep reminding ourselves that the purveyor of the miserable conditions we are in is the ruling class, not the undocumented migrants who are doubly oppressed because of their precarity.
Pause? This is what happens when your politics are fuelled by nothing but rhetoric/performativity.
Assata Shakur's words come to mind: “Nobody in the world, nobody in history, has ever gotten their freedom by appealing to the moral sense of the people who were oppressing them.”
Peringatan buat kita semua: Jangan berhujah dgn mereka yg jelas membelakangkan perkara paling asas: kemanusiaan.
Tugas kita adalah utk sama-sama mendedahkan kezaliman jiwa mereka; memperjelaskan kedudukan sesuatu isu utk kita terus tekad mendidik jiwa utk memanusiakan manusia.
“Why are we stuck with the lesser of two evils?”
This question can be answered by thinking about how people/organisations that scream that they want change actively enable and sanitise (birthday wishes, interviews, compromises) the evils of the ruling class.
Usman Awang tentang kemiskinan:
"Sungguh menyedihkan bahawa dalam sebuah negara yang kaya-raya hasil buminya, rakyatnya kaya dengan kemiskinan. Sungguh menyedihkan bahawa kawasan luar bandar masih mundur, sekolah-sekolah serba kekurangan, murid-murid serba ketiadaan".
Malaysia's Queen deactivates her Instagram account yet again, following more backlash from public, among others for not knowing where the country's major Covid-19 quarantine centre is & for sending cupcakes to frontliners
It's disheartening to see people from formerly colonised nations make fun of their people for "incorrectly" pronouncing certain English words. This shows how deeply ingrained the perception that the coloniser's language is superior/a marker of intelligence/civilisation.
So many of us grew up being told fair skin was beautiful.
Malcolm X once asked a very important question: “Who taught you to hate the color or your skin?”
My girl tak terlalu cerah. Dia baru 6 tahun tapi dia pernah cakap dia brown. Brown tak cantik. White cantik.
It breaks my heart to see my little girl feeling that way.
