One time I was explaining to @MKBHD that WAV file size is dependent on length and not content (bc of constant bit rate) and he responded “Wait…so an hour of silence is the same size as an hour of dubstep?” And I still think about that every day.

So maybe it’s not the lossless-ness that makes things sound better? Maybe it’s Apple’s superior compression? Let’s ignore the bitrate wars for a second. You can’t fake bass. You just can’t. So lossy compression doesn’t try and remove it. But you gotta lose something! (4/x)

You know what you can lose though? Extreme highs. Most adults can’t hear them anyway, and most speakers aren’t fast enough to recreate them without distortion, so who cares if there’s a little distortion at 18k? Not most people. (5/x)

So why then did he say he heard more bass? Here’s my guess. Our ears do not hear all frequencies equally at all volumes. The louder a sound is, the more our ears perceive the extreme highs and extreme lows. That’s why scooping out some mid frequencies makes (6/x)

After waking up I found another thing that’s sorta misleading. Bit Depth is actually what creates more resolution at lower volumes, not the lossless compression scheme, it just so happens that lossless streams usually have higher bit depth.
