This is a subtweet, but to 100% clear: “original sin” is a Christian idea. It started with Paul and was solidified by Augustine. Bluntly, to Judaism, the whole concept is a perversion of Torah.

When I was in college, I took a piece of matzah over to the pizza station and asked if I could have some sauce and cheese to make a matzah pizza, fully intending to take it over to microwave. The cook offered to run it through the pizza oven for me so it would get crispy on top.

Some Jews also don't say "Adonai" outside of prayer, because that word has functionally taken the place of the Tetragrammaton and they want to preserve its sanctity. They often say "HaShem", which literally translates as "The Name".

The god of Judaism has many names - things we call God - but only one Name. The true name of God is often called the Tetragrammaton in English. I'm not going to type it out in Hebrew - I'll explain why later - but it's anglicized as "YHVH".

Addendum: this sense of holiness around the name of God is also why you'll see Jews hyphenate "G-d" or "L-rd". It's a way to avoid writing out a name for our deity. I personally don't do that because the Tetragrammaton isn't in Hebrew, but it's a matter of personal preference.

The Name of God was only ever pronounced by one person - the High Priest - once a year - on Yom Kippur - and in one place - the Holy of Holies, which once contained the Ark of the Covenant. It is too holy to be used in any other context.

The Tetragrammaton has no known vowels (if it did, we'd be able to pronounce it.) However, in book-form copies of Jewish scriptures, it is very common to put the vowels of the word you are supposed to *say* on the consonants of the Tetragrammaton, which you are *reading*.

@docm77 I find this particularly funny because IMO German is a far superior language to curse in.

Please retweet if you are a Christian or culturally Christian person who actively checks the calendar for conflicts with holidays other than Christmas and Easter when scheduling things.

Christians tell people their deeply held beliefs are wrong *all the time* and run screaming when they get the same back. Because power imbalances are a thing and they’ve been protected by hegemony all their lives.

It is polite not to tell someone that their deeply held beliefs are wrong. But sometimes Christians sometimes have a habit of assuming people in minority religions are stubborn, rather than just a different religion, so direct speech is necessary.

Yes, all Christian “seders” are hateful. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

@itsamini @JehanneIDubrow You get a lead apron regardless, unless you are somehow getting an X-ray in World War I.

Two white Christian progressive men engaged in antisemitism on this site yesterday. Both have been called on it by people of all and no religion. Both have entirely ignored the response. Both of them will face no consequence other than lost followers. And both will do it again.

I just got a *phone call* from a proselytizing Jehovah's Witness. This is extremely not ok. Infographic from @C_Stroop

@AuDHDAndrew Matzah pizza is one of the best parts of pesach! It’s always worked fine for me except for the inherent fragility of matzah

@anonymousprofs Like, I agree completely, but given the number of professors who assume every single student is a liar and a cheat, you have to understand where it’s coming from.

The Christian who called me a c*nt today is having *so* many people say nice things to her to make her feel better about viciously attacking Jews.

@diannaeanderson Is she seriously trying to make a point by looking just at the literal numbers on paychecks?

This is your semi-annual reminder that one of the most important and beautiful services in the Jewish year is built around a prayer about the agonies of forced conversion and how seriously we take oaths. And it’s been used for centuries to call Jews liars.

@millzoomer This part says that if some frothing at the mouth fanatical Christian comes and torches your house and puts a sword at your throat and makes you vow to forswear your God and consecrate yourself to another, that you don't really mean it.

Call me a curmudgeon, but I am firmly a part of the apparently shrinking population who thinks pet dogs don’t belong in grocery stores, and *certainly* don’t belong in shopping carts.

If you have Jewish friends, they have considered if you would hide them.

A few years ago, I helped bring some community members together and a really prominent and successful Jewish woman made a comment that struck me very deeply. She roughly said, ‘for me to truly have trust, I would need to believe that you would hide me’. thread 1/10
