One year ago today, an explosive supercell formed along a stationary WF/lake breeze draped through Chicagoland. The sup reached echo tops over 66 kft which is very rare for the Midwest. This supercell spared Chicago from a tornado disaster, only producing 2 EF-Os. #ilwx

Interesting thing to note here: Each of the top 3 years on this list featured a prolific spring Midwest tornado outbreak. 1965 with the Palm Sunday outbreak, 1967 with 4/21, and 2023 with March 31st. Odd coincidence or climatological connection? Something to look into more!

Eyeballing a potential chase op on Monday, the 16th. There is disagreement between the Euro and GFS, but the Euro has been very consistent on barely sufficient moisture return into West IL. Hodographs look favorable for supercell potential as well. Lots to watch with this one

The Peoria area has dodged two bullets in rapid succession this spring. Once on March 31st where a supercell failed to produce a tornado, and again on April 4th where the supercell became elevated just before heading into the city limits. Incredible luck #ilwx
