I hope the takeaway here is “listen to your neighbors, even if they don’t owe you comfort, especially in light of pains you will *never* fully understand” more than “resources should be more accessible”
While I appreciate this growing appreciation towards the cultureS of the isles, I still see a lot of misviewing of the PH being a monolith. Truth is there is no -one- Filipino culture, our diversity is reflected in our languages, martial arts, and yes even the old writing systems
Your country could give all of us free visas and reparations at minimum and it still wouldn’t be enough to set right the damage done, entire cultures were wiped off the face of history. We dig through the ashes churches were built over. It’s discourse to you, it’s reality to us
The ‘pinoy’ identity is reductive as hell and continues a lot of erasure and assimilation. Celebrate our diversity instead. I’m Bisaya from VisMin homie, my Pinoy card got revoked at birth and to be ‘Filipino enough’ I’ll have to assimilate to Catholic Manila Tagalog culture lol
A beautiful personal essay on Rizal's work, regional language and heritage was posted in an FB group Im in. It speaks volumes about the crap regional Pilipinhon go through re: most 'National' media.
Yknow what? I can hate on this routine slander on Sinugbuanons all day (Filipinos are interchangable right? /s) but instead, for comparisons I'm gonna show y'all what a local theatre group can pull out. Shout out to Karakoa Productions

Balor I did while our net was down. Really pushed the colors on this one, them digitrade legs, man. Had fun doing the nanite swarm flame as well, it was right up my alley.
Apart from the message of decolonization I really appreciate that they perform in different PH languages . Because yknow, PH language diversity is a thing, actually
@kamreadsandrecs
even in the big cities like, I remember staying late at uni and a guard going hey don't go to the bathroom in x floor at this time, the lights flicker and you might see a headless priest walking around
Your ‘discovery’ was apocalypse to the rest of us. You will never know what it’s like to read history and have to see it through the eyes and biases of the people tho took it from us. To scratch and claw for the morsels that escaped your fires and whips. Hilom dira
I live in a country where the regions are at best only known by the media in the capitol for the commodities we provide and as tourist destinations rather than the neighbors we ought to be treated as so 🤷
The Hunger Games has some of the actual worst worldbuilding in fiction. What do you mean a district the size of one or more US states produces ONE resource and nothing else
We are long past the need for generous portrayals of conquistadores. At the very least we still have our languages. And our neighbors who never knelt, their cultures still persist to this day.
If you run you gain one, if you move forward you gain two 🔥
Sruta Shuyin, the Witch from Soumya. The winner of the Gubat Banwa patreon's May Character AU poll. Expectations were high with this one, and despite the hangups and delays, Im super proud of how this one turned out.

art. The SSC-Monarch is one of my favorite looking frames from LANCER, so I didn't want to stay too far from the design. I think I'm getting the hang of drawing mecha, little by little.
As Buwan ng (mga) wika comes to a close, I hope my friends and neighbors in the north understand that Tagalog isn’t as universal to the ‘Filipino’ experience as some make it out to be. It was something that was force fed to many of us at the expense of our own, remember that.
Remembering watching a lunar eclipse as a kid in Cebu city. My dad's family, devout Catholics as they were, still banged pots and made noise during the eclipse to get the Bakunawa to leave. Thought little of it then but it's amazing to see how these things persisted.
I don’t want to put any artists or studios down, but I really dislike the look of fantasy currently. Everything that has that Overwatch-WoW-DnD 5e aesthetic to it makes me want to hurl myself into the sun. I’m really sorry. 😞
@Lancer_RPG
illustrations from earlier of the year, most of these were done before I switched over to CSP from Photoshop. figuring out how to draw mecha was one of the things that kept me going this year, might redo some. Opening commissions again soon~
Regional Philippines artist train go!
Eyo Im Dyl! I grew up in Cebu Cebu City and have roots in Bato-Samboan and Dadiangas 🔥
Tag 5 artists from the PH regions. Cause yknow, we exist! ⬇️
I'd argue that Manila has a lot of culture, in fact it's so loud and immense that it's easy to think it's all that there is to being "Filipino". Its culture is the 'default' imposed on the rest of us.
Not to mention almost non-existent ang culture here sa Manila unlike capital cities ng neighboring countries natin. The likes of Bangkok, Phnom Penh, Taipei, Tokyo, buhay na buhay ang kultura nila sa capital cities pa lang.
At least some of you now know how we felt about "padayon". Fr though, at least this made people think about and look up Philippine Psych, albeit with the usual 'default Filipino'-centric baggage that comes from being tied with language but eh 'ge nalang 🤷
I hope someday I can see Datu Lapu-lapu depicted in popular far reaching media actually speaking his mother tongue. What a concept no? A Oponganon actually speaking Sugbuanon Binisaya? one can dream.
Maybe there needs to be like, an infographic on the depiction of the many Philippine tattooing practices as a general resource. Especially considering how our patterns are unique, mostly symmetrical and vastly different from our Polynesian and SEA neighbors. 🤔
Coming right up, two SEAsian fantasy knights. One on an ancestor spirit crocodile, and one on a mystical swordfish. Cmon, Skipper, help me show them Gubat Banwa 🐊🐟

My pc, Kadlawnon casting his enlightenment skill at the finale of a Gubat Banwa test campaign last year. Took a while but Im glad I finally got to finish this, cheers~

Remembering what a dear friend of mine once mused about regional Ph storytelling. How we artists with the means have a responsibility to tell our stories and hold them dear, because if we don't, others can and will talk over us, or worse tell our stories as if we don't exist.
I recall someone asked in one of the GB server streams about Orcs in the Sword Isles. I shot that down quick cause for the most part Orcs fulfill the function of a '"primitive" dangerous other' and by that perspective and metric most of the Sword Isles folks would be 'orcs'
I once again ask for creators to stop representing Native and Indigenous people's as some form of Primal Orc creature.
People's of Polynesian, Oceania, Melanesian, Micronesian, Pasifika, and SEA deserve better than having European representing them in TTRPGs as primal Orcs

We’re apparently doing this again so here’s a reminder from your neighbor in the Visayas that the word ‘Filipino’ you hold on to (and all you think it entails) doesn’t have the universality of experience you think it does, or should.
Hey friends! Here's the ensemble illustration and details for Gubat Banwa's landmark 0.6 update! L-R: the Kalabaw Kshatriya, the Mangangayaw, the War Babaylan, the Bantara Bowman and the Ayam Hunter.
I’ll always remember what my friend told me about telling our own local stories and connecting with our heritage . We have to, even if they keep speaking over us, because if we don’t they’ll talk as if we no longer exist.
Hey all, things haven’t gotten better yet on day 4 after typhoon Odette. I’m doing rounds in charging stations to charge up my neighborhoods power banks signal is still pretty crap. If you wanna help us out directly my paypal is dylbriones

Filipinos own the filipino martial arts, period. Be they homelander, diaspora, halfie, quattro etc. People can be guests, people can be warmly welcomed in. But it shouldn't be forgotten who built this house, and it shouldn't be sold off to those who forget that they are guests.
I wish foreign practitioners of Filipino martial arts would at least get the names of certain techniques (mostly visayan words) right when they technique-splain online to folks from here sharing practice vids.
There probably should be like, a primer for depicting PH swords cause everytime I see a flipped kampilan or a kalis displayed without reverence or respect in art I just get more tired and bummed out , send tweet
Here’s the one real confession, I think what is generally assumed to be ‘pinoy’ culture is not as universal to the experiences of the many peoples of the isles as some think it is, sorry not sorry
Reminder that the Disciplines in Gubat Banwa have true names that we had to change for 'accessibility's' sake, we reverted some of them but thus far the more 'challenging' names get snubbed. We keep their 'true' names in our hearts
Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day~

You really can't reckon with beautiful things like Philippine heritage and cultureS (yes, plural) without the acknowledgement of what was inflicted upon us as a people, and the resulting harm that we suffer and perpetuate amongst ourselves to this day, intentionally and otherwise
What if Spain did not colonize the Philippines?
Luzon could be part of China, while Mindanao could be a province of Malaysia or Indonesia.
It was Spain that united the major islands of the Philippines in the 16th century.
So walang Pilipinas kung di tayo nasakop ng Espanya

, bartender and owner of the Bantayan/Overlook bar. Fixed up her ink to evoke the old Labid lines from the precolonial Visayan tattoos. Don't worry she's not saying anything dirty in Sugbuanon Binisaya, just some good-natured ribbing.
in wanting more visibility for filipino martial arts beyond the assumptions it's all Sticks (inserting arnis tournament pics here), yes this is your sign to fall into the philippine blades rabbit hole
The Mambabarang from the Rajahnate of Gatusan! The first of many additional disciplines for future Gubat Banwa supplements. Felt hella great returning to the discipline illustration mindset, like a homecoming even.

just learned that the fighting style that the fremen use for dune 2 is balintawak kali. now yung fremen lineage makes sense na sanay sila sa mahirap na environments kasi pota galing pala silang caloocan
I wanted to draw something for the grandmother I had never met. She passed on waaay before I was born.
So here she is, the brilliant and talented Concepcion Gantuangco Briones, a skilled writer and a dedicated journalist. Happy Birthday Mama 'Ting, Lola Conching. <3

I'm still processing what we were fortunate enough to witness. A day ago, we watched indigenous tattoo revivalist Piper Abas do his work in Museo Sugbo, a colonial jail turned museum. Piper shared and imparted on us perspectives and wisdom that am grateful to receive.1/?
Sharing these cause some here have claimed the People Power Revolution was just a 'Manila thing'. A thought disrespectful to the memory of the Cebuanos who did their part. L-R the Provincial Capitol protests and the rally in Fuente Osmeña. From the Memories of Old Cebu FB group.

I never thought as a Bisaya that I was 'filipino enough' to do 'filipino' work. Growing up in VisMin, being 'Filipino' was something my neighbours were by default, and me and mine had to work to be. Took a lot for me to realize that being Pilipinhon on my own terms was possible.
Question to Filipino artists: Have you ever felt like you should incorporate Filipino Culture in your art because you feel like it's part of your responsibility as a person who's born Filipino?
To peel back the curtain slightly, Gubat Banwa was initially supposed to have 35 disciplines spread out equally across the 5 mahamandala. We cut it to 25 cause we didn’t wanna overwhelm new players to the game 1/?
Depending on how well the funding goes, we might even have a new Gatusan Homeland, Gatusan and Apunon Professions, around 3-5 new Complications, and potentially new Disciplines and Discipline Branches...
Just gotta say its exhausting af taking this much time to painstakingly AD and draw a SOUTH EAST ASIAN ttrpg only for people to fixate on the peripheries of what we're trying to make.
@pilaknabulan
I guess the crappiest part about this is the timing. I recently watched a talk re: pre-colonial Visayan sex practices and the Prof was talking about how they were surprisingly progressive before the Priests wiped all of it away.
LRT "brown skin doesnt mix well with colors" is such an amateur hour take, not to mention blatantly racist as hell and should be called out. Anyways, just wanted to flex. All from

Calling all of these Baybayin would do the same heavy damage as calling the different PH langauges 'dialects' but what do I know I'm just another one of those proud and spite-filled Bisaya on the internets lol
