Are antidepressants addictive? Many people keep on spreading the misinformation that these medications make you an "addict". Even many doctors believe this and suggest their patients not take antidepressants.
Here is what you should know. 1/n
Snake 🐍 bite for recreational purposes?? Yes, you read that right!
Snake bite abuse is in the news again.
I've seen 3 cases in my 11 year career in the Psychiatry/Addiction field!
Here are some facts about it:

So one of my patient was started on the following drugs by a private practitioner:
Escitalopram+clonazepam
Separate clonazepam 1 mg
Mirtazapine 7.5
Desvenlafaxine 50 mg
Amoxapine 100 mg
Chlordiazepoxide
Amitryptiline 25 mg
Antipsychotic drugs must be feeling left out!

Because addiction is also a disease and not a choice! No one ever chooses to be "addicted". With proper guidance and treatment for alcohol use disorders (along with cirrhosis management), they have as good a prognosis as non-alcohol-associated liver disease.

Many doctors (very commonly) use terms such as 'addict', 'alcoholic', or 'drunk' to describe persons with alcohol use disorder!
Here is why one (especially clinicians) should avoid using these terms:

Lizard tail
Scorpion bite
Wasp sting
Some volatile solvents like paint

PS. If you know someone with an addiction, refer them to any nearest psychiatrist/addiction professional.

I still remember that CT 2000 final! As usual, Sachin and Sourav made some good contributions. All others failed. Chris Cairns scored a century and single-handedly won the match for NZ while chasing.
What do we know about it as of now?
1. It is rarely reported substance use in literature. Most cases are from India.
2. Most of these cases are reported among opioid users.
3. Use has been reported in rave parties for some time now.
4. Usual site for bite is tongue/toe
2/n
5. We're not very sure how it works. Maybe the neuro toxins work through nicotinic ACh Rc.
6. Patients report a sense of high, euphoria, dizziness, sleepiness, and relaxation. Even analgesia is reported by opioid users.
7. We are not sure if it causes addiction.

Just read this hard-hitting article by Prof
@atulambekar
on the need for drug decriminalisation in India. Making drug use/consumption a crime doesn't work. On the contrary, it leads to more public health harms!
#DrugDecriminalisation
8. Most of the patients (including the ones seen by me) have reported the use as an additional agent to get high (after using other substances)
9. All my cases reported going to a specific person/snake charmer for the bite who would help get a bite on the tongue.

Bidding adieu to theses, projects and papers.

Farewell academia, you’ll be missed!
10. One of the patients reported the death of a fellow due to a bite by a poisonous 🐍 by mistake.
11. For most of these people, the primary substance is something else and the snake bite is used only occasionally (eg one pt reported 3-4 times use ever)

There is 4-D strategy people can use whenever they are experiencing craving (proven to be effective): 1) Delay 2) Distract 3) De-stress / Deep breath 4) De-catastrophize. Also one more, Drink a glass of water (cold).

Guys, depression is not something you chose.
PS. I don’t support euthanasia for mental illnesses at all.
Punishment doesn't work for addiction. Let us not call it a 'treatment'! We've known for decades now that addiction is a treatable medical condition - a brain disorder, not a character flaw/not a social deviance.
What happened when a mother found out that her 15-yr-old son was becoming a ganja addict? She came up with a unique treatment. Tie him to a pole & rub mirchi powder in his eyes & not untie him until he promises to quit. Incident in Kodad,

What is more problematic here is that there are at least 10k people who agree to this nonsensical opinion! Clearly, everyone is an expert on everything in this new era!
Bipolar disorder, multiple personality disorder, depression etc are all fancy words given by psychiatrists who don’t wish to work on emotional health of the patient and earn money only through drug prescription! Simple! We all have all of the above on a normal basis.

Often people confuse drinking in moderation as "no-risk drinking". There is nothing like "no-risk drinking". It is "low-risk drinking". For some health conditions (some cancers for eg), the risk increases even at a very low amount of alcohol consumption (even less than 1 drink).

Most drugs used for schizophrenia/ bipolar disorders/depression are safe and do not have addictive potential I.e. there is NO RISK of developing an addiction. These drugs improve mood/psychotic symptoms. There is NO CRAVING/LOSS OF CONTROL. The outcome is usually positive. 5/n

Pretty accurate representation of Addiction!
After a certain period, using drugs is all about feeling your normal self without withdrawals, and not about getting high.
Using degrading/stigmatising language further adds to the stigma these individuals face. Stigma, as we all know, can reduce the willingness to seek treatment. Use of stigmatising language may also influence the clinicians' perception about their patient.

Using terms such as 'alcoholic' or 'addict' equates them with their condition! They let you forget that they are also whole human beings!
It equates to "they are a problem" and not "they HAVE a problem"! The change (using person-first language) shows that they HAVE a problem!

This is especially important because
1. SUD are one of the most stigmatising health conditions
2. Mental illnesses in general have low treatment seeking. Among MIs, SUDs have the lowest treatment seeking rates.
3. Stigma is directly associated with low treatment seeking.
