Can't wait to spend time and resources on this. Not necessarily worried I'll actually be on the hook for that amount because it is seemingly impossible but we'll see!
“But experts say it is the United States that stands out. Since 2000, 31 countries, many just as pious as Mexico, have expanded access to abortion. Only three have rolled it back: Nicaragua, Poland and the United States.”
The erosion of abortion rights is extremely rare in the world, and almost exclusively occurs in backsliding democracies. Here’s my reporting on the link between those two forces:
Every single year, America needs to learn about a new county in Arizona they've never heard of before and hear more about it than any county in their own state.
In my expert opinion (and yes stable isotope analysis of fossils is what I did my PhD on) there are not THAT many mass spectrometers in the U.S. that could have accurately run these samples. It shouldn’t be a mystery where these data came from!
Exclusive: Paleontologist Robert DePalma has been accused of faking data in a paper showing the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs struck Earth in the spring.
LSU autism researcher Johnny Matson had 24 papers retracted last month--Elsevier found that these papers weren't externally peer-reviewed and had an undisclosed COI.
My first story
@Spectrum
!
When a tweet goes viral usually it’s rough, but I’ve not received one negative comment directed at me and so many people have offered to help. That’s nice!
@nicolesantacruz
I might have to! Also I feel like I already paid for it because I paid the hospital for delivery and there was a line for anesthesia...Guess I'll wait till I officially get the bill
I gotta say after writing parts of my dissertation on the paleoenvironment of the Cretaceous Gobi Desert it is freakin awesome to see it on Prehistoric Planet
Just heard back. Mysteriously, there seems to have been some mistake according to the insurance company! Who would have thought. But I still have more calls to make.
Just thinking about how every time I open my health insurance portal I see "Tips for Lowering Your Cost" on my $2100 bill for giving birth, and two of the tips are "Consider Urgent Care" and "Consider a Virtual Visit"
This is included in the above embedded threads, but it's worth repeating: did you know that air pollution alone kills 100,000 people in the U.S. each year, 5x all murders combined! And it's mostly preventable. You probably didn't because the news doesn't cover it every day.
Professional news ✍️ Yesterday was my last day

In 1663, the partial fossilised skeleton of a woolly rhinoceros was discovered in Germany. This is the “Magdeburg Unicorn”, one of the worst fossil reconstructions in human history.
This is one of the biggest pieces of health misinfo I see repeated in the news. I’ve tried to convince people who watch TV news this isn’t a thing but they seem incredulous because it is repeated so frequently and never challenged.
I watched the new House of Dragons show last night and it just made me nostalgic for the days on Twitter where I could tweet "Dragonglass is obsidian" and talk about rocks and minerals and everyone was excited

@CaseyNewton
This is a great point I was just thinking about--so many cities/agencies communicate up to the minute news and interact with people/journalists on Twitter. Everyone moving to Facebook doesn't seem likely.
So I’ve kept a spreadsheet of every cent I’ve spent on being pregnant, getting ready for baby and then his first 6 weeks. It’s thousands of dollars. And if I complain people will say well then you shouldn’t have had a baby. Hm 🤔
I saw the most amazing life hack on TikTok. How to clean up your iPhone camera roll and not get overwhelmed:
1. In your photos, search today's date e.g. "January 29" and it will bring up all photos ever taken on that date, any year.
2. Clean up.
3. Repeat every day for one year.
My sweet baby is 10 weeks old tomorrow and I’m back to work tomorrow too!
It will be my 2nd year

Not like I do anything remotely taxing like this for work but I was at work, went to an OB appointment then went right to the hospital the day I gave birth. We have no time off before labor in this country when it would be nice to have like, a sliver of relaxing time.
If the person who ran and analyzed the data died in 2017 and you can’t find (?) the raw data files you want for publishing in 2021…you need to redo it.
Thinking about this again at 4:21 am. Every story on formula inevitably devolves into a debate on formula v. breastmilk but there’s no paid leave in the U.S. which can discourage breastfeeding since it takes so much time. It’s impossible out here.
Across the U.S., parents say they are rationing food for their babies as they search for more formula. Some are driving hours, only to find empty shelves. Online, private sellers are gouging prices, marketing cans for double or triple their normal price.
Thanks to
@deevybee
for talking with me, her data analysis of Matson's publications in 2015 played a part in this saga. And
@autismcrisis
was the first to notice the patterns of self-citation and publication all the way back in 2010.
Sorry still thinking about this! In the methods section at the bare minimum you have to say what lab ran your samples. How did this pass review? This is mostly a rhetorical question haha.
Is anyone following this real-time social media food borne illness investigation? I’d love some infectious disease docs to weigh in on what could be happening here…
If anyone adopted their cat as an adult cat, do you look up pictures of kittens to guess what they looked like since you are sad you never saw them that little? Yeah me neither.
This woman Abby posted a TikTok detailing some sort of liver issues potentially caused by this Daily Harvest lentil mix…the comments had other people chiming in with the same issue! One guy said he got his gallbladder removed this week!
In the last week we: filled a POD, shipped our cars, moved out of our apartment, had our first flight with the 8 month old and then..got the keys to our new house! East Coast Family Era unlocked. Wooo.
I like to keep people updated on my bills from giving birth. So baby is 7 months old and I just got a random letter from a debt collector that I owe a pediatric group whose name I don't recognize $169.93. Never got a bill and my hospital balance reads $0. Neat.
Ok this is solved apparently. Even though it shows I owe $22,700 I actually owe $158 because it was billed in-network even though it clearly says billed out-of-network. Make sense??? Of course not.
Thanks so much for the well wishes everyone! Things are great so far. Little man saw his first Tar Heel Sweet 16 victory and my dad's employees even threw him a Brazilian barbecue for becoming a grandpa🥺
Dinosaur tracks dating from around 113 million years ago were revealed at Dinosaur Valley State Park in Texas due to severe drought conditions that have dried up a river, the park said Monday in a statement
This story is important. It reinforces that suicidal depression can accompany pregnancy. A report out *this week* by the CDC says 4 in 5 pregnancy-related deaths are preventable. 23% of pregnancy-related deaths are due to mental health conditions.
What's next? First we pack up and move to the East Coast. Then next month, I start as enterprise reporter
@Spectrum
! I'm looking forward to learning more about autism research as I start this next adventure.
Twelve journalists have been selected for the AHCJ-CDC Health Journalism Fellowship, the first time since 2019 the two organizations have been able to offer the training in person at the CDC Chamblee Campus in Atlanta.
Breaking News: The FDA proposed a limit on lead in baby food to try to reduce health risks for children under 2. Studies revealed that many processed products contained levels known to pose a risk of neurological and developmental harm in young children.
Some of the responses in this thread are absolutely wild. People really can't comprehend how out of reach daycare is for families. Lots of advice in here is just totally out of touch.
These comments are designed to shame parents and it just makes me sick because people get very little support even if they want to breastfeed. No paid leave. Lactation consultants not covered by insurance (mine’s not)…nowhere to pump at work, and now no formula?

I spent the last few months diving into the world of survey fraud in research--people are even going as far to do fake Zoom interviews! I think people will be surprised by this one...
Recently, some researchers have been overwhelmed with scammers infiltrating their online surveys designed to collect data on specific topics. The problem? Stopping these fraudsters isn’t necessarily easy.

BREAKING: I tracked down Stan, the T. rex that vanished after it was sold for $31.8 million in a record 2020 auction. It's going to be in a huge natural history museum being built in Abu Dhabi, the UAE's capital.
This story was a wild ride. THREAD
Devastating to hear that the
