People have been really angry about climate change protestors blocking the M25. Today parts of the M25 are at a standstill because of flooding. Flooding is one of the weather events that will get worse and more frequent because of climate change. Just sayin’

This is what I did at lunchtime today - stood outside the Eurostar arrivals and said “thank you for not flying” to everyone coming through. There were lots of smiles in reply. Positive reinforcement is great and it’s good to be reminded that people are generally nice.

Here’s my new thing: to look after the towpath outside my boat. I move on every 2 weeks so don’t ‘own’ any land, but I reckon taking an interest in my stretch of towpath is a good thing. I’ve cleared all the mud/leaf mulch from this bit so it’s wider/safer for walkers/cyclists.

Back from Nice by train. Not only is flying a nightmare with a bike, it’s also the most carbon-intensive way I could have travelled home. I would always recommend going overland - I haven’t flown for more than 10 years, but it doesn’t stop me travelling ⁦ @FlightFree2020 ⁩

I love my solar panel. It blows my mind that this powers my life. It feels like magic! The sun gives me everything I need and I don’t pay a penny. Why don’t we put panels on roofs as a matter of course? I’ve never understood it. It’s free electricity! ☀️

Loads of cyclists out today on the ViaRhôna - old, young, fast, slow, tourers, commuters. I followed this route south for a few days on my last France tour and would DEFINITELY recommend it. Beautiful, easy cycling, and the Rhone valley is just stunning.

I was never a runner. I was always just a cyclist. I thought running was boring and pointless and difficult - memories of being forced to do cross-country at school and hating it. But then I started running, and it turns out I’m pretty good at it!

Every Monday I cycle my nephew to school. He’s 6 and rides on the road with me behind him. This week he said, “Anna, I love riding my bike with you!” I want him to grow up to be a road user who can ride a bike safely when he chooses to. Not be warred on by a ‘Nation Of Drivers.’

Here’s what I’m packing. Two panniers, one full of clothes, one with my sleeping bag and air mat and some waterproofs that I hopefully won’t need. Tent and roll mat on top, along with the bike bag for packing the bike down for train transit. Day things in the backpack.

On the new Lumo train to Edinburgh. Lon-Edin is the UK’s busiest flight route... so I’m checking out the alternative. @LumoTravel says it wants to compete with cheap air travel so they offer pretty competitive prices. I missed the uber-cheap tix but £57.90 to Edinburgh isn’t bad.

Happy birthday to Eileen Sheridan, who is 99 today. Joining Coventry Cycling Club in 1944, Eileen went on to break just about every distance record there is, including setting the new London-Edinburgh record of 20h 11m 35s. The time was set in 1954 and is yet to be broken.

Two weekends ago I went for a mini cycle adventure in Kent. I’ve found someone daft enough to want to go cycling with me and gracious enough not to moan that the forecast was mostly for rain. The plan was Whitstable to Canterbury to Sandwich to Deal, then Dover the next day.

This is a brand new estate. Where are all the solar panels? Why isn’t it a compulsory part of the build? Retrofitting is so much more expensive... and, in a time of climate emergency, shouldn’t the basics come as standard?

That was a really hard day. Started with porridge at 6am, then we cycled 50km before second breakfast, 50km before lunch, then another 50km to finish. The last 50km was over the Col du Granier.

The conclusion to my adventure was to have a dip in the Med. Originally the plan was Nice but that would have meant 2x 140km days which didn’t really appeal after Ventoux. So I’ve come to Marseille. 1100km from Channel to Med. I think I’ll go for a swim now.

Calais itself was delightful. It must be strange to have your identity tied so much to the ferries coming in and out - most people come here only in order to leave. But the Centre Ville is really quite delightful, and the beach! Oh my god 😍

Every morning I do a workout on the towpath or some grassy spot nearby. I like being outside and there’s not really room in my boat to do it. This morning a dog wouldn’t stop barking at me, which according to the owner was my fault because “normal people don’t lie on the ground”

This time ten years ago I was 26 days into cycling around the coast of Britain. It was one of my best ever days on a bike: making my way out to Cape Wrath across the Parph, then down to Achmelvich on the west coast via the Drumbeg Rd. Miles of hills but mind-blowing views.
