I love riding transit. I choose to be car-free. I believe in the promise of what it can do for people and the planet.
Today it took 90min to get from Capitol Hill St to Angle Lake. And 75min back.
This system needs to love its riders back.
I support this 1000%. Jaywalking laws were invented by the auto industry to shift blame for traffic violence away from drivers and onto walkers. This kind of petty totalitarianism is anti-urbanist and creates fertile soil for racism.
1 out of 7 planes leaving

is headed for Portland or Vancouver. Just an insane amount of carbon emissions and air pollution.
It’s past time for better, faster train service.
"Commuting time has emerged as the single strongest factor in the odds of escaping poverty. The longer an average commute in a given county, the worse the chances of low-income families there moving up the ladder."
#TransitEquityDay
I know it's A Whole Thing, but we really need to figure out how to do flexible headways for high capacity events. This train is max capacity, passing people up, and the next one doesn't come for 15 mins. Reward good transportation decisions with good transportation service.
Yesterday I took the bus 1 block from the
@SoundTransit
UDistrict Station to 1 block from the University St Station. It took 43 mintes.
2 weeks from today that trip will take 10 minutes.
Fast, frequent, and reliable transit gives our time - and thus our lives- back to us.
Your daily reminder that in order to reach WA’s adopted climate goals we need to reduce VMT by 50% and then electrify the remaining 95% of trips. That’s only possibly if
#waleg
funds irresistibly good levels of transit service for every community in this state.
Just waited 25min for a bus that never came. Luckily another rider walked by and let me know that actually, the 60 had been rerouted. Zero signage at the stop, extremely unclear info on the apps. Now I’m out $20 for an Uber. We deserve better than this.
TFW when the bus comes 4 minutes early and a trip to the doctor's office goes from being $1.50 for one youth fare to $35 for an Uber. We need to fund fast, reliable, and frequent mobility in order to accomplish affordability.
I ride public transit and I vote.
If you do too, rt.
Transit riders should be one of the most powerful constituencies in WA, but too often our needs are sidelined or outright ignored. Let's build power by building our visibility. Political power in

Once again I implore local media to acknowledge that the N/S option for
@soundtransit
means eliminating Midtown Station. Midtown will have 15K+ daily riders, the 3rd highest in WSBLE.
This is not a footnote - it's a catastrophe for hospital and office workers and residents.
I want to thank Seattle voters for a record-breaking win for transit. This is huge for people who count on transit, and people who want a viable planet and an accessible economy. Transit is the future.
#YesForTransit
I'm car-free and have been riding transit throughout the pandemic. There were many times that the light rail stations were completely empty, it was eerie and sad. Seeing the stations overflowing with people joyriding today was deeply moving. We're going to be okay.
10:25pm on the
@KingCountyMetro
Route 2 and every seat is taken, SRO. It’s not just “peak time” service that’s flourishing.
The future of transit relies on delivering great service for people’s lives, not just their commutes.
I shoveled three blocks of sidewalk today and learned a few things. 1) its way harder than I remembered 2) it makes you very popular with the neighbors and 3) there is no feasible way the govt could possibly handle this job alone. Hope to see more folks pitching in for safety!
Snacks are mentioned several times in this article. The climate crisis is never mentioned. Transportation is the single largest contributor to GHG emissions. Our survival on this planet is not a game or an afterthought.
You'll be able to fly from Boeing Field to Portland starting in April, starting at $49 one-way. Does that beat cars, trains, buses and flying out of Sea-Tac Airport? We broke down the pros and cons of each.

Pro-climate leaders are relying entirely on electrification to meet their transportation climate goals while driving up VMT by sticking with old bad projects and not doing near enough to electrify to the extent needed period, much less to make up for increasing VMT.
100s of orgs and people from every corner of WA and in every sector of life came together to say
@voteno976

The fight continues.

I-976 would've ripped transit service away from low-income seniors in rural WA who rely on it as their only means of transportation to get to the food bank.
Today is a victory for people who wish to live in a decent society.
The Washington State Supreme Court ruled that tax goblin Tim Eyman's I-976 measure, which passed with 53% of the vote last year, is unconstitutional. The court said the measure violated the single-subject rule and misled voters.

The true hero here is

who was brave enough to look him straight in the eye and call him out for the harm he is causing millions of people across WA. I'm honored to stand with her and the people she represents.
It's a weird time. A lot of things that had been 2nd nature, like riding transit, feel new and scary. But the science is clear that transit is safe, the agencies are prepared, and the systems are returning to wholeness.
Transit is still the future.
There is no evidence that mass transit poses a risk of coronavirus outbreaks, and ignoring this harms our ability to recover as a region. Alex Hudson (

Third Ave underperforms. Transit is not the cause.
Riders are the only people bringing life to what would otherwise be a dead street created by zoning for unsustainably huge retail & blocks of blank walls.
Transit solves problems, not creates them.
Straight up shocking that in a 10 min conversation about “what’s at stake” there was ZERO mention of the elimination of Midtown Station, which will serve 15,500 daily riders - primarily downtown residents and hospital workers.
We have a stake.
I want to thank
@SeattleCouncil
for their work today to bring an additional $11M into transit every year. The result is tens of thousands (potentially up to 200K/year) of transit service hours that weren't there this morning. For riders, that's huge.

Can we all give a standing ovation to the folks running social media for

“After a record-high year of injuries, lawmakers propose modest adjustment to rules of the road in attempt to increase safety and save lives.”
With limited data on harm to pedestrians but plenty of intuition about driver behavior, lawmakers are weighing a rollback of what has come to feel like a right.
Lawmakers across every level of government need to advance transportation budgets that invest in true alternatives to single occupancy vehicle trips. And they need to do it now.
One of these buildings is high-end apts. The other is 200+ units for people making 60%AMI and 100+ units of permanently supportive housing for homeless seniors.

This last-minute idea means canceling the Midtown Station.
Midtown is the 3rd highest ridership station in the entire WSBLE - serving residents, hospital & office workers, and connecting Rapid Ride G.
Eliminating it is a multi-generational transit catastrophe in the making.
A proposed light-rail station site under Fourth Avenue South is finally gaining popularity. But officials also want to look at moving it north to Pioneer Square.

@UrbanistOrg
: Seattle's dithering on the Center City Connector streetcar may cost the city $7.3 million in grants that are set to be returned without a local match in this year's budget.
If I was a ST decision-maker focused on mitigating agency risk and preventing expensive system-wide project delays, I would simply not support a last-minute idea with unclear engineering feasibility in clear violation of voter intent.
@SoundTransit
Those of us who voted for ST3 did not vote to break the spine of the system and build redundant stations in Pioneer Square and blocks from the current Stadium Station while adding 10-minute transfers for many people. This plan is not what voters approved.
Thank you bus drivers for taking the wheel and keeping me - and millions of other transit riders - moving all these years. You make everything possible and are deeply appreciated. Life is better when we let the experts do the driving. 🥰🚎💕

Shout out to

for being our sleigh ride to visit family in Pierce County today! Appreciate all the bus drivers working this holiday to keep our region moving and connected. 🎄🚍🥰
There are ~250,000 jobs in downtown Seattle and there are ~35,000 parking spots.
It is literally not physically possible for there to be a downtown recovery that does not intentionally include and promote transit usage. That's just math.
Think physical police presence stops drivers from blocking the box and putting the most vulnerable road users in danger? Looks like nope.
Camera enforcement supports our basic civil right to access safe streets. We'll be back next year!
#DontBlocktheBox
Let's start with the facts:
Scientific studies performed in the US and across the world have repeatedly shown that mass transit poses no significant risk to spreading coronavirus.
King County Metro Transit is planning for a ridership rebound as vaccinations increase and companies talk of bringing workers back to the office. But some pre-pandemic transit users say they aren't in a hurry to get back on the bus.
Has anyone cracked the trip planning code for how to get a solid transit + bike route?
Google sometimes lets you set “mixed modes” but I find it doesn’t really work well.
Before the virus, 7million people in the US were 3 months behind or more on their car payments. Auto-dependency is a financial burden that does - and will continue to - hold us back.
My 100 y/o apt is sweltering, every hotel room in Seattle is sold out, my office has no AC, my mobility is limited to walk/transit, and I'm terrified to leave my cat at home alone today. It's not even 9am and this climate crisis is driving me to the brink of 🤯
I know a bad deal when I see one - this is a real stinker. We cannot afford the devastating impacts this would have to safe multimodal infrastructure, the environment, and the economy. I'm a hell no.
Stay tuned for the campaign roll-out, and how you can help!

Seattle is No. 1 for drop in drive alone commuting: "These numbers suggest that people will choose transit if it’s more convenient than driving. No region has invested more in transit than the Seattle metro area."
"Accordingly, it is unconstitutional."
Beautiful words for people who believe in good transit, safe infrastructure, and the ability for local communities to choose their own fates.

Finally, you can no longer be fined in California for "jaywalking", a derogatory term based on a slur that the auto industry made up in the 1920s-30s to shame pedestrians for using the public streets. 100 years late is better than never.
I start at
@TranspoChoices
when the air is so polluted that breathing is hazardous, AND when 3rd Ave extends its bus-only hours. These two things exemplify WHY we need more and better transit, and the HOW we will do so. I’m thrilled to be part of the WHO!
🚨🚨Bad Headline Alert🚨🚨
Riders aren't "abandoning transit," they are staying closer to home because we are in a global pandemic and need to social distance and limit trips to, you know, save lives.
People in their 20s should focus on three goals: Pay bills on time; shovel money into retirement accounts; and avoid automotive extravagance. Here's how to get started.

I'm hearing and seeing way too much emphasis on the electrification/automation of cars as the only solution to our mobility future and climate crisis in the mainstream media. That's simply NOT going to cut it.
